That's cropped up on the rumours thread.
Thoughts ?
Personally, he is the type of player I think we need to add. Has faults and has lost his way a little. But does have pace, gets defenders turned and runs ther channels well. I think with confidence he could kick on again, plus he knows the club and set up.
Had hoped we could bring someone like John Obika in on loan, but certainly wouldn't be disappointed if there was any substance to this rumour.

I liked and supported him when he was here for the reason you give - but after he finally went had time to reflect and realise just how much the guy cost us. Maybe not entirely his fault, but we don't want him back.
Agree that a player of that type is what's needed, but not him now. Surely there must be a younger, cheaper (in terms of wages) version out there of a hard working pacey channel runner who can't score?
But if he was to reappear I would still support him and the team, in fairness i'd support pretty much anyone if their in a Charlton shirt, just personally think its a massive gamble, we need nothing but positive vibes from the supportors this season, if the vocal element of our support were more open minded then it might be diff but unfortunatly theyre not (well unless the 2/3k missing from last season were the same idiots we are all embarresed to call charlton fans - here's hoping!!)
Just lacked a bit of confidence with us. Just keep remembering when he took it round the burnley keeper I think and tried walking it in. Would still have him down the valley though
He is a proven striker at this level and will get goals.
As Kenny Jackett says, nothing is certain about the Brentford move yet.

He needs a nice arm around him and reassurance
his work rate and pace were second to none his finishing a bit hit and miss to say the least !
For where we are to get a player like him would be a result
Hope he comes back as long as wages aren't too lumpy
For me to be +ive it's gotta be a good thing
So won't happen then and we'll have to pretend kakpo isn't worse than the clown :-(
'Also, given AFKA's 'devils advocate' post, it wouldnt surprise me if AFKA had been given a little wink on this rumour, I said 'WINK'.
Or am I Lisbieing it miles over the bar!!!
Disco, this springs from the above. A drink in a Blackheath pub with a Charlton employee. Derby may be prepared to let Varney come here, but if I had spent a million + on him, I guess they would want something back for their troubles.
An entertaining rumour nonetheless.
It seems that Bauza also fits the bill as the creative forward capable of doing something different and unpredictable around the box, clever with a good touch - a classy footballer at this level. The type of player that could unlock packed defences.
If Bauza does sign, we need one more senior striker to complete the set.......... and what we are lacking, as pointed out already, is the pacy, hard working channel runner who can play off the main striker.
Varney is certainly that type of player, and while his previous spell was not so successful, he shows the attributes we're looking for - graft, hard work, doesn't hide, pacy, willingness to do whatever is required of him., honest pro. Sure, he's not so lethal in a 'fox in the box' role ........ but given a bit of a free role and licence to go at defenders, he can shoot well enough on the run.
And he was that 20+ goal striker in League One when we signed him before.
Which is what we say we're looking for right now.
;-)
That's the main issue for me, if we signed him and he didn't get off to a good start, like we said about Lisbie, could he handle the abuse from some of our fans?
But that was because he was our only saleable asset at the time .... and he was sacrificed to pay off Pardew.
Actually, he did play one game under Parky at QPR .....we dominated for long periods but unluckily lost 2-1.
Varney missed a sitter - but at least he always busted a gut to get into the right place at the right time.
Edit: I doubt it was Parky's idea to sell Varney, the decision no doubt made by the Board to raise that sum to pay off Pardew.
So possibility Parky could well be exploring getting Varney back.
He would already have passed Parky's 'character and honest pro' test.
Why are they getting rid of Alexander? That's madness![/quote]
It sure is. They can't guarantee him a game this season so are letting him listen to what Brentford have to say. I reckon he would get at least 15 goals for Charlton.
So that's the RM also covered, as well as striker.
Got a great cross on him too - remember at Southampton with 10 men after Semedo sent off, he came on as sub? Absolutely shafted his fullback down the right wing, took the ball almost to the line and fired over a fabulous cross on the run for Big Chris to power into the net for that last gasp winner.
He'd also be great as a wide forward playing narrow (did I really say that? haha) in a 4-3-3.
So versatile player, hard running, team player ..... can produce, crosses, assists and goals.
2 positions covered with 1 player, striker and RM. What are we waiting for ....?
;o)
Still dreaming of Darren Bent and the Prem, Sam?
;o)
Worked with Parky so he knows what he's getting from him and his energy, coupled by his ability to double up as a winger could be very useful indeed
I really liked him and if he had some confidence could be extremely useful
But yeah get him in if we can!
