Build A Bonfire

edited March 2012 in General Charlton
I know this is something that's been mentioned on here before, notably by northstandsteve, but something really ought to be done about the half time smokers in the north-upper lavs. It is absolutely disgusting. Yesterday it was just as if someone had built a bonfire in there.

  • I've actually started using different toilets now because of this. I complained to the club last season twice who played lip service to my complaint but have done sod all. it will no doubt take a hefty fine to focus the stadium managers mind on this subject. Yes it's disgusting.
  • Why don't the club open the gates then at Half Time ?
  • Why don't the club open the gates then at Half Time ?
because they dont have to ?

I don't know what the layout of the NU is, but if they opened the gates at HT wouldn't they have to re-check everyones tickets?
  • on one hand as a smoker myself it would be good if they did have a smoking area but as the north stand is completely inside that wont be possible. In the east stand where its outside on the concourse there are people who do smoke if they can avoid the stewards. this of course is breaking the clubs rules. However i do think the area where the old terrace steps are could be used as a smoking area.
I myself am not too bothered about not having a cigarette during the match and can wait till i get outside. to smoke in the loos must be a bit nostalgic, going back to your school days. still its disrepectful to both the clubs rules and to the fans who like yourselfs who have to put up with the fog and smell as you go to have a half time leak.
  • I've just checked and I started a thread on this in October 2008 !!!!!! Not a damn thing has changed or been done about it by the club.

Was thinking just a few stewards standing on the pavement outside as a corden. Wouldn't be any need for them to stand in the toilets then when you're trying to have a piss.

Didn't say they had too. Plenty of other clubs do just to make things easier for smokers/non smokers and themselves!
  • Why don't the club open the gates then at Half Time ?
Why can't these people resist for 90 mins jeez
  • I've got one of those electronic cigarettes, would I be able to use this in the ground?
Did take it with me last time but didn't use it, is it legal to use in the stadium?
  • You can use them ANYWHERE you wish to

  • Yeah creeps, those are fine everywhere I believe.

Well if the club have to hire stewards to man the gates at half time (which they would have to as the stewards already employed are doing their jobs in other parts of the stadium) it would be a pointless waste of money. Especially considering most smokers can hold out for the length of the match.

You can't smoke at The Vally as it is a workplace. I don't see how it should be any different to any other workplace, i.e the cinema, where members of the public refrain from lighting up for hours at a time.

Below is a copy of the email I just sent to Mick Everett and John Little. I'll let you know any response.

    Sirs,

Please can something be done to stop the problem of people smoking in the toilets at The Valley at half time. This is particularly troublesome in the North Upper stand; I do not know if it is an issue elsewhere in the stadium.

There is a group of smokers who seem to get into the toilets quite early at half time and smoke around the area of the cubicles. The smell is quite awful and I imagine that they must add significantly to the congestion in an area of the where there is limited space and at a time when people do not have long to do what is necessary. As well as creating an unpleasant atmosphere, there is also a health and safety issue with people being forced to inhale second hand smoke.

This has been a problem for a long time and has seemingly never been tackled. If any action has been taken in the past, it has sadly been inadequate as the problem continues to persist. This saturday, the smell seemed particularly bad and I do not exaggerate when I say that it smelt like a bonfire when approaching the toilets. I hope that the club takes its duty of care to its patrons seriously and takes the necessary action to halt the problem.

    Thank you,
  • After the first half performance I can't understand why there weren't more people in a queue to have a smoke.

    Very good :-)

I noticed they had a smoking outside Adams Park - basically just a square of crowd control barriers. This is an arrangement I have seen work well at ice hockey matches here in Sweden

The UK has a strange unrealistic attitude to smoking bans. In my experience people will put up with all kinds of inconvenience (like having to stand out in the snow) provided they are given the opportunity, but smoke they (some) will. Just look at the mess outside Charing Cross station because someone has decided that because you're not allowed to smoke no-one will and that it's therefore not necessary to provide "utensils smoking-related refuse for the disposal of"
  • When I previously e mailed the club regarding this I was told that they took smoking in the stadium toilets very seriously. This was probably first done in 2008. I will let you draw your own conclusions as to how seriously they take it.
  • I still think there's a very simple answer, as others have said. A number of away grounds open the gates and keep people in an area cordoned off by metal barriers. It seems so easy, so presumably there's a problem, which I can't think of.
  • Completely agree, this needs sorting.
  • Yesterday was surreal. It was like a night club circa 1980's in the N upper when I popped in. My Son-15- said he felt like he had a fag after going to the loo and said he could taste it. I could not believe the irony as CAFC elected to show quit smoking video at half time. Did the Stewards take a relaxed view given the poor display in the first half?

Yeah, nice one! - how The Valley and other open air arenas cant cater for smokers staggers me. Stewards love telling you (at away games, never enquire at home games) that no way can u have a ciggie - wish I didn't smoke, but I do and get seriously cheesed off that I have to sit in a poxy khazi at h/t

  • [Bournemouth wonders if there's any popcorn knocking about...]
  • I thought the pubs stayed open longer than 7 on Sunday now, obviously not.
  • The only people I see as "sorry" are the grown men who resort to breaking the law and ruining the match day experience for fellow Addicks all because they can't seem to exert some self control.
  • Get you.
Call the police, someone's lit a cigarette in a no-smoking zone.

  • Thanks for the thoughtful debate.

Steady on Robbo that is no way to talk to a lady.
  • Those that indulge in their grubby little disgusting habit will eventually cost the club a fine. Not much I'm sure but a fine of let's say £10,000. That's my season ticket money for the next thirty years. Up in smoke in fact.
  • Well, what do you want me to say?
Lets write an e-mail and tell the establishment how unlawful our supporters are.
For christs sake, come up with a solution rather that a confrontation.

well hopefully they'll never be another Bradford.
  • Seems to me that Robbo needs to have a fag and chill the fcuk out.
