  • Can anyone point out what Hamer did today to warrant some of the negative comments of him? I accept his kicking at times was poor .

Think you just answered your own question.

If Ben Hamer's kicking is the only real issue everyone has then they dont really remember Dean Kiely do they? (God he was a shit goalkeeper on that basis then lol!) :)

Think the game has moved on a bit from expecting nothing more than shot-stopping from your keeper. Still the most important aspect of the job, of course, But it's a bit like when cricket had specialist wicket-keepers who batted at number eleven. These days they are expeced to score runs, too. And goalkeepers are equally expected to turn defence into offence with clever distribution rather than aimlessly punting the ball into touch...
  • Just read a comment Pritchard played well (except pritchards gaff for the goal). I must have been at a different game.
Worst game that I've ever seen him have for Charlton. Far too lightweight. Felt sorry for Joe Piggott. Early on took some battering from crafty experienced Millwall defenders. Surely not the best thing to give him his league debut in a tough derby game. Ref no help to him. Church running around like a headless chicken.
Then he is given the best chance of the match to equalise and decides to pass back to their keeper!
Depressing game, surely Sordell should be given his chance, at least has some experience and the Millwall baiting of him
would have loved to have seen him on for longer. We need to play Jordan Cousins and bring back Mark Gower. They can do no worse than today's lot! How we miss Yann, Cort and Chris Solly!
  • 3 CBs need to bring ball into oppo half to give better pass options and angles. No forward in last two decades apart from Yann would have dealt with, tlhose crap hoofs so lay off the Pig. We need a threat. CS, CH or both. Pass away from them then put them in. One away two at home.
  • the point is that Hamer's kicking was previously a strength. He has the skill and the intelligence to use it. It's quite right IMO to call him out today. He was lucky a couple of those kicks didnt cause us more trouble. Like everyone else throughout the club, he can and do better than what we saw today.
  • Don't normally comment, but feel a bit frustrated by that performance. Was obvious from very early on that long balls, crosses weren't working, but they just kept trying! I'm afraid Pigott looked totally out of his depth and his partnership with Church was never going to work. Powell is a thoroughly decent man, but he is paid good money to somehow fail to see what everyone, including TV commentators, were seeing. I do fear for this season now, and Powell's judgement and tactical awareness are looking sadly flawed.
  • Pritchard stealing a living as a footballer. Utter joke.
    Stephens not much better.

First time ive seen Stewart, looked okay.

The way we play we might as well have Allardyce in charge.
  • There seems to be a not very subtle plot to get rid of Red, Red Robin and it pisses me off.

I know the young "flare" lot despise it and it is their right to have that opinion but to remove it and take us for mugs by denying that they are is an insult to those of us who respect the traditions of the Club.

*awaits sarcastic comments but don't give a shit! Let's be having you as Delia said!*

Fully behind you Len. I think we should be told why it's being eased out. I think its essential we keep it.

Agreed, RRR is obviously a part of our tradition. To get rid of it is one more step on becoming a joke plastic club like palace.

  • defo agree with his im a young fan who grew up listening to RRR when players came out its tradition and should be kept no matter what and i also find it strange people on here say we should be playing more of a passing game, like today, there were boos from the crowd and then they say we should play more direct and when we do our players get slated...cant have it both ways
  • Jackson definitely a passenger atm. Slow, poor late tackles being made, not getting into the box, reluctant to use his right foot.
  • As much as I was disappointed by the that shower today I cannot still understand after all these years of going with my father why he thought it was a good idea to follow his footsteps. Before the game we both was resigned to inept charlton. If you have kids don't even think about it it's not fun

As I said above Len, it is part of a worrying arrogance from within the club. Whom did they consult about it? Same arrogance that thinks its OK to let the police inconvenience customers for what is for many one of the most important fixtures in the calendar.

  • Travelling back to Northumberland and wondering why I made the long and expensive journey to be honest. No passion at all, I wish I lacked that passion as it wouldnt of cost me an arm and a leg today!Oh I know why-its to see the team I love I just wish the players did too.

I couldn't believe the lack of purpose, passion and belief on show today. Are the players that lacking in confidence? That performance stank of relegation
Only Churchy, Jacko and, i thought, Wilson looked like they wanted the ball after we went one down, the rest looked scared shitless.
Our admirable but laboured attempts to pass our way forward from the back quickly fell into a pattern of breaking down once we crossed the halfway line and almost inevitably we eventually resorted hoiking it forward to be gobbled up by their defenders.
Agree with those who say Pigott should not have been put to the slaughter for this game, but I guess Sordell hasn't yet shown that he offers anything better (but that was a peachy ball to Churchy today, who had deserved the chance with his endeavour but showed a total lack of belief with that "pass back").
Pritch had a mare and should have been subbed at half time ( he can be excellent sometimes but looked non-league today)
Fairly decent cameos from Harriott and Stewart but, without trying to dismiss their contribution it is sometimes a lot easier to come off the bench and look like you mean business.(Green did it all the time and then was pants when he started a game)
They were lame, but we were lamer - at least they tried to get some shots away. You never know you might get a lucky deflection.
Yann coming back will make a big difference but at the moment I am just hoping Powell can get a response.
There's a long way to go but right now I am just hoping there are 3 teams worse than us at the end of it
  • As much as I was disappointed by the that shower today I cannot still understand after all these years of going with my father why he thought it was a good idea to follow his footsteps. Idle junior (16) went today with a (non-charlton) mate, hoping to show him what Charlton are all about. Sadly, I think the essence of the CAFC experience was encapsulated by the day.
I couldn't face it after last year's dismal treatment by plod and knowing what was likely to come. He'll learn.

  • RRR is obviously crap, faintly risible, undoubtedly outdated and broadly belongs in the age of bobble hats and rattles.

That, of course, is why it has an irresistible attraction for those of us who have attained a certain age.

Buit aren't they also exactly the same reasons why a younger demographic should love it, too, even if only on the basis of post-modern irony?

    Gonna be controversial here.
I am by and large a fogey and traditionalist but, whisper it, I don't miss the Red, red robin.
    It's dated, twee and embarrassing.
    Sorry Len!

Len, I'm one of these younger fans and I love it. Will have it played at my funeral. I have never seen a comment or heard anyone say they despise it

I don't just expect shot stopping. But you wouldn't say a wicket keeper, iin a cricket team was shit because he failed with the bat in a game. Especially if he kept wicket well.

Seeing as a keeper has the ball at his feet for such a short time compared to an outfield player, Im not sure Id focus on that part of their game as a reason for criticism as much as you are.
  • Forget about who the opposition were this afternoon. If we were at home against Barnsley, Yeovil and or even the unlucky Doncaster eleven, would we accept that performance this afternoon. For me, no chance. We have 3 more games before the next international break and if things don't improve we are going to be in a long relegation battle this season.

That today was 2 shit bottom 6 teams on show and once again proves that if 4/5 players don't turn up, then we deserve what we get. nothing. Last week at Watford everyone played to their best and IMO without Yann getting whacked then we would have got 3 points.

Hopefully a target man will come in on loan or a free agent like Rob Hulse, as we cannot go many more games with Yann missing.
  • I am now 58 years old. My dad (himself a lifelong Charlton fan) took me to my first game at the Valley when I was 5 years old and I have supported them ever since. I love Charlton and always will, but today is one of those extremely rare days when I am ashamed of my team and embarrassed to support them. From start to finish and almost to a man, including CP, there was no guts, no fight, no spirit, no teamwork and precious little ability. I can live with being beaten, by anyone, but I find it hard to accept and forgive a team that looked beaten before it had even started. It looked for all the world that they gave it up as a lost cause when Yann was ruled out through injury. What followed was a disgrace. Even a non-league side would have at least put up a bit of a fight. We were just pathetic.

I feel so sorry for Joe Pigott. I have marked him poorly on the ratings thread because he was, frankly, dire, but what a game, and what a dreadful team performance around him, to make his proper home start. Poor, poor bastard.

It was boys against men, all over the pitch. For the very first time, I am starting to doubt CPs motivational skills, and i love the guy.

That's enough for now. I don't even want to think about it any more.

Don't follow the ball for a bit and you'll see that Jacko is far from a passenger. Problem, as has been said, is him and Stephens are only best with an extra man (ie in a 3), as neither are lightening quick. Alternatively, drop one of them and partner with a pacey player in a 2. Is that Cousins???? This is praps why Holland has been ditched. Combined with no Yann today it meant neither 3-5-2 nor 4-4-2 worked in my opinion.
  • I can take a defeat if the team has competed - today, we didn't. I don't understand why a team that trains all week can't perform on a Saturdsy against a local rival - the lack of pace, heart and ability to compete will see us at the bottom all season. Hopefully 3 teams will be worse! Boy do we need investment. I always believe but, after today, I'm very uncertain of our future. Hope I'm wrong.
  • Burnley
    Forest
    Blackpool
    Blackburn
    Wigan

I shudder to think how many points we will have after that.

Actually, that is a shred of comfort. As with Leicester, what's the betting that spineless shower of horse shit that played today will decide to turn up against some of the better sides and grab a win or two. Bloody typical if they do,
  • Vincenzo said:

Bad result. Worse performance. Don't think the players are doing what SCP is asking them to do. Historically too many players bottle it against Millwall. Bailey was the best midfielder out there. Looked momentarily better when the subs came on but they didn't sustain it. Passing, service to forwards was poor. Wouldn't give up on Piggott though he made some terrible errors. 4-3-4 next time I reckon, with Harriot & Stewart. Missed Yann & Solly but no excuses, we were second best.

Can we really play without Hamer?

Oops. Meant 4-3-3 but maybe you are on to something!
