  • Anyone see the Charlton fan have a little altercation with the steward in the second half and then they both went tumbling down the stairs?

One day you might have torn cruciate ligaments in your knee, arthritis, or just simply get old. Let's see then how you get on.

You can't even bring yourself to make the same post.

Is that refering to my original post above yours?

As I said, so it would be best to swap seats so everyone can be
happy. So I think I can class myself considerate.

Already had torn cruciate ligaments in my knee. Ive also dislocated my thumb and chipped my two front teeth when I was younger.

Read my posts throughout this thread and read what I have written.

"You cant even bring yourself to make the same post".....what are you on about?!!! This is a football forum on the internet and unless you are the actual Jimmy Melrose posting at midnite on a Saturday evening....it aint real.  Posting "online" doesnt make it special.

Get out the house more mate.

  • Noone asked me to sit. Noone even made a snydey comment behind me about it. So I stood. Im sure if you say would you mind sitting because i have this problem or that problem 99% of people would.

Unfortunately virtually impossible in a sellout away end especially in a stand with the kind of capacity we were in today.

Not keen on the "sit where you like" policy that some Clubs employ but am beginning to think this is the the best way of enabling fans to sit/stand  at the back (if permitted by the stewards) or to choose a "quieter area" near the front where they will invariably would be able to stay seated . BUT this is always at the discretion of the home Club....

  • Only dawned on me about 20 mins into the game that everyone (I could see) was standing!!

    Pleasant change!
  • Just for the record AFKA stood, well at least I think he was standing. I couldn't be sure though?
  • Sorry Off-it aren't I allowed to put my view, are we all bound by your view on things, is CL only for you and your lot.

I was I agony this afternoon, had to miss seeing some of the match and leave early, after being a Charlton supporter for over 50 years I think I have aright to moan, so go bury your head
"My lot"? I don't think my dad or son are members of Charlton Life so I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.

I feel sorry for you if you were in pain, really I do. It was a good day out, for most, we took 7,000 fans and the atmosphere and support was great. But it seems to me there's always people from within digging our own fans out.

Maybe that's a bit unfair to you, but I don't think most of us had any choice in the matter so I don't really see why you are digging everyone out in your opening post. Nothing personal, but I hope you get my point.
If you really do feel sorry for someone who was in pain why would your reaction be:
    Didn't take long.

FFS, people just LOVE to moan on here.
I would have thought that 'Shut Up, I don't care about you' would have been an honest reply. For you are apparently an inconsiderate, selfish bastard.

I personally prefer to stand but if there are no seats provided for those who are physically incapable of standing then I'm afraid that people have to sit. It is simply a matter of common decency.

This really is an issue that the authorities have to address. If no-one is going to enforce those in seated areas to sit (starting with the front row) then we may aswell rip the seats out. Again, I put this link for those who feel strongly enough to do something about it:
    http://www.fsf.org.uk/campaigns/safestanding.php

Until something IS done people should either:

    a). Sit

b). Have the balls to say here online: 'I refuse to sit because I'm an inconsiderate selfish bastard' and not try to justify it or say 'I'm sorry but', 'You suffered for the team' or some other shit that helps you cover up that nagging guilty feeling.

Just so I'm clear Jimmy Melrose, why am I supposed to be a "inconsiderate selfish bastard" exactly? This is all my fault and it was me standing in front of Lancashire Lad was it?

Get a grip man. Another idiot on here with a selective reading complex.

  • have mentioned this elsewhere, however, what do you do in this situation....

We had an elderly couple behind us (we were in row NN) who nudged us to sit down when the game started. we sat, and tapped those in front of us and asked them to sit down. they promptly ignored us and said that people were standing in front of them. we then leant across and tapped on their shoulders and asked if they could sit down as we had an elderly couple behind us that couldn't stand. they just said that everyone was standing.

I was frustrated that they wouldn't sit, as it meant we couldn't see unless we stood. we shuffled up so they could see through a gap between us which was the best we could do. but if we hadn't known the people we were sitting with (12 of us in a row together) that wouldn't have been possible.

What would you have done? seem like an 'inconsiderate bastard' and stand up anyway or sit and not see the game yourself as those in front of you won't sit down, and even though you can stand up, sacrifice not seeing the game yourself?

Still stalking me and not answering my question I see.
  • I'm sorry but standing at away games is something that is inevitable, and there isn't much you can do about it. It doesn't matter how many people in-front of you that you can get to sit down, somewhere along the line there will be a group of people who will stand no matter who is behind them, and therefore everyone behind them will have to stand. There are limited solutions to this:

    A) Don't go to away matches
    B) Get some kind of initiative going whereby clubs offer one whole block to people who 'have' to sit down
    C) Get tested, get a pass and go in the disabled area
    D) Get on with it and stand up

That's why relying on the common decency of fellow supporters is not the solution to this problem. There will always be the difficult ones who refuse to sit down, this then flows back to people like yourself who want to be helpful. I was in row D three rows from the front, but still had to stand all game, so the people who say "go to the front if you want to sit down" are wrong as well.

So to summarise, 'if you don't like it, f off'.

And people wonder why we don't have a great away following
  • The problem isnt with our fans, its with the sheer amount we had their today. If the vast majority of 7000 people want to stand, then theres nothing anyone can do about it if they still want to see the game. This isnt being harsh and telling those that cant stand as easily just to deal with it, but its just a fact that in such a large away following getting everyone seated, unless there are set sitting and standing sections is never going to happen.
  • Were you drunk Suzi? Or chanting racist abuse?
I saved that for later on in the day!!

RE the standing / sitting section

even if you had a 'sitting' section.... if the 'standing' section sold out. some want-to-stand fans will get tickets in the 'sitting' section and carry on regardless.

I agree that with 7000 there wasn't a lot any one could do - no steward was going to attempt to ask everyone to sit down even though it would be the right thing to do.

fans don't seem to understand that the club's hands are tied with regards to the sitting/standing argument - the old fans forum did bring it up at one of the meetings - although it was mooted quite quickly  (which happened quite often with any ideas!) the club can't really get involved in the away ticket allocation and even if they could - the stadiums are 'seated' and they can't be seen to encourage 'standing' areas as it is not actually permitted if there are seats? I'm sure it is out of their control, and unless they could predict the order that the sitters/standers will purchase tickets and how many of each would be buying tickets surely it would be impossible for them to co-ordinate anything of that scale.
  • Some great posts on here, esp the last couple by Suzi.

the one overiding factor that seems to be missed by many on here, esp by the "I want to stand, so I'm standing " brigade is that the vast majority of football grounds are, in fact, ALL SEATER stadiums and UNLESS they have a terrace/standing area (League 1 and below) then YOU ARE REQUIRED TO SIT. it is not a request that you sit down at football matches, BUT A REQUIREMENT.(I'm not sure if it actual law, - i expect it is but I'm not a lawyer)

Compare it to the cinema, theatre, opera etc - all these entertainment venuea have seats which the patrons are expected to sit to watch the performances. Imagine going to watch the latest James Bond film at the cinema to find the front 6 rows all standing up.It doesn't happen because everyone knows that you have to sit to watch the film. At this point I expect to hear the protagenists whine." but I always stand, I have always stood at football and I'm not going to change my ways " Well, I have news for you.....THINGS CHANGE. 100 years ago doctors perscribed cocaine - now it is a banned substance. 30 years ago you could drive a car without wearing a seatbelt - now you will get fined if you are found driving without one. Childrem under 12 are required (by law) to sit in a specialised car seat.

Unfortunately (for some) we live in a democracy and we can not pick and choose what laws we are going to obey and which ones we are going to ignore. For the greater good we have to obey the rule of law, and if you want to watch a game of football in the UK then you will have to "suffer" sitting down to watch it. We all understand that during certain periods of play it becomes almost universal to rise off your seat (during an attack, or at a corner) but this only usually lasts for 10/15 seconds before you sit down again.

So, reversing a point made by an previous post.................if YOU don't want to SIT DOWN at a football match, I advise you not to go !!!!!!

  • It sounds harsh but if the 6,950 want to stand then theres nothing the small minority can do.

You can say to the person infront to sit down but then they can't see so why should/they not see themselves to 'help' you when they've paid for their ticket.

1 Idea, At the start of the game if some are standing and others arn't, Why not ask someone at the front (who wants to stand) if you want to swap places then that way, They won't go home moaning they had to sit and you won't moan that you had to stand etc.

  • Don't know what some of you lot would do if you followed Man Utd or Leeds or someone who stand every game from the front row!

When our fans stand, I think, what about the people who have trouble standing for long periods were as most don't seem to care or think about that. We do have older fans too and there was a time these people were respected.
  • I was in my punching element :-)
What was all that confrontational stuff with HM Constabulary after the match?
It kicked off in our row when the penalty was awarded. All caused by some drunken fool chanting pretty offensive stuff & ending in the plod wading in to break up a 10 man brawl
