Are we talking about the same Luke Varney that by the end of his time with us was missing a sitter per game? Seem to recall QPR away being a pretty painful experience!

Is this the same Luke Varney who we were led to believe couldnt settle in London?

Simple fact is he would cost a fortune in terms relative to our budget and he simply isnt worth it.
  • There seem to be a lot of reasons why this won't happen, but personally I would welcome him back (on significantly reduced wages, of course).
  • Liked him because he was so hard working, but no, don't want him back for all of the reasons given above by others. Plus I highly doubt he'd want to come nor could we afford him.

I was a bit disappointed with him first time round as he showed he had the talent but it just never seemed to happen, I know a QPR fan who thought he was dreadful because the sitters he missed against them. However at this level and maybe being clear first choice I think he'd be very good if we could afford him, may not be the 20 goal a season man everyone is desperate for but he could 11 at Sheff Wed last season so 15 would be possible and respectable considering what else he'd add to the team.

I remember in the 4-2 win against Reading on Sky (Think we may have been top of the league at that stage) early in the 2nd season he scored and went straight to Pardew so I don't know whether he was closer to him than Parky or something? Pure speculation there.
  • Remember though that when we signed Varney, there was a huge story circulating the papers about a "well known recently relegated side" who had signed a player from league one offering him 25k per week (and subsequently he turned down a move to Boro). Therefore, is he going to be willing to come down from that wage to the 1-2k we can afford now? Also, will Derby let him go for next to nothing? Maybe on loan though...
  • I would not like to see Varney back at The Valley. He's from the school of strikers that always hit the ball as hard as they can regardless of the situation. Can see why Pardew asked him to play like he would in the 'playground'.
  • Varney was a hard working forward, but some of his misses particularly near the end of his time with us were truly awful.
  • Is Gary Alexander actually that prolific?

  • Ah, Varney. The headless chicken's headless chicken. If we are going to rise from the ashes then recruiting the people who put us there is not the way forward. In terms of composure in front of goal he makes dear old Lisbie look like Sir Clive in a particularly ruthless mood.
  • I first saw Varney in the flesh away to Blackpool when we got stuffed 5-2...

I was amazed at his turn of speed and his running off the ball was non stop...

Down side is he's a bit of light weight but I would definitely have him back...

Whether Parky would welcome back a Pardwash reject is another matter...

Recovering from a bad injury, overweight, would hate to see him at Charlton plus he's always in the betting shop in Catford.

Have to say, I didn't mind when he hit the ball as hard as he could into the top corner of the Palace net!
  • I remember when we signed him originally, I was absolutley delighted, when we went down him and Maynard were my 2 number one choices, shame it never worked out but under Pardew nothing worked out except the signing of like Semedo and Bailey.

True, but for me that doesn't make up for the fact that he missed countless sitters from 6 yards, including THAT miss against Burnley when he rounded the keeper then hit the defender on the line from 3 yards. Absolutely no composure what-so-ever, and that doesn't stand you in good stead in any league.
  • Sign Varney ... I still got my "Fantastic Friday" t-shirt ... The day Luke Varney destroyed Crystal Palace
  • I'd have him back personally, has pace which we need, versatile(bonus), can take it past someone. also one of the players which you think if he scores a couple to get his confidence then he would be very good, he's done it at this level before sign him up!
  • There's an element of better the devil you know with this and I can think of worse signings. Based on the testimonials of what type of player Abbott is, Varney is the kind of player who could make a good foil as he's quick, hard working and would stretch defences with his running of the channels. Was also a decent crosser of the ball so would potentially get a few assists for Abbott goals too.

He crumbled a bit under the pressure last time, but that was in the Championship. If we signed him but didn;t overload the hype saying he'd score 20 goals, but rather said he was bought to help bring the best out of Abbott then it might work.

I'd be willing to give him a second chance with us, but I would have my reservations, not least as he didn't seem to settle down south too well.
  • He'd get in our side on the right wing no problem, so yes.
  • Ian Darke on Sky just said that Luke Varney isn't in the Derby side today because he's joining either Bristol City, QPR or Charlton and a deal is very, very close.
  • well i know what looks the least attractive out of them 3 teams

They just mentioned on sky sports cov v derby game that Luke Varney is about to be sold to either us, QPR or Bristol City

    Damn...beat me to it lol
  • Looks like it may be just us and QPR now in the running, Bristol City are set to sign Brett Pitman:

Personally I hope we get Varney, would be a great signing for league one and is the type on striker we need; Pace, plays on the shoulder and hard working too.
  • Apparently, according to the bloke on Sky just now ............................... Nigel Clough is sitting in the press box because he didn't want to wear a suit and go in the directors box.

Yep, a non-scoring striker - just what we need.
  • Talksport bloke was saying that he'd been left out today and was very likely to be on the move before the end of the month. I'd love to have him back, just can't believe that we'd be able to match what he's on now or what QPR/Bristol City now, let alone afford what I would have thought would be a pretty significant transfer fee by our standards, certainly well into 6 figures.
  • Why the hell would QPR want him? Can only see him going down a division if he does move
  • Off_it: Yes, he wasn't prolific with us, but who was when we were in the championship? Saying that - who has been since Darren Bent? Burton and Bailey has been our highest scorers in a season since we got relegated from the Premier League, they've only got 13/14 each.

It's only my opinion, because I'd rather have a striker running his socks off, trying his best every game then not a striker at all. Sometimes you need to take into consideration and appreciate the work players do, rather than judging them on their scoring records. Then again, its not like Varney can't score, he was "prolific" for Crewe in this league the season before we got him, yes it may have been just one season but who says he can't do that again at the same level given the chance?

I'm not saying we are definately getting him, but its been said that we're interested, and as i said, I personally wouldn't mind having him back.
It's my birthday so i'm off here now and getting ready for going to Charlton.
    Come on you reds!

I doubt we'd sign Varney now we have Martin. Would love to see him back (and the boo boys off his back) clearly the lad just lost his confidence under Pardew.
  • QPR can surely afford someone more proven at Championship level?
  • I used to like Varney, but if we have the dough to spend on his (likely) transfer fee and wages then I would rather we spent it on someone else.
