I don't understand this owner. A reported fortune and in his 70's wouldn't you want to roll the dice and throw some money at the team to get in the prem ? He could then sell for a huge profit. Instead he is playing his own game of thrones and deposing managers at will and shuffling journeymen players around. What is his ultimate goal apart from pissing of every fan in his network?
Really thought we'd at least see him in our first team for another 6 months if not a season. He proved he was ready for Championship football and had enough games at centre back to show he should be first choice next season. He's no doubt had plenty of chances to leave but he stayed as he would get first team football. Makes you wonder if Liverpool are intending to give him games next season. If they don't he's shown enough to get a loan to a Championship side. Had he left at 14/15/16 he could be stuck playing u21 football or gone on loan lower down the leagues.
Some are blaming RD but whether we've got £3.5m or £7m up front we've got far more than we have for an academy player since Parker. The current owners did enough to get him to sign a pro deal when he turned 17 and a longer deal early on last season. Previous owners couldn't convince Poyet to do the same, and before that didn't see the potential in Jenkinson to give him more than a 1 year contract. Other owners also failed to keep Kasey Palmer and Ryan Huddart (goalkeeper we lost to Arsenal) at the club.
I don't think it proves we'll be selling every half decent youngster, he's a level or two above most youngsters we bring through and he knows it. Without being in the Prem he was always going to be very difficult to hold onto. Even if we do get back there a player like him might stay a couple more seasons before moving on to one of the top clubs. Players like him don't come through very often and part of the reason he originally came here rather than choosing say Arsenal or Chelsea is because we offered a route to the first team. At the same time if those clubs come in for a player later on we're not going to stop them taking up that sort of opportunity.
He broke through at a very young age including playing at centre back, it wasn't long ago many thought he was too young to play first team football, especially in that position. Physically has it all, height, pace, strength and fitness that's before even mentioning he's a good defender and comfortable on the ball.
The ambition for me isn't so much about holding onto a talent like him, every club outside the Prem would find that difficult. It's how the money is used and how well we improve the squad. We need to get it right and look to challenge for promotion. We won't find a Gomez every year to cover losses and/or gives us that boost to our transfer budget. Good luck to him, hope he goes on to be as good as we think he can including becoming an England regular.
Who says the undisclosed fee is anything to do with Charlton, suspect that is driven by Liverpool. But hey, they'll be a front page made of it
Must just be a coincidence that every single signing under RD with a fee has been undisclosed, presumably at the insistence in every case of the other club - even when that's owned by RD too.
I know you are desperate to defend anything and everything that the club does under this regime, but the policy has consequences positive and negative. Blaming the "lazy" media and the fans for negative consequences is just silly.

Beyond parody
Airman is spot on. Katrien said CAFC like the fee to be undisclosed. she said this at the Bromley Meeting. I find this just adds to the wild speculation. So what is beyond parody Rothko ?
As long as a few decent signings start arriving in the next 10 days, all comments about how much we got for Gomez will be put on the back burner. Whether RD spends £3m, £5m or £10m (some hope), it will be because RD wants to and not because we squeezed another million out of Liverpool, sometime in the future, as add-ons will be some time in the future!
Good luck Joe. Glad our Valley Gold money has once again bought through a good youngster like Shelvey and Jenkinson. Anyone know the total amount of first team games played by these three youth products?
Incredible talent, and I've never seen a 17 year old who looked so at ease at Championship level.
Definitely has all the ingredients to be a top player, as long as he is nurtured properly and PLAYS.
Part of me wishes he would have gone to a club like Southampton or Stoke to build himself up further.
Not going to get my knickers in a twist about how much the fee is anyway considering we've no idea how/if it will be spent. We will just have to wait and see won't we!

On the undisclosed fee it's not really something RD/Katrien brought in, it was the same under Slater/Jimenez.
...Hes now on the media saying what a dream come true this is. (wheres me sick bag)....
Don't be too nauseous Chippy, it's perfectly natural for him to say nice things about his new club. For one he chose to go there and for two, just what would you expect him to say? "I'm really disappointed to be going to Liverpool. The Premiership is so dull I'd rather have stayed with Charlton to enjoy the cut and thrust of mid table Championship football. And it's up north. Christ, what have I done?"
Ya know it seems that when another team signs or has to sell a player, their fans all congratulate the player that is leaving and thank him for the time he put in for the club. Now this morning when I woke up and saw the tweet from the club about Gomez, how many positive comments did I see? Well not too many, most responses were our supporters being negative, moaning about the 3.5 fee that likely isn't even true and how pissed off they are that the actual fee was undisclosed. I feel bad for Joe, he said wonderful things about his time at Charlton and credits our academy and start for making him the player he is. He was mature in his words and grateful for his time here and all a majority of our fans can think about is the transfer fee and different things to get pissed at Roland for.... Shameful from some of our lot

Maybe Murray will come out and tell us how we've formed a special 'link up' with Liverpool as part of the deal. "No, no" he'll say "really, this time it is a real link-up. Not like the last two times."
3.5 million is a ridiculously poor amount of money for a talent like Gomez. What an absolute bargain of the century for Liverpool. Seriously, though: what is the point of having a youth academy if you get a once-in-a-generation player and end up selling him for a few million?

Most fees these days are undisclosed. You can understand why from the viewpoint of both selling and buying Club but the lack of transparency infuriates fans because they either believe they have paid too much or sold themselves short but that's how it is unfortunately.
Fucking hell, can people stop wanking on about £3.5m, the truth is more, from multiple sources close to the club. Lazy people believing lazy reporting from Sky
This is where the "undisclosed fee" nonsense gets you in the end. Briefing reporters off the record while at the same time telling fans it's none of their business.
I can see that RD would probably look quite ridiculous if some of the other deals were in the public domain, but he can't have it both ways. No point blaming the media.
Comments
Thanks for your comments, I just know you will go on to bigger and better things and as an Englishman, I can't wait.

Being a bit pedantic but Lawrie Wilson, Danny Green and Danny Haynes were all youth products with us as well.
MK Dons being offered (as reported) £100,000 by the Sheffield clubs for Danny Green
Helps balance the books , what's not to like
Good times

What a load of shit.
Would love to be proved wrong
Hahaha brilliant.
