  • They were both playing in midfield in some of the youth cup games.
  • Just on Morgan Fox, I have seen him countless times playing for the U21's these last two years. Imo he is a modern fullback. He is excellent going forward and has a great left foot on him. He is very good in the air, very vocal and also good with attacking free kicks. He could be our replacement for JJ and Yann here based on what I have seen (a bit like the much maligned Llera here).

My reservations are, that he is slow on the turn and I have seen him "done" by tricky wingers at U21 level which is a concern as he steps up a level. However, he appears to listen and learn, which is why the academy coaches like him and hence why he currently has a contract offer in front of him. On balance I hope he signs it.

He has also played central defence this season, which may be his eventual position given his lack of pace. Long term he is not as good a full back as Tareiq Holmes-Dennis.

Are we in the unlikely position of having a potential embarrassment of riches at left back? Wiggins still one of the best around IMO, young Fox doing well, Holmes-Dennis not far behind Fox, and isn't Archie Edwards a left back too?

Have we got any good youngsters coming through at right back? We might need one before long the way Chris Solly's career is being hampered by the knee injury.
  • Imagine how we would have been feeling had we lost - which looked very likely. It is amazing how important those 3 points were. It is entirely possible that they will be enough - not that we can bank on that given the surprise results at the bottom which occur regularly. Had we lost and been in the bottom three- we would have been likely to go. Same with Millwall - if they found a winner yesterday against 10 men - I would have said they were almost certainly safe! Now they are right in it!

What you need to look at, as much as the points, when most teams only have 2 games left - is how many teams are below you. If you discount Yeovil and Barnsley - we have Blackpool, Brum, Millwall and Donny below us. We have to discount Blackpool as they have to play us - but it is entirely possible that one of those teams slips up. Not definite, but possible - and that is how massive yesterday's win was.
  • An incredible match and an incredible day with 200-odd other Charlton supporters who were there to get behind the team for 90 minutes and kept the faith and kept singing even when we were behind.

I hope those who laughed when I said we were still odds on to stay up after Barnsley and those who criticised the players and the team selection even before a ball was kicked yesterday are enjoying their slice!

Obviously Wiggins is contracted until 2017 and is still a very good full back, who has just had a slightly off season compared to previous ones. Typical that although Fox has looked good since he came in, we already have Wiggins. It would be great to see a forward come through the ranks. In all my 30 years supporting the team, that's the one area we've never had that I've seen.

I don't count Defoe because he left at 15.
30 years. Yes I suppose you just missed Paul Walsh.

That thought makes me feel old :-(

EDIT: Leaburn wasn't all bad by any means and, but for injury, Gordon Watson may well have made more of a name for himself but broadly speaking you are right.
Yes sorry Len, just missed Paul Walsh. I started going from the 88/89 season onwards (I was 6 years old then). My dad reliably informs me he was class and one of the best youngsters ever to play for Charlton, albeit briefly. I remember Leaburn very well. At the time of me supporting them and him playing regularly (90-98) I was between 8-16. I must admit I thought he was poor, but now understand having followed football longer and listened to people like Paul Mortimer, how much of a job he did for the team. In fact, watching someone like Simon Church, you really do realise he wasn't actually that bad, and I suppose his height made him a target for abuse sometimes.

Gordon Watson as well was well touted, but I understand injury scuppered his chances at playing at a higher level.

For me it would be great to get a youngster up front coming through the ranks. I appreciate these are the gold dust of footballers, but then players like Jordan Rhodes etc have burst onto the scene and made a lasting impact. Although I feel it is too early to judge Piggott, I do not think he will be here in 2/3 years time.
  • Amazing game, I was gutted after 10 minutes and they deserved to be two up, we were really shocking defensively. Delighted for Marvin, just a shame he can't play up against Llera every week. We came away with some decent new songs to sing at home, the cousins one in particular. COYR!
  • Good stuff. First time I've seen them. Have to say what the bloody hell was Morrison doing for the 1st, literally just watching the ball. Maybe Solly should have been tighter on the 2nd, considering the guy had time to slip and get up, but I understand Solly has been out for a while so he may be a little off the pace.....

As for our goals, great assist by Harriott for the 1st, and Sordell took the 2nd and 3rd very well. Definitely wouldn't have wanted Church running onto any of those chances

What were the new songs? :-)
  • On the subject of songs, have a youtube of the Chelsea song for Ivanovic. Funny little song and would work perfectly with Ajdarevic...

Not like us to copy songs from other clubs.
  • Back from the honeymoon now, but this result has continued it another day longer. It is results like this which make me sure that I love my football club so much at times.
  • Back on the academy set up, there does not appear to be any top right backs coming through. Obviously 18 months ago, that was different as we had Cousins, who has since been successfully converted to a central midfield player.

Have seen Harry Osborne play there several times. Nowhere near good enough imo and I wonder why we continue to persevere with him. We played Kadell Daniel there last week and Bobson whatsisname also. Bobson looked promising but only saw him for a half so difficult to tell. Will consider this more closely at the U21 match v Swindon tomorrow.

Perhaps as a way of starting out we could play Joe Gomez as right back, he certainly has the pace, stamina and passing ability for the role. I recall someone saying in time he could also play in centre midfield. Either way from what I have seen, this is the best player we have ever produced for his age. Let's hope his progression over the coming years is with us. Cannot stress too much, how good this lad is and those that know me, will know I am a glass half empty man (see yesterday's matchday thread at 3.10pm!). Top, top, top prospect.
  • Have you seen much of Pyke? He said on Twitter he's getting a pro contract.

No. I hope to go to my first U18 game Saturday morning v Crewe. Any idea what time kick off is Scoham?
  • I know he played well and he got a hattrick and everything, but look at Sordell trying to pick the ball up after he scores his first. First he misses it when he bends over and then he kicks it away from his hands. I know this is a weird thing to focus on but Jesus Christ Marvin.
Ben Hamer had been giving him time wasting lessons...

  • He has been taking lessons from Thuram.

My son was just watching the 100 greatest saves from 2012/13 on u tube. Called me down to see Thuram make a great save.

Not that I am suggesting for one minute that heshould stay here!

Going to need to see that! Not with his hands surely?

No idea, I guess it'll be mentioned on the OS later this week though.
  • Yes, with one hand. Pushed away.

starting CHs like Gomes rb or lb has been tried successfully in past. Didn't Rufus start as RB? Also Brownie, Basey. Sure Jenks will be a CH soon. Less risk bedding in a youngster out wide.

Finish 2 is absolutely class. Morro gets slaughtered for their 2 goals btw.

The whole day was a great experience. Fantastic pub (Kelham Island Tavern), thank you OP for the choice. Farmers ale, £2.20 a pint. Good chat with reasoned, sensible Sheffield folk about both teams. We were the most pessimistic, hoping for a point. They thought we had a chance, end of season safe and all that. In the ground, meeting up with Northern mates, a little concerned about Wilson not playing, and Harriott in the team, but happy with Sordell in the starting line up, as he had shown signs of improved performances over the last few matches.

After 8 mins utter despair, but thankfully the quick response to make it 2-1. A few shaky moments after, but then a growing feeling that we were now in this game, which proved correct when we equalised before half-time.

Second half was a bit of a nail biter, but after that fantastic through ball by their centre forward for Sordell to score his hattrick it was actually quite comfortable.

On the tram back to the station, some good natured chat between Wednesday and Charlton fans.

This leads me onto my last point, the people in Sheffield were delightful, good, friendly chat and it worries me the vitriol and bile I see on this site and others when we are all part of the same football community. Some people need to calm down in slagging off opposing fans, they are just like you and me. (even OP!)

I totally agree with this. I walked back to my car through Hillsborough and the Sheff Wed fans were fine. They were a bit down but realistic that they'd run out of steam after a good run which has seen them survive for another season. Sheff Wed IS a big club...you just have to look at the ground...but like Charlton, they've had a fairly rough time in recent years and are struggling for real money. In living memory, they've had some fantastic players...the likes of Waddle, Carbone, Hirst and Di Canio....so it's pretty hard now for them to watch their team of journey-men/youngsters. But the fans still keep going in their numbers...home and away....and they believe that that they can one day get back to the top division, where they would not look out of place in terms of ground and support.
I'll third this. We were in The New Barrack Tavern both before and after & their fans were absolutely top notch.
  • When was the last time we came from TWO goals behind to seal a win?

A couple of years or so ago we were 2-0 down to the Massives at home, and came back to win 3-2. I remember because that well because I had a mate from Wednesday with me. So fantastic to do it to them again!
