I think people really underestimate the gulf between league 1 and championship, Luke Varney is the shining example. Not only did he score for fun when at Crewe but also made the team of year. I remember he tried really hard and looked really upset when we started flopping, personally I would be more than happy with Luke and Abbott up front, big man little man combo I reckon would be suberb with Akpo and Tuna as back up.
Really can't see it happening. The fact is he is still under contract at Derby and he has gotta be worth 700k min so the board have made an effort to spend 100k on two players. I can't see that amount avaliable just on one player.
Don't mind Varney, but as he's clearly not a champ striker he should be only paid what he's worth and that's 1-2 grand a week. If Derby don't want that, then his skill and qualities are massively over-rewarded. Plus my personal oppinion of him is that he'll never score many goals again at League one level.
He played with Nicky Maynard and scored, and only ever looks like scoring if he plays with another pacey striker. Don't want us to play that way, and neither can we anyway. He always looked best at inside right or left, and my own personal opinnion is that Waggy is of far better potential. Waggy's shown improvement and competitiveness that Varney never did; Varney tried his best to close down but couldn't tackle effectively. Varney goes in my personal bin of Bradbury strikers who should have an ever descending career after their big move, he may only be propped up by the ridiculous wages he earns and the madness of managers but he'll never score prolifically again.
And as for appalling man management with Pardew, one of his biggest mistakes was Varney but not for that reason. He couldn't stop himself talking up Varney, and how great he was just that he needed a bit more confidence in himself. He even got other strikers to say how good Varney could be. Whilst his attacking performances as striker was toilet, he continued to pick him and only after thirty matches did he become a pure apologist for him. Could have left him inside left/right were he seemed to score all his goals, or make assists but no kept him up front and he kept on missing one-on-ones.
Too much money and too much risk if wages can't be reduced, pretty much the type of signing from the last few seasons that have got us in this financial situation.
I'd welcome him back. Spot on Oggy, he'd give us wing options too. Easiest way to put pressure on him would be to demand 20-odd goals from the start. Maybe though, easing him in alongside a hopefully goal-scoring Abbot might restore confidence to go with the undoubted pace and hard work. Yes please.
[cite]Posted By: guinnessaddick[/cite]Just text my mate who is FD at Derby, the only way he is coming to us, is if we pay all his wages.
Can't see Derby or any club, paying the wages of deadweight on their books like Varney if they can avoid it. No doubt a loon of a champ manager will desperately offer to pay a fair ammount of Varney's wages come October, but I'd imagine his registration will be owned by Derby until his contract runs out or they pay him off. I'm glad we're priced out of the market on someone who gives tiny returns upon the massive investment paid to him.

Remember Pardew saying after Varney had scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Palace ........ that before the match, he'd had a chat with Varney and told him, ".......to play like you're in the school playground."
Not only those 2 cracking goals, but remember Varney absolutely skinning Palace skipper Mark Hudson, who cynically fouled him as he broke clear.
Varney was on fire that night. Maybe his best performance in a Charlton shirt?
Certainly showed what he's capable of.
I would rather we signed a proven goalscorer if I am honest.
If you could get points on running around a lot then resign him but I think that a lot of people are forgetting that by and large Varney couldnt finish his dinner.
You are talking rubbish varney was successful for numerous seasons before signing for us problem was Pardew put too much weight on his shoulders. What oggy said too!

He has only ever scored more than 10 in the league once, the season before we signed him.
I really can't believe that people are talking about the same Luke Varney here.
He was absolute guff for us and what's he done since? Derby would want a fee and his wages would be high - so a lot of outlay for not a lot in return. Isn't that the sort of thing that got us in this mess in the first place?
But Offy ..... we're not talking about the Luke Varney who was playing for us in the Championship, having to step up a level carrying the burden and expectation caused by his huge fee.
We're simply suggesting that he could play either/both of the 2 roles that Parky is seeking 2 new players to cover in our League One team. Signed or borrowed on loan as a versatile striker, it would also provide dependable cover/options for Waggy, thus 2 positions covered by 1 player.
And it would depend on finances to be viable..... but then he could save paying an additional player to cover at RM.
He was very effective in League One when Pardew signed him., scoring 25 goals in League and Cup.
Rather than 8-10 goals each season in the Championship, perhaps League One is his true level?
He's scored 30 goals in a 170 odd games in the champ. I don't personally believe he'll ever be prolific again at league one level, his career is on the down slope. At inside right/left he might work. But I'd rather see Waggy on the right, and also see any wages spent actually on a player who has proven himself to be effective over more than one season..... even if it is at league one level.
I can't believe this rumour has any legs, but if it did, wouldn't be disappointed. It is easy to forget that at this stage of our history, we had just fallen out of the Prem, had been used to the quality that was Bent, Di Canio etc in previous seasons and we were playing under that utter loser Pardew. Did Varney stand that much chance of impressing us all? A league one striker the season before who netted over 20 times and he followed that up with us with 8 goals in the Championship. Pace, has proven he can score and now has 3 years more experience, so if it were a goer, could work out well.
Oggy, how many years ago was that "success"? What's he done since?
Sometimes once a player "loses it" , "it" never comes back. Let's face it, he's not a youngster anymore, has earnt a decent living thus far and picks up a good screw. I would question someone's desire and hunger to drop back down to try and do it all again - that's not just meant as a dig at him but a question about any personality in general.
Sure, sometimes it can happen, but with someone apparently as "fragile" as LV then I would have to doubt it. Would much rather we spent what little money we have on someone younger, hungrier and on the up - a bit like him three or four years ago if you like.

Ahem, McClown effective in league one....Need I say more?
Another point, Izale McLeod WAS prolific once - will he ever be again? To be honest I would probably back him over LV - but I wouldn't want either of them anywhere near our club, tho for different reasons.
Ha ha ..... I've been beaten up, and reeling in the corner.
it's all subjective anyway, only a 606 messageboard rumour, and no doubt the finances don't add up...... he'll go to Millwall instead for £250k, and Lisbie and Varney will score 35 goals between them and Millwall finish mid-table.
But IMO Varney is definitely the type of player we're still missing.
Parky will just have to sign the fabled 20+ 'proven goalscorer' for free or a nominal fee.
Plenty of those about, surely?
At a time when we're definitely stabilising and looking upwards again, I'm not crazy about the idea of signing someone so inexorably linked to our decline - irrational or silly though that may be. Varney has been a fading force for several years now and lets not forget that it was at our club that his confidence was shot to pieces. Will a return here really be the place to revive his career? I can already hear the tutting and see the phrase 'same old Varney' forming on the lips of our ever forgiving support.
I guess we could hope that returning to league 1 is rock bottom for him, and he'd use that to spring back up, but it'd be an expensive gamble (although not as much as last time!), and as Off_It says, expensive gambles are what got us into this mess in the first place.
What Shite, goal scorers are what they are , and yes Varney was short of confidence. Did anyone else witness the miss of a tap in against Burnley? That just maybe at the the time could have turned our season up wards.

Where do you find one of those for nothing or a 'nominal fee'......?
If they're available, they cost more than we can pay.
But their clubs hold on to them if they can.
Anyway, Varney was Crewe's PotY and 20 goal striker when Charlton signed him.
So already a 'proven goalscorer' at League One level.

Agree about Pardew. Got 9 last season for Sheff Wed, not bad in the Championship in a poor side.

I'll take your McLeod and raise you Andy Gray.
(There's a pattern emerging here!)

Ah, but the Charlton Board are still owed a favour by the Derby directors - for selling them Derek Hales in 1976.
but i would be really surprised to see him back
better learn where the goal is could in the end he couldnt hit a barndoor
