The fact is he wouldnt have made it into our team this year (maybe at Right Back, but not ahead of Hollands, Stephens or Alonso).
Yes he was our player of the year last year, but we were cack then. You cant afford to carry a guy who scores 1 goal a season in centre mid, and now we dont have to.
Not entirely fair. Jose's job has never been to create or score goals just break up play which he is good at. Some games he was immense, all over the place closing people down. 5 man midfield is the way to get the best form him.
Yes, I agree on the 5 man midfield point. However, we will clearly not be playing that in 2011/12, and probably wont ever in league 1, so I guess I was looking at it from that perspective.
I think people - Wednesday fans included - need to realise that it's because we knew there was a strong chance that he (and Racon) were both off, that has freed up some dough to go and get in some new midfielders. The club obviously decided that other players were better value for money, rightly or wrongly, and therefore never offered him what he was looking for.
That's not to say he's "shit", or that Wednesday "nicked" him off us. Simply we decided to look elsewhere and so did he. That's football - particularly in the lower divisions, which is where we both are after all.
Wonder what the odds will be on him getting sent off against us? Never really struck me as someone with a great deal of self control the way he would fly into ridiculous challenges having already been booked.
So, CP didn't think it was worth pushing the boat out to keep him, and he's left.
Good luck Jose - one of the select handful of players in the last few seasons that appeared to give a shit. For that you have my gratitude.
But I'm not bothered by this. We needed a clean start and a new team, and that is what we now have, and that is why we let him go. Simple really......so put yer puddings away and calm down Sheffielders!
P.S I like Sheffield too, btw. I'm sure Jose will as well. It will be interesting to see how he gets on.
This town weren't big enough for the two of us. Wish him all the best - a great trier but was never going to be good enough for what we're now trying to do.
People keep saying we have got far better players in already, what do people really know about these players? Hardly anything. I am gutted Semedo has gone. We are spending all this money on new signings and still offered our best player a 50% decrease in wages. Most passionate player we have had since getting relegated from the prem. Good luck Jose, dont blame you for leaving!
Good luck to Jose. What he lacks in skill he more than makes up for in effort .The sad thing is our demise started we he turned up and I'm not totally sure that is just coincidence. If he had gone to palace I would have hated the man but now he is at Wednesday I will clap him when he returns to The Valley.
Semedo hasn't delivered for us for some time now, and although you can't question his commitment, he is not what we want anymore - let alone all those yellows and reds !
He gave plenty, and was almost in tears when he scored at home last season. I met him several times in the street and he was 100% Charlton. We made him a low offer, and our POTY has moved on ( even if only sideways).
We have bought Exeter's POTY and a string of hungry players. Out with the old and in with the new - no hard feelings.
corrrr they think they've got one over on us. It's all a bit embarassing and a real lack of knowledge. If we had matched their contract offer he would have chose us obviously but we clearly didn't feel he was worth that. He wouldn't have started for us anyway.
God I'm glad he's gone. Sure he's returned about the most out of who Pardew signed close season 2007-2008, and sure I liked his determination and attempt to cover the huge holes Racon left. But he was a midfielder in our worst teams in living memory. He couldn't effectively tackle 50-50, in the air he'd shy away from every 50-50. Sure he'd never give up, and would constantly nip at players but he often didn't make an effective clean tackle to turnover play. As for offensive play he'd more often breakdown our attacks than not. Ultimately results bear out his effectiveness.
Both seasons in league one we had squads easily top six in terms of quality. I rarely remember Semedo dominating and setting the tone for our team. I do remember him busting a gut, and bringing no ability to influence the outcome of the game. If we won it was others that matched their opposite number and bettered them. Therein lay the problem, Semedo was our best/reliable central midfielder. Racon, Shelvey and Bailey weren't able or weren't bothered to tactically read a match so we were doomed to play with Semedo who was reliable but was a black hole offensively and on positive influence. Handicapped before we started if Bailey, Shelvey or Racon didn't deliver - game surrendered. As we all know his weakness in the air means he can never consistently be a cb at any level in the English game. His best games for me were the few at right back in our doomed 2008-2009 relegation year.
He is not champ class and he struggles to influence games at league one level. I'll not boo him as he gave his all for us. But frankly 6 or 8 grand is absolutely ludicrous for such a limited player. I'm glad he's no longer near our team.
What he lacks in skill he more than makes up for in effort .
That was true for Kish but not for Semedo in my book. I still can't believe you lot voted him player of the season. Yes he tried harder than anyone else, but also performed miles worse than the season before, giving countless free kicks away in ridiculous areas in the process.
Now on our OS - hidden right at the bottom of the interview with Harriott and Osborne. Also mentions Anyinsah has signed for Bristol Rovers.
Poor form from the club. After 150 appearences, I thought his departure would be announced differently. Not tagged onto the end of an existing story. Odd.
Not sure how anyone can say he was rubbish when he was voted Charlton's player of the year. Not sure either how anyone can say with any conviction that those we've brought in are better than Semedo - how many times have you actually seen them play ? Or are you just relying on Wikipedia and pretending your knowledge of third tier football is greater than it is ?
I sure hope the knew guys are better, or at least make us a better team - which is the main thing. But I don't know it and certainly wont be getting cocky that our player of the year has signed for a potential promotion rival.
Good luck Jose, hope Wednesday come second to us now.
The fact that he was available as a free agent and ended up at Sheffield Wednesday should be a reasonable indicator to his ability, not the best or worst player, just useful at this level for a certain style. For me, it is no surprise that he hasn't attracted clubs above our level, nor is it a surprise that it was a manager like Megson who offered him a deal, as his prefered style of play will suit Semedo. I look forward to our football being easier on the eye from now on, as I believe we will be far more entertaining without Jose. I appreciate what he has offered and given during his time with us and wish him well up north.
Personally i think the board are being cautious here because Semedo was loved by so many of our fans and know a majority of the fans will be disappointed that they couldn't/wouldn't do enough to keep him.
I rated Semedo and thought that last season he was one of only a few players who gave their all everytime they played. If we weren't offering him enough to stay then he is going to move on, simples. I will give him a warm welcome when he returns because personally i think he deserves.
Much more disappointed about Semedo going than Racon. However i am hoping with all the midfielders we have brought in we will be more than equipped to cope without him.
This town weren't big enough for the two of us. Wish him all the best - a great trier but was never going to be good enough for what we're now trying to do.
Now he's gone I just wanted to post my colours firmly to the mast and say that I always thought Bexley Dan was a better playmaker than Semedo. Honest.
My manager here in Pakistan is a Wednesday supporter - I found out the other day, when I mentioned the talk on their site about our new signings, that he is a moderator. I've just given him a reality check on Semedo since they seem to be over-reacting just a bit
I loved Jose! Proper battler, worked his backside off and genuinely seemed to love being at Charlton.
But as I've said before I just dont think he was ever good enough to play in a 442 formation and any team with him playing that will struggle to control the midfield and also be creative.
Would have loved him to stay as a backup squad player but now he's gone I'm not gutted at all.
Maybe it was less about the financial offer and more about the squad position he was being offered here compared to up there.

Gary, is this true?
The Pardew era is over everyone....

How do they know you Gary?
Semedo=
9/10 for passion and desire
6/10 for ability
1/10 for shooting
Good luck to the lad, hope he does well up there.

Top drawer for commitment but average when it comes to footballing ability.
We had to move on as a Club and I'm glad we have.
northern mongrels bite every time.

Never poty but not the worst.
Think we have better.
