[quote][cite]Posted By: Valley11[/cite]No concrete evidence that the Richard Murray's trio are Fortune, Benson and Varney but if all three sign then it's difficult to see how they fit into the team.
Fortune and Fry will be back-up to Dailly and Doherty, which could mean Llera is sold (?).
Varney could edge out Waggstaff who, IMO, has been our best player so far this season.
Benson will be a sub to start with but what does that mean for Sodje?
Ultimately we need a bigger squad and these are good problems to have but it's interesting to consider how the team will change in the coming weeks.[/quote]
If we did sign these three, then I'd fancy us to win the whole thing. I'd be really worried if I had laid us on Betfair at the start of the season!!
I'd be delighted to have Varney back. I never understood why so many people slated him, other than the fact Pardew signed him. He had decent pace, was a decent finisher, plus he worked his backside off. I'd take him over someone like Mooney on every ability, and I think he'd be good backup on the right and left wing as well.
Parky did say that any signings would be to push players out of the first team and onto the bench. I'd say Benson would definately do that to Sodje leaving Abbott/Benson as first choice pairing up-front and I can see either Martin/Varney unfortunatley pushing Waggy out of the team. However, I can't see how we can play Abbott,Benson,Martin and Varney so either Varney or Martin will also miss out. Of course Martin could push Reidy out on the left. The midfield combo seems certain to be Semedo/McCormack if fit with Martin/Jackson other options there. If these signings come off it'll be a decent enough squad for a play-off play and maybe automatic given a fair wind.
Only the Forch signing fails to stack up for me. We don't need five centre halves. Unless one is going of course.
Saying all that I can't see Varney coming back and I've heard there is another name in the frame that is much more likely.
He wasn't really a decent finisher, if he was he would still be here and we probably would be in the Championship....however he's light years better than say a Mooney, as he would at least get into danger areas.
I think he was a decent finisher. Not amazing but certainly one of the best since Bent. ( I realise thats not a high bar) Maybe not quite ready for the championship but given time I think he would have been. But regardless we're not in the championship we're in league one, where he is proven, and where it's a year long loan so if we got promoted we wouldnt have to keep him anyway. I personally think we should have kept him and was as gutted when he left as I was when Bougherra left. Anyway it's all irrelevant as I suspect he'll be off to another championship team, or at least not us.
ps I'm good Dazzler thank you for asking! and back living in London town again! How's you?
Fry is primarily a left-back, so he is cover for jackson until Youga is fit. then there's mambo... who does make number 5. (damn it, got that stupid tune in my head now)
QPR are apparently after Jason Roberts and Dave Kitson; so Varney can't one of their main targets.
Whether he plays up front or down the channels I think in this league he will get goals. If he plays up top with Abbott, varneys pace and abbotts hold up play could be a parntership in the making with Martins creativity just behind the 2 strikers would be unreal.
Varney did ok for us he didn't set the world alight but he was decent and with a bit of luck thongs could have been different to group him with mccloed is obsurd

exactly. when Varney was with us he was put up front on his own and was having feed off long balls. stick him up front with Abbott and give him some proper service and he'll score 15-20 goals.
Thebest thing bout Varney is he can play in 3 or 4 positions and do it decently. As you say Greg he is decent and also proven at this level. People forget his assists too.
If we sign all three I'll be pleased...
P.s I am good ta, bet it's good to be back in London town! How are the little ones? And how's the photography going ?
When I think of Varney I always think back to the last game of the season against Coventry, where him and Gray looked absolute world beaters, what went wrong?
I hope he does come back so I don't have to change my user name!!
I always thought he was a decent player and got himself into good scoring positions, the problem was he bottled it when it came to sticking the ball in the net.
Saying that, if we got him on a season loan as back up, I still think that it would be a decent signing.

I grouped him with McLeod just to show that just because you scored a few goals several seasons ago doesn't mean you can still do it now. Neither Varney or McLeod have 'proven' themselves at any level- they've had 1 good season in their careers.
I know nothing! I get so wound up with these posts where people infer that they know something but won't share it with the rest of the board. I mean, what is the fucking point.

Maybe people have been asked not to pass info on.
Don't see the problem - Large isnt gloating that he may know something. People hear things all the time.
[cite]Posted By: stop shouting[/cite]He does it all the time. Why feel the need for making such a broad comment & not backing it up with anything of even remote substance.
as if the whole thread isn't speculation eh. I'm just speculating that it isn't Varney.
as said read the rumours thread, it may give you a clue. BTW, I don't do it all the time, cheek. The last time I did I suggested Worner as a signing about a month before he signed. As WSS says sometimes you hear something but are asked not to pass it on.

Amazed by the amount of people saying this. We've played 3 games FFS.
Give 'em a chance.

I'll be happy if we don't sign him, yes! Especially if he goes to Palace.
What?!

Dailly/Doherty/Llera/Fortune at CB.

Yawn, what a predictable answer. I know something you don't know etc

Sadly, that is the point.
