Thing is, even if he doesn't score more than maybe 10 or so goals he will be the cause of far more. Either by bludgeoning defenders out of the way, keeping them occupied and being a general nuisance at set plays or more directly by nodding down a few headers and holding up the ball and laying it off. He had a crucial part to play in both goals against QPR and the one up at Derby, but because he didn't score them himself a few morons have written him off already.

Interesting. Could you name the 'morons' please as I can't, despite reading all the comments on this SM dedicated thread, name a 'few morons' who has 'written him off'. I can however name quite a few accusing these mythical others of having done so!
No I can't, because I have absolutely no idea what their names are. They are in the North Lower stand, I can say that much. I am NOT referring to any posters on here, even the most sceptical Lifers seem to acknowledge he has his uses even if goal scoring is not amongst them. But I have heard people at the Valley deriding him as 'crap' and 'useless' after only one game and that in a team still finding it's feet.
  • I think it's a Man love thing...

He's not Yann, and therefore can do nothing right...

Utterly brilliant performance today. Take a bow son!

Especially after a few poor touches early on and some groans from the crowd. Brilliant performance.

People need to be a bit more patient with Makienok, things aren't coming off for him so far but he's trying and that's what matters, he'll only get worse if we start booing and groaning

HT on the match thread, best way to turn a crowd is to come out and be the best player you can be, and by God did he!

Excellent second half performance against Hull. A real nuisance to the Hull backline, did sterling defensive duty, linked up well, strong and scored terrific header. Well played.

Had to laugh when the fellas behind me were slagging him off for not sprinting into the box seconds before he opened the scoring.

He timed his run to perfection. He's a pro footballer, he knows what he's doing. Even if he does sometimes look awkward.

The guy was calling for Church back ffs: "At least he'd run around a bit"...

And set up the second for JG! What a man! It's his assists that makes him vital to the team...

Hopefully, this will give him the confidence he needs as a striker, and the fans will get behind him

Poor first half but different gravy in the second, well done big man. He's definitely going to be a Marmite player that's for sure.
  • Loved it when he sprinted back to win the ball with the sliding tackle in the second half.

really hope he gets off the mark asap, like the bloke a lot and says all the right things.

might get some of the people bashing him already (after 3 games!!!) off his back.

he's shown more than enough quality for me to warrant his place in the side (even without the goals)

Well done big man, superb today

You could tell by the goal celebration and at the end of the game it looked liked such a relief and meant a lot to him, hopefully it gives him a real kick start

Big Mak was class for me. Few disappointing touches in the 1st half, but you watch him go now
  • Have to hold my hands up here. Midway through the first half I said to a mate I thought he looked like a clown. His touches were poor and things weren't quite coming off and combined with his awkward/cumbersome style, it didn't seem too outrageous a comment at the time.

Second half it was like watching a different player. Excellent header across the goalkeeper for the first and invaluable assist in the last minute. We wouldn't have won the match without him today.

Really hope he kicks on again next week because I'd love to see him do well down here. Met him in pre-season and he's a really nice bloke.

Wasnt sure by his goal celebration today and looked like he was in tears, felt it was one of three things:

    (1) Pure relief that he'd finally scored for Charlton, especially after the Forest game.
    (2) He's recently lost someone
    (3) Hes a muslim and was praying and thanking god etc...

He was immense today, especially after the goal. To score and set up the winner must give him a massive confidence boost, I look forward to him really putting himself about now for the rest of the season!

    Simon score
    Simon score
Now you've scored one, you'll score more
    We'll sing you assembly
    When we get to Wembley
    So score, Simon, score
  • It is plain to see SM is a class player and I think is "made" for the Championship. AND I am so glad his playing for US!!
What a nightmare he must be for opposing teams, not only offensive but the work he does defensively is immense and should definitely be recognized. I cant believe some of the "moans & groans" from some people though.
With the service, I really think he can score a good return for us, definitely double figures! With that performance today I hope ALL the fans will get behind him and not give him any of this nonsense, it really doesn't do any good anyway.
    WELL DONE BIG MAN!!!!!!!!!!
