i can see this happening, i was a big critic of him but i accept the trying part, i think the biggest mistake was sticking with him it killed him the more he missed..
danny mills told me that varney had real issues realising that he was a pro footballer i cant see how any of the seasons the lad has had will have improved his confidence..
saying that he has proven himself at this level with crewe..
defining transfer moment of season this one if it happens will without doubt split the fans will put pressure on both parky and varney
I wouldn't be disappointed if he did sign, but also wouldn't be that bothered if we missed out on him.
I did rate him and was disappointed that we let him go especially as it was to pay Pardew off. But as others have said the fans were always split over him.
[cite]Posted By: GNelson[/cite]I'd be well happy for Varney to come back, reckon he'd do a real good job for us as a back-up for Martin.
Varney is way better than back up for us now, and I don't think Martin is really suited to playing out and out up front. Varney would be an excellent signing in this division, cant see us getting anyone better, I'd love to have him back.
Varney scored a fair few for Crewe in this league, imho he needs to drop down a league in order to re start his career as cannot see him regularly starting in the Championship at Derby or elsewhere. Like the lad a lot, works hard and has genuine pace and mobility, something we are lacking up top. Martin is not a striker and I agree with paulsturgess that we are not going to do much better.
I always thought Varney could of come good for us, he had a lot going for him, pace, decent touch, decent in the air, deceptively strong with a great workrate. Unfortunately when the preasure was on he didn't deliver in front of goal.
I'd be very happy to see him back if the finances make sense and think he could thrive in the less preasurised environment we find ourselves in currently .
Think we need a player of this mould in the side for sure. When you see the team today and look what options we have on the bench, with all the respect to Akpo when your looking for a goal and see him taking his tracksuit off its not the most comforting site in the world.
Providing we can work him into the squad finance wise then i'd have him here no problem. Who else are we going to get thats better? We all keep saying we need someone proven at this level....Varney is just that.
Sky reporting that Bristol City are set to confirm deals for Jon Stead & Brett Pittman. Can't see Varney going there if that is the case. Really don't see the QPR link as a genuine one either.
That leaves us. I assume our approach is the loan interest Clough has been talking about.
Personally don't think it will work. He didn't settle in London before, why would he now?.
Clough wrote;- 'A number of clubs, including Bristol City and Queens Park Rangers, are interested in the 27-year-old striker and he looks likely to leave, either on a permanent or loan deal.
"There are one or two very, very strong enquiries and it is getting some way down the road now," said Clough, who confirmed that if Varney moved on, it would free up some cash to strengthen the Rams squad. "Financially, Luke is one of the highest earners at the club, so that comes into the equation."We have got one or two things in place now if a deal for Luke happens and we would hope to have somebody in before the end of the transfer window.'
.................
Even if we could afford him, I'm very much in two minds. Like most others, I loved so much about him, but he's tainted by the Pardew era and that crumbling under pressure in front of goal, was and still is, a serious question mark. If he did come and then didn't meet expectations immediately, the boo boys would be on his back again very quickly. A high risk choice IMO.
[cite]Posted By: JT[/cite]Never forget his miss at QPR.
His last game for us, I think, and also Parky's first game in charge.
Remember thinking at the time that we'd done well to recoup what sounded like a decent percentage of what we'd paid for him.
Might be a very different player at this level, but would be concerned that he'd be under a lot of pressure from the start.
This was one of the players that Pardew 'invested' in who simply did not deliver!..... He was not alone, but despite running around a lot , he did not deliver the goals that was expected of him, despite several chances!
So wether he is the best striker on offer as posted his wages seem far too high for his past performances, and Derby on the box yesterday looked very weak in the striking department, which probably confirms his value.... so a no from me.
I'm not sure. Pace and work rate would be useful. Can he settle in London? Is he going to be booed and struggle under the pressure if he has a bad start? If we signed him and paid say £200k, he'd certainly be under pressure because that's a big fee for us at the moment.
I'd say it depends on what our other options are. Ideally we'll find someone who hopefully wouldn't be as much of a gamble when it comes to his goalscoring record and settling in London.
Would be happy to see Varney back too, if the rumour is true.
His wages may be high but I suspect that when he signed for Derby they simply picked up his Charlton contract - which was signed in 2007 in more favourable economic conditions and given by a relatively wealthy Charlton with Prem aspirations. If he was signing for a champ side now I doubt he'd be offered anywhere near as much, so if he's realistic about his career then whatever Charlton can afford to pay him now, might still seem attractive.
if it's between Varney and Benson, then i'll go for varney. when he was here before, Pardew always played him on the wing or up front by himself; stick him up front with Abbott and he'll do well, i'm sure of it.
Varney has done it at this level albeit 4 years ago, also when not scoring (which happened a lot at Charlton) he does not go missing in terms of work rate and running the channels.
Benson is older and unproven, also judging by comments from those who have seen him play, if Benson does not score, there is not much else to his game. Varney over Benson for me.

jury out in the nla think tube at the moment
Equally Varney at this level and alonside boott'martin reid and waggy could ne good.
Still not convinced he want to come back to london or us or that it would work.
Apparently QPR are also rumoured to be a London club.
So if QPR or ourselves are in fact the 2 clubs chasing him, then at the moment it's London or bust for Varney.

The great thing about this season for me is that we have finally got over the hangover of the catastrophe that was the Pardew era.
Surely the last thing we need is the return of a player who (even if it wasn't his fault) in a way epitomises everything that went wrong ?

So is Parky after Benson and Varney? Or is it one of the two.
He was one of the best, most hardworking channel runners I have seen, him and Abbott would destroy defences at this level

Summed him up
Their clubs let them go on frees to free up that dosh.
we shall see.

I've heard a figure of £250k being banded about, which i believe is way out of our budget.

we all ready have two 6 foot plus strikers we need a smaller quicker striker and varney fits the bill
