  • I am forming no like/love/hatred for this man, UNTIL, and it's looking unlikely from what I have been hearing, he sticks pen to paper to be our future head coach. For now I will support the team 100%, and will applaud Riga if he keeps us up, but no real emotion for me towards him, comes across a good coach but let's see what hand RD plays if we stay up/go down, he will have a plan ready
  • I will never ever agree with the decision to sack CP however well Riga does but as others have said its not Rigas fault Powell got sacked and as long Riga gives it his all then 100% support from me!

He has had a good start which I think was massively needed otherwise fans would be on his back straight away!

Pretty much this for me. Glad that Dyer has been retained to minimise the disruption. So far, other than some of his non-enforced subs, which have been a bit too gung ho for me at times (Burnley), I think he's made a solid start and we have a good chance of staying up whilst playing pretty good football on the whole.
Have to say that I was one who felt we needed a fresh and more progressive approach on the field of play. My 100% support is to CAFC - it's an easy position to maintain.

Loyalty is to be admired but there comes a time when the greater good is served by change in key employees if it enables the business to progress. I fully support Jose who appears to be a man of more than a single quality and the players appear to have responded positively to his guidance.

Ridiculous to label people loudmouth numbskulls because they didn't like CP as a manager and comment the football unless you have seen it? Tell me what the weather is like where you are and I will moan about it!

When we won it was because he was a great manager. When we lost it was a poor team / financial constraints and nothing to do with CP!

Well news flash - this is a mainly terrible collection of players and a poor team and that is not much of a legacy to saddle CP with! He stabilised us and got us up - that is his legacy.

Any manager would struggle with this lot at the moment and, so far, JR is doing pretty well given the circumstances, who he is following and how he was appointed. He is clearly getting to know the team and it is too early to say how it pans out longer term.

All I know is that our team has a much better chance of staying up than two months ago and some of the new players and the new manager are having some sort of positive effect.

Save your sour grapes expression of support.

Aren't you Incorruptible Addick Nigel? Have to say I really enjoy your music writings. If you are I recall you were by some distance THE No. 1 Powell supporter back in the day and Parkys biggest critic. Why the full turn around??

  • in powell i trust :)

Thinking about this - in my position as an ex-pat who never sees us play, I liked Powell because i was in the UK for pretty much all his CAFC playing career. Loved him as a player, was delighted he was appointed as a manager and from the outside looking in - he did a remarkable job for us. What I can't comment on was his brand of football - maybe if I had a ST I would have been against him by the end - although I think I would still have been able to recognise the financial & political shackles he was bound by

The only thing that makes it hard to line up with Riga, is there are those on here (maybe 1 or 2) but especially elsewhere who are using his appointment and decent start to vindicate their bitter/warped views.

So by supporting Riga do I have to fall in line with these numbskulls. I detest some of the loudmouths who bayed for Powell's head, I have nothing in common with them - except we support the same team.

So I am happy Riga is doing well, vindication for Powell in every sense in my opinion as it's by and large Powell's team on and off the pitch that is pulling through for us.

I support Riga but specifically without lining up with the bitter Powell Out brigade whose views, exactly like a stopped clock telling the time right twice a day, superficially look to be proving right at the moment.

Maybe the name is a bit strong, but I am firmly in the camp that Chrissy would have kept us up and I like Riga too. I think it is valid to hold both views and those who seek to simplify the situation as a Powell v Riga debate are deserving of having any peceived alignments clarified and curtailed.
  • How many players were following up the attack when we scored at Forest?
As much as I love CP, I doubt that would have happened under his tenure.
So far more than happy with the job Jose is doing. 100%
  • Spot on Abs.
  • The big thing is we need to stick with the team , even if we do have a couple of iffy results, time for us to sit down and be counted.
  • I like Riga, he is calm and collected on the side line does a lot of coaching, does not go mad when we score a goal but makes sure the team has its instructions and at the end of the game he thanks the crowd and lets the players celebrate with the crowd. Was a bit baffled by some of the stuff he did v Burnley and I would have criticized Powell for the same. Hopefully when Director of Football he will be able to influence his successor.

  • Mendonca, totally agree. CAFC need 100% support now. They'll be no booing, slagging off individual players when they're on the pitch, shouting at Riga etc. from me. As long as I see some effort on the pitch I'm going to stay positive even if we lose every game.

Can't see the point of mentioning Kerm now every time he scores for Bournemouth or Chris Powell every time we lose. Don't blame Roly for wanting to try something different in terms of coaching, we were definately going down with Powell. Riga has given us a chance even if it's no more than 50% without loan reinforcements.

  • Good post Fanny, although why you should apologize for the stick you gave Sordell, I don't know. You should have heard the normally diplomatic BBC commentary team.

This thread was opened for us to describe our support for Jose Riga. As usual some of you have turned it into yet another CP v JR argument. Do me a favour, whats done is done, lets all move on please. CP's picture is still on show in my Lounge, he will always be a Charlton legend.

Have a heart Granpa. I'm still mourning Bob Stokoes departure.

As for Riga, I like the cut of his jib.

  • I haven't rushed to post on this thread , although I'm sure no-one has noticed....

It's taken me a while to get my head around the gaffer's departure & the ultimatum he apparently received from RD - "Like it or lump it"

I still look across the pitch to the dugouts & search for that wide smile with the sun glinting off those white teeth ( can hear the retching from the "other side" already ! ) :-)

But although I may move on more slowly than other Lifers these days, move on I must. And thus far, it hasn't been as painful as I thought.

Jose hasn't done a lot wrong in my book, the players appear to have bonded with him & I have no doubt that he has their respect. And although we haven't morphed overnight into Real Madrid ( give it time!) the results since his arrival have been positive on the whole.

Maybe my vote from the Addicks' jury is still in in doubt as far as RD is concerned, but I have no quarrel with his new man on the touchline . I have always stated that ANY Charlton manager has my full support & I was happy to give Pards & Dowie the benefit of the doubt for some time.....so maybe I haven't always got it right.

What I did see with my old rheumy eyes on Tuesday evening was a team with more cohesion than in recent matches & more movement off the ball than of late which was good to note. The next 2 games will show whether this was due to the limited opposition or whether the tide is now turning for us with a new hand on the rudder.

Whatever our views, it's a no brainer that we have to give the lads AND their new coach every ounce of support we can muster until the final whistle blows in Blackpool & I apologise now for the stick I gave Reza & Marvin at times at Forest. I am currently girding my substantial loins in readiness for " Mission iPro Stadium" & duly swear that I intend to give my all before we hit the M1 homeward bound. I know those wearing the red shirts will too.

In Jose and his brave boys we trust !

( But you'll always be my Number One, Chrissy !)

I think your sentiments are shared by the vast majority of Charlton supporters Fanny. Excellent post.

Grandpa, strangely intolerant post on what is an opinions forum. Suggest that you put the job application for the Samaritans back in the drawer.

As I specifically said 1 or 2 at most on here and they've probably been banned as WUM's in any case as I haven't seen them on here for a while - no problem whatsoever with those who hold views seemingly opposite to mine.

My post was just trying to explain how the Powell/Riga situation is viewed by an ex-pat whose views and opinions on the club are influenced by forums like this - as this is our lifeline to CAFC.

I suspect if I mainly read other forums my view may well have become stridently anti-CP, but this forum is the one I choose as it offers intelligent debate & insight (most of the time) - I think it's fair to say that Powell was by & large fully supported by the members of this forum & that aligned with my view.

Time for me and hopefully others now to step back and take the conflicting personalities out of it and just support the club.

Good luck to Jose - I need CAFC to stay up as live TV coverage of League One fixtures in Canada is surprisingly hard to find!!

  • Valley Mick, thanks for your thoughts. Can I point out that every thread has a title, and a point of discussion. It is my view that some of us seem determined not to accept the changes that have taken place. I would be quite happy to see CP v JR on its own separate thread, but I don't appreciate other threads being spoilt by what I see to be a pointless argument.

So the silly banner got binned then

Seem to recall that when the CP banner was debated that the 100% support was always presented as 100% for the Club?

Now the broken banner has gone is there going to be a replacement? After all I am sure that we all do support the club 100% and not just its Manager?

  • Was fully behind Riga until he failed to do any pull-ups on the crossbar after the Nottingham win.....................

So for all you doubters out there does Jose get your 100% support now?
  • I never would have dreamt we would be safe with a game to spare post Sheff Utd. He really is now a Charlton legend.

    SJR. Who would have thought?
  • Riga out!
  • seth is up to 65% now, maybe 70 if we win on saturday..
  • 100% support now earned.
  • 25%. Went negative and defensive at one nil. That got what it deserved and then he finally attacked. Poyet in their last third and men in the box. Other 75% when he does that every home game.
