Semedo to Wednesday

  • He is one of the few players to have given his all to the club over the last few years and is a much better player than people make out on here.  He was my favourite player whilst he was here for his passion but also because he was one of the few I thought could play at a higher level.

Sadly that comment at the end of last season about wanting to sign for life and his love of Charlton coupled with turning up at a club in the same division as us only a few months later means he has gone from hero to zero for me and ended up as bad as all those badge kissing idiots.

Personally I feel Semedo took an inflated wage for us for the time he was here - was that his fault - no, but at the end of last season i did think he may take that into account and sign on for another year at a lower wage...silly me.

Therefore unless we annouce we never actually offered him a contract at all I will certainly be booing him on his return.

  • I respect him, think hes a good profession bla bla but i still think he limited our play! I remember thinking it a lot in the 09/10 season.
  • Sad that he's gone, particularly to another League 1 side. Why say all that "I want to stay for life" stuff though?!

Apparently he was offered something around a 50% wage cut. Undoubtedly he's a better player than when he arrived and one of a very limited number of players who played consistently well over the last three years. I doubt he's getting the £6k that he was being pad, but I should think more than the £3k he was supposedly offered by us. If that's the case then I think many of us would have upped sticks. We have good replacements in already so I doubt he would have played that often this coming season so it's probably the best move for him as a footballer as well as financially.
  • For once i agree with Oggy.

People forget the year before last he would have won POTY if the spanners hadnt hijacked the votes. he was excellent when around better players, the leeds home game springs to mind. last year he was surrounded by crap and was pretty hit and miss. think he will do well up there although their reaction is well ott.
  • So he run around a lot, made the odd tackle, and passed sideways when a ball forward was an option, and was a captain who didn't lead by example.

Still don't know how he won the player of the year award

cos we were absolute shit and finished 13th in a pony league , so he was considered to be the best of a bad bunch based on he played more than wright philips and jackson who were definitley better than him last year
    Exactly.

Glad to see they're happy but no major loss to us now that we've built a brand new midfield.
  • Good luck to him I say. Was never too fussed with keeping him as he like Racon were key to us sinking.

Think its a shame though that his departure on the  official website has a few lines on bottom of the Osborne/Harriott page.

He deserves a proper goodbye on the website.
  • Are we going to announce a signing to counter this?
  • it's all about the money

and if this episode had been carried out in the premier league at two different clubs half of the freak show on here would be warbling on about how the premiershit is all money orientated and aren't we lucky that all our players love playing for our club

I reckon he would have got that it we had another signing to announce

  • A month ago I would've been gutted as we had no-one else in and we were getting best of one of best players

But in that time I think we've already massively improved our midfield as such he won't be missed and it hasn't weakened us as some Wednesday fans think it has. Would he ahve started as a regular this season in a midfield with Stephens, Alonso, Jackson, Green, Hollands? I'm not sure he would unless in a 4-5-1

Good luck Jose, wish him all the best but we were never going to pay him £5k a week he was on.

Time to move on, all of Pardews signings have now gone, Semedo was one of the better ones though
  • Three weeks ago this would have hurt, today I'm totally nonplussed. I've never really got the Semedo bashing on here but football is a sport that thrives on opinions. He gave his all and always appeared the model professional (but then so did Ryan Giggs!).

    Good luck to him.

    Hollands, Alonso, Stephens...
  • He's not a particularly good footballer (imho), but he did give it his all.

    Good luck, Jose.

  • All he does it goes sideways, in fact he practices doing it for an hour everyday!

Glad he's gone as we've got better players in already. Really don't understand why the Wednesday supporters are getting so excited?

  • More than happy with hollands. does the same thing but has more going forward and half the wages.
  • Good luck Jose and farewell Jose , i'm sure he didn't leave us for the money in the end.

I think their lack of transfer activity (so far) has got to them.
  • With all our new signings in midfield he probably wanted out and to have a fresh start. Charlton will miss him. It's a big season in question for CP.
Dissapointed, we are gana have almost a completly new team, we needed changes but needed Jose to stay with us.

  • Great News......welcome to Hillsborough Jose.........the special one

    Bloody hell!!
  • Was always a big fan of Semedo's, although I accept that's probably because he was just about the only one these past few years who looked like he gave a f*ck and got stuck in for the cause.

But I honestly can't ever remember seeing anyone doing their pieces over signing one of "our" players (although technically he wasn't "ours" any longer) like they are doing over on that forum. Seem a largely decent enough bunch though (Hello chaps, I know you reading this!) but there are puddings being pulled all over the place there.

Someone on there even said something about "sex wee". Must be a northern thing. Perhaps they're well into their water sports up there.

    Anyway, good luck Jose.
  • The fact is he wouldnt have made it into our team this year (maybe at Right Back, but not ahead of Hollands, Stephens or Alonso).

Yes he was our player of the year last year, but we were cack then. You cant afford to carry a guy who scores 1 goal a season in centre mid, and now we dont have to.

  • Loved seeing him give his all on the pitch but like people have said, with the three new central midfielders we've brought in it isn't a huge blow to lose him. I hope he does well (but not too well) for Wednesday. I'm a little disappointed after he gave that gushing interview saying he wanted to stay for life but I guess Powell decided he'd rather bring in fresh blood than spend June wrangling over a new deal for Semedo. Oh well.

What's really making me feel better though is how Wednesday fans are going mental, mostly because they've got a player off us. People are actually scared of us this year. Our signings so far have made such an impact people are wetting themselves over the idea of us losing a player. That's a confidence booster right there
  • corrrr they think they've got one over on us. It's all a bit embarassing and a real lack of knowledge. If we had matched their contract offer he would have chose us obviously but we clearly didn't feel he was worth that. He wouldn't have started for us anyway.
  • Really disappointed that Jose has left. He was the one
player over the last few years  who gave
his all for Charlton no matter what. However when he played in centre mid it did mean that the
rest of the Midfield had to do all the creating as other teams could just allow
Jose to have the ball knowing he was no threat and would give away silly free
kicks and get sent off at least once a season. We just haven’t had the players
to play around him. What disappoints me is that this seems to come down to
money. I expect we offered him a new contract at reduced terms which is fair as
he was over paid for the last few years. He has decided to chase the money
rather than stick around when things appear to finally be looking up and in
doing this taken a sideways step. Maybe its the modern day footballer who loves
the club that will pay him the most!!Good luck to him as I think in the right team with creative
players around him he could be an assist in breaking up play. Unless Sheff Wed
have some serious signings lined up I don’t think we will be seeing the best of
    Jose there.
  • Good luck to him , i guess he did not want to sit on the bench , because lets face it , if he had stayed and are new boys perform like they did for their old clubs he would of never of got a game , ok maybe the paint thingee ma jig cup . Always gave 100% and good move for him because it guarantees first team football.
  • I quite like Sheffield, a proper northern town with industry. I was gutted when they blew up the water cooling towers at the Tinsley Viaduct a few years back, that was an act of vandalism. Part of our industrial heritage demolished, although you could say that they were completing the job that Thatcher started a generation earlier with the mines and steel works.

Some good music from Sheffield too.

  • After his first goal at The Valley suddenly he was a brilliant player and apparently was the only player that should win player of the year. Now he's gone and actually he wasn't that great and Sheff Wed will be disappointed. Somehow we know for certain our new signings are definitely going to be much much better.

If Sheff Wed need someone to stay back in midfield, work hard, cover for team mates and win the ball they won't get much better at this level. If he plays in a 4-4-2 and they expect him to offer something going forward they will be very disappointed.

How many players have been poor here and good elsewhere, or good here but struggled at another club? It's about how the manager uses them and the players they have around them. Semedo can be a good player at this level just as he can look very limited in a struggling team (e.g. us under Powell last season).

I'm not bothered he's gone, I'm hopeful our new midfielders are just what we need, but just as he wasn't brilliant he isn't suddenly a poor player.
  • The fact is he wouldnt have made it into our team this year (maybe at Right Back, but not ahead of Hollands, Stephens or Alonso).

Not entirely fair. Jose's job has never been to create or score goals just break up play which he is good at. Some games he was immense, all over the place closing people down. 5 man midfield is the way to get the best form him.
