Arsenal, Charlton, Crystal Palace and Millwall fans have all been named in a report sent to the Football Association by Brighton supporters detailing incidents of homophobic abuse aimed at them.

The Seagulls are regularly the subject of taunts with the city of Brighton known for having a large gay community.

The Brighton and Hove Supporters Club (BHASC) and the Gay Football Supporters’ Network (GFSN) have compiled a dossier detailing the abuse, which they submitted to the FA on Tuesday.

It highlights incidents at home and away in Championship clashes with Millwall and Crystal Palace, plus further chants in a league game at Charlton and their FA Cup clash at home to Arsenal in January.

A joint statement from the BHASC and GFSN, on the BBC website, read: “It wouldn’t be described as ‘banter’ if the taunts and chants were about skin colour and something would have been done by now to stop it.

“Brighton & Hove Albion Supporters’ Club has spent over 15 years trying to get the authorities to take this regular abuse of one club’s fans seriously.

“We would like our fans to be able to go to games with kids or their grandparents and not hear much of the stuff we are subjected to - it’s our basic human right.

“Our campaigning with the help of the Football Supporters’ Federation has led to ‘homophobic abuse’ being included in the list of unacceptable behaviour in ground regulations, yet many clubs, their stewards and their fans do not seem to know what constitutes ‘homophobic abuse’.”

  • How ridiculous
  • Great publicity stunt for them, this.
  • Ooooooh I say
  • Ok, I'll step up. I think they've got a point. It (rightly) wouldn't be considered acceptable to sing songs about, say, Birmingham's large asian population, for example.
  • Banter
  • I must say I thought stuff I heard last night for a prolonged period of around 20 minutes - non stop homophobic remarks from the group around me quite sickening, and not remotely funny or banterful. I really don't care if its PC or some other label, it turns my stomach to hear such mindless idiocy from a section of our fans, just as some idiots seem to think its OK to repeatedly and unnecessarily use the C word next to my 9 year old daughter as she was at the time.

These so called supporters think they are so big , especially in front of young kids ( my children have experienced this as well). When alone they act like the weasels they really are. The sooner the club gets rid , the better. As for the homophobic chants , it just highlights how ignorant some people are and hopefully Brighton will pull their CCTV footage and give it to Charlton so they can take action.

  • Good.

It will take time as it did with racist chanting but views will change and homophobic chanting will be as unacceptable to most as racist chanting is now.

"PC", "ridiculous" "banter", "it's just a laugh", "no one gets hurt", "Sticks and stones", "It's football so I can say what I want", "it's atmosphere" "I know a black/gay guy and he doesn't mind" were the same sad old excuses trotted out to defend monkey noises and other racist abuse but carry on using them anyway.

    Yes, very real.

They've got a lot of positive publicity from doing this. It's made the mainstream news.

What else do I need to explain?
  • Charlton fan in "moan about other Charlton fans" shocker

The thing is Beds, you're talking about half of our fanbase. I don't think things will ever change. I hope they will, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
  • So what was the 'homophobic' chanting last night then? I wasn't at the game, but interested to know what chanting there was that has led to the club being reported.
  • How many homosexuals were abused ?

    All of them.
  • What every single one - how many is that ?

    Well someone finds it amusing.

  • discrimination takes many forms and in my opinion racist chanting is totally unacceptable in any form. Are chants such as 'does your boyfriend know your'e hear' or 'we can see you holding hands' really fall into the same category? I wouldn't sing them as I think they are purile and not particularly amusing but are they that offensive?

Not really, I find it odd.

Seriously though, how many homosexuals were abused by this chanting ?
  • They have powerful people in place the gay community

We weren't reported because of last night, but will be if we were in December. It was the usual, plus 'you take it up the arse' which has been a reply to everyone singing that Palace chant recently. Obviously Brighton were not doing a Palace song.
  • Childish singing of "taking it up the arse" last night...actually made me cringe (talk about that BBC report doing more harm than good) and some loud arse kept calling them fruits...nothing serious just really childish in my opinion. Just made me think...."Spot the brain cell" other than that our support was pretty good.
  • Pink Lawyers group are on the case

no such thing as PC its all the Daily Mail making it up----latest Labour bollox
  • There was a period last night where people were singing "you take it up the arse". Lasted about 5-10 minutes. I didn't hear anything else. As it was behind me I've no idea if that was what the stewards were responding to when they were trying to get someone out. I think the Brighton fans have a point, even if people here do think it is just banter, they are saying it's not. If someone tells me I'm doing something they find offensive, I'd need a good reason to carry on. Banter is not a good reason.
