If anyone is really struggling for prices Charlton coaches for £20 can't be complained, apart from the no drinking.
And for the fact they have a tendency to arrive there, if not late, a bit too close for comfort, ie within 30 minutes of kick-off so you are constantly looking at your watch thinking you are going to get there on time

This. Never getting a coach again after I missed the first 23 minutes of the Man City away game in the relegation season. Coach arrived about 30 minutes late at our pick up point and then was made even later by traffic, yet people still insisted on poncing about for about half an hour stopped in a service station on the way even though it was patently clear we were going to miss the game.

Huddersfield away 97/8 coach broke down, got there 1/2 hour before kick off. Southampton away Boxing Day 04ish coach broke down and managed to get a lift when a Charlton fan pulled up and offered to take people. WBA league cup midweek 02ish get there 20 minutes before kick off, Villa midweek three weeks later/earlier, miss the first 10 minutes. Halifax this season leave 10 minutes after departure time, then with two drivers for swap over have a 45 minute stop and get to the ground 25 minutes before the start. I have travelled a maximum 10 times with this lot, all as a last resort. Absolutely clueless

Does this really happen often or are their just a few horror stories of missed games ? I'm giving this serious thought at the moment but would be devestated if I spent ten hours round trip on a coach to miss a third of the game.
i haven't got a coach for years but in the eighties used to always get em everywhere round the country and NEVER missed the start of the game , some close shaves but always in for kick off
but thats no good to people now , sounds like there are more problems now
only problem was we broke down on the away game back from oxford once and steve dixon walked to a chippy and got us all some chips
I used the coach a lot in our Prem years as I was living off a paper round. I used it approximately 30 times and the only time I was late was the 3-0 win at Everton, though a mate had the same for the Carling Cup game there.
Since then I've used it about 10 times including twice this season and it generally gets there an hour before kickoff, which isn't too bad apart from the seemingly obligatory 60 minute service station stop.

Won't ever be getting a coach again after the Operation Eeewood shambles. Our driver (some in-bred West Country yokel) made two 40 minute stops en route and eventually got us there at five to three meaning a sprint down to the ground to see the teams come out so we missed all the pre-match build-up and atmosphere which was the point of going really...

My take is that surely you should be able to get to the ground one hour before kick, you can stretch your legs, have a wonder around and relax. From my experiences that does not usually happen.
Apart from anything else, let the train take the strain, more comfortable and if you see from my previous posts regarding advance purchase tickets, it can be VERY reasonably priced
the coaches have to be better than trains haven't they,if just for the cheapness of them?
a few games postponed and and it's no refund on the trains. didn't a train not make it to sheffield this season and several hundred missed out due to signal failure or something?
what's wrong with organising your own coaches that go when you want, the route you want and stop when you want?

I haven't been to anywhere near the amount of away games as Elfsborg but definitely more by coach and you can only speak as you find. The only bad experience I've had was earlier this year away to Wycombe when we were picked up by the Sussex coach at Bexleyheath which then stopped at Clacketts services for half an hour for the driver to have a break which meant we had to bail out half a mile before the ground to just make the kick off. So all in all I have no axe to grind.
Anyone who has travelled to an away game in a private car would recognise that traffic is unpredictable, so to run a coach servIce you have to build in wide time margins, but comments above that relate to 2005 or earlier are talking about a service run by the supporters club and/or CISA not the club, as it is now. I can't see how arriving at Halifax half an hour before a Sunday lunchtime kick-off is a disaster - but in any case you can't cater for everyone.
Coach travel is a last resort for many people for all sorts of reasons. I would rather not be involved at all in organising away travel but to suggest the current operation is clueless while also stating that you've rarely used it is just silly.
It wasn't the coach passengers who missed the first half or more at Hillsborough.
to be fair i have only ever got the coach when the club have put it on free, forest in the title season got there on time. but i always worry about potential traffic issues and to be honest i just hate the experience of being sat on a coach on the motorway for hour after hour
4 of us going hudds. was going to go by train then realised between the 4 of us we would be paying over £300. so driving up early and travel lodging.
PBS, I know it is not always possible BUT if you know ten weeks before the game you can book advanced purchase tickets VERY cheaply, Huddersfield for me was £24, tomorrow likewise, Preston £28 and Carlisle £32

Each to their own of course, Euston to Lime Street return 2 hours. I live in Bromley and can be there comfortably in 3 1/2 hours once I close the front door, all for £22
Elfsborg you're a legend. Just saved about £50 on the return tickets to Manchester for the Oldham game by using your tip, thank you so much (now I don't have to get the coach!).
If anyone else is still looking, below are the times costs I got (these are on a YP card, so if paying full adult add a couple of quid extra)
Depart Arrive Cost 9.23 Euston 10.45 New Street £7.25 11.31 New Street 12.59 Picadilly £7.90
18.05 Picadilly 19.33 New Street £7.90 20.1 New Street 21.56 Euston £7.25

I take it your point about postponements, next season will be more problematic as more games on SKY. Chesterfield got up there when game called off so went to Bramall Lane so got a game in, not ideal though!!

I would never knock people that go by coach as each to their own.
I do find they take longer, and not that I am an alcoholic I do like a drink before and after the game as well, all part of the day

I do not think it is unreasonable to be there one hour before kick off to unwind, as half the time I have had problems I have either been unlucky or their is a problem. The guy next to me going up to Halifax said that they got in at 3.30 for Carlisle last season. Still never mind, only down the road eh?!
Perhaps clueless was a bit strong, but nevertheless I still think the service is not so good, but for the people that travel regularly with them they are I am sure content so that is all that matters.
Long live the rail network that is all I have to say.
I much prefer getting the train but the coach is a decent, cheap alternative if trains are too expensive or you're going on your own.
It can be a bit mind-numbing and they play some rubbish films, but I just tend to zone out. Having checked other clubs' coaches occasionally, ours is a lot better value than most too. Don't be put off by the odd horror story.

Yes mate. If we meet up at Oldham I'll definately buy you a beer !
what is the best way to get to the ground for Picadilly?
Walk down to Piccadilly Gardens and just before the Wetherspoons on the right hand side, take a right and there is a bus stop, about three different services and takes a maximum of half hour. Allow two hours maximum from when you get off train. Not sure on bus numbers though
