Charlton away is somewhere for the Millwall youngsters to cut thier teeth. The older hands are not interested at all. They see themselves as big fish in the hoolie world and prefer to have West Ham as thier main rival.
Palace. Don't like us at all, but won't admit it. They prefer Brighton as rivals 'cos they can take the liberties with them that they can't and never have been able to with us.
Strange that cos Palace never show up for Brighton either.
As a Charlton fan im happy that we support a club that is likeable, if are club was known for being stuck in the 70's with it's view of "passion" id be personally to embarresed to ever admit i supported that club.
Millwall has other parts to the clubs identity but until the proper fans decide to get rid of that element of there fanbase rather then talking about it as "passion" and seemingly being proud of it, they will continue to be a joke for anybody living in the modern world.
To be honest, I find it hard to hate Palace the way most people do, especially the current regime. Of course I hated the Selhurst experience and Ron Noades, but it was 21 years ago when we last ground shared there, and at the end of the day it was Charlton's decision to leave the Valley. The current owners (unlike the likes of Noades or Jordan) seem quite decent, and of course Lennie is now assistant there.
Of course I desperately want us to beat them, for them to struggle and go down etc but no more than that, most Palace fans I've met are similar to us, yes they have their idiots, but so do we.
I probably dislike Millwall more, for the stain on football's name that that club has caused, though I accept the work they've done to be readmitted to the human race...

Just why is it that so many Millwall always come in the home end? To be fair at the last Valley game it was great seeing them led out particularly the smug duo in the NW quadrant who were giving it loads at 2-0.
Because we sell out your away end and you don't sell out your home end, so tickets available for those who want to go. Just like how some Charlton were in the home end for Millwall. Sort of what you expect for local games.
Thats good to know because I just had a feeling some Millwall fans were really stupid.

Have to agree with this.
Would you a) introduce your young grandkids to the Beautiful Game at The New Den or b) at The Valley ( maybe not the North Upper!) without a worry in the world for their safety and wellbeing ?
A Junior Reds' trip to the old place in the early 90's , in their "family section" was a very unsavoury experience to say the least. Primary age kids using 4 letter words plus a degree of racial abuse to Charlton players & egged on by those who should have been clipping them round the lughole. Guess these are the " grown ups" now inhabiting the home areas with their rugrats....Can't believe too much has changed, sadly.
Only just got around to reading this thread since last time...
All I can suggest for those asking about the pioneering bit is read the book Lions of the South by James Murray.
Millwall and Arsenal pioneered professional football in the south. I would have thought a club supported by anoraks would know this obscure footballing fact.
Bunny i think what you fail to grasp is that a number of Charlton fans have been the victim of Millwalls `intimidating atmosphere' and have the scars to prove it (me included). The anger is well warrented. Personally i wouldn't piss in a Millwall fan if he was on fire.

My view, Millwall fans say they do not see us as rivals because it is cool to say they don't see Trainspotting/Anorak Charlton as rivals, they like to think they have bigger fish to fry, when in reality, every Millwall fan I know thought they'd won a cup final when they beat us 4-0 and even drawing 4-4 with ten men! I still get grief over it now. Not forgetting the first sell out at The New Den for donkeys years at home to their insignificant rivals.
Looking forward to the Palace game, they have a defender that used to play for my Norwegian team, Jonathan Parr. Used to love him. Then he want to the Stripeys. Dead to me, I tell you. Dead.
Not sure about relegation or playing them in the same division. But I would like Palarse to sell their ground or whatever and have to ground share with us (at an exorbitant rent). What a scenario. (A bit off thread, sorry)!
Not interested in them buggers groundsharing with us. Every other week I would have a dirty palice backside on my seat, no thanks
Anna_kissed ... like it or not ... football is a 'tribal' game and always will be. The love / hate relationship is a key factor in this. Trying to convert people's relationship with football to a liberal lovey-dovey environment will never work ... thankfully.
Most fans will always talk about certain other clubs from a 'hate' perspective ... whether they really mean the true meaning of hate (and some do) is actually irrelevant ... it's all part and parcel of our great game.
Back to the original issue, I have never liked, nor will ever like, Millwall ... but the last thing I want is for that club to disappear. However, with Palace I personally could not care less if the club disintegrated completely.
It's a generation thing and as I'm not local (although lived in Rotherhithe and in the old Kent road) my rival has always been palace because my first real memories of football were the trek to selhurst an we hardly ever played Millwall till the mid 90's
I know it's more towards noades but that club could have put us out of business, never forget
In terms of the off the pitch other stuff I've always found palace quite a nice day out in that you get to London bridge and the pubs are packed with charlton, you get the 2.30 to Norwood junction and basically take the piss, we usually take far far better numbers there and out sing them for 90 mins win lose or draw
Millwall is totally different in that the pubs are shut and a soon as you get to London bridge you are treated like an extra in football factory, walk down the alley, beer in the ground if you're lucky and then an hour outside the ground for our "safety"
It's just not a nice experience and I expect us to sell out at sell out and barely fill the top tier at the toolbox this season
I bet palace say exactly the same and will sell 3500 at our place in a heartbeat and 1500 to the toolbox if they're lucky

Dear me. You lot really struggle to comprehend this rivalry thing. You ARE a local rival. Our games are big local derbys (well, for South London, rest of the country doesn't care). Millwall fans DO care that we beat you and ARE pissed off if we lose to you. We will take the piss if we win and we will be pissed off if we lose.
But still not to the same levels as west ham or Palace. You're our 3rd rivals, you ain't 1st or 2nd.
I'm really struggling to cope Sparrows - we're only third on your radar? i'm absolutely devastated. Your crowds against us compared to your crowds against Palace suggests otherwise. Our away support at your place compared to palaces support at your place and their supporta t our place also suggests otherwise. The more you and palace protest, the less convincing it is and frankly, the more pathetic it is.

i have to agree with Sparrows Lane Lion on this topic,my Millwall mates i work with says we dont give it large compared to WHU and Palarse, and when we lost at the den our end emptied far to early and i had to go through lots of crap at work for that.Did anyone notice the hut selling millwall shirts by the bridge near there cafe cos there was T shirts for sale with we hate palarse and we hate the hammers but nothing about us Charlton boys.
Comments
Palace are nothing.

Have you got your ticket BTW boss?
Course, the big man grabbed it the other day, text with plans for before match?

Never have and never will be No.1 in South London.

As for the Wembley thing - it was in Rothmans.
Why such anger?

This thread, for example.
You're back Bunny! Nice pins.
Millwall's alright though, just want to beat them.....badly!
