Some people will give credit due where it's due ...... and other people have already set their mind against the player, regardless of how he actually performs.
[cite]Posted By: LargeAddick[/cite]one goal doth not a striker make. I mean I've seen Heskey and Lisbie score better goals than that.

What Oggy said.
I don't think anyone is making out that Mooney is going to be our saviour and fire us to promotion. However, to say he has no technical ability is just not true.
I realise that one good goal doesn't make a good striker, and I too have seen big Emile and super Kev score better goals, but the goals against Gillingham and Swindon were not goals that every professional footballer could score. Therefore I believe he has talent. He is inconsistent and too lightweight, but there are plenty of worse strikers in this division. Assuming Burton is going, if we were to sign Mooney he would be our best striker. I too am concerned by that, but I'd much rather we signed Mooney, knowing his limitations, rather than a completely unproven and potentially even more useless non-league striker.

Yeah it was a good goal against Gillingham, fair play to him. However, ive seen enough of David Mooney at home & away to realise he isnt a very good footballer...even at this level.
[quote][cite]Posted By: ChrisWhytesBaldhead[/cite]Shouldn't every player who pulls on the shirt get the support of the fans for at least a season?
Or is it a case of hammering them until they prove you wrong?[/quote]
More the case of hammering them till they prove you right, after their confidence has been shot to pieces.
I remember Iwelumo who was not universally liked scoring against West Brom away and a fellow Charlton supporter telling me he wished he hadn't cause he couldn't stand Iwelumo. Looks like if Mooney does sign then any goals he scores will be held against him.
It does seem like some people use the excuse of going to the football to have an excuse to moan for 90 minutes. I guess it's a good way to let off some steam but unfortunate for the target of their abuse.
oh god not this again. I go and support the team for 90 minutes, whoever is playing that day. If i wanna moan about how pony one of our players is on an internet messageboard then i will.
Considering Mooney is probably paid quite a decent amount of money for rarely showing his 'talent' then i dont think he's too hard done by.
The bloke scores the goal of the season against Gillingham with some brilliant skill on the ball and they say "Oh, that's only one goal!"
Is he a Darren Bent? No.
But he is just about all we can afford right now so, although people are fully entitled to not rate him as a player, anyone who boos him before or during a game should be ashamed of themselves.
I can hack booing wankers like JFH, Faye, Marcus Bent, Thomas and Bouazza who could not be bothered to even try but Mooney puts in 100% and does not deserve to be abused.
I think he has the traits to be a very good striker. He always seemed to work hard for us, ok, not having the most prolific of spells up front, but trying his best for the club, & grabbing a few vital goals along the way.
He was still playing in Ireland 2 years ago, & it's not always easy to make a jump to the English leagues. Hunt, Doyle & Long have made the step up very well, but not all players will make that kind of leap instantly. Roy O'Donovan is another Irish import who has taken a bit more time to develop, but finished the season very strongly at Hartlepool.
I think some people forget that we are not able to attract the quality of players we have been privvy to, over the past 10 years, anymore. That is down to the division we find ourselves in & finances not allowing it.
There is a lot of frustration & worry around the club & I can understand that coming out when the opportunity arises(mainly the games). Unfortunately this is mostly against the players, & sometimes it can come across as a wee bit harsh. I value Mooney much more for his effort, than someone like Hasselwank, who deservedly got/gets the abuse he did/does for being a lazy, moneygrabbing waster, during his time with us.
For the booers and haters and the no raters, with our budgets cuts and our status declined you are gonna have a field day next season, if you are going to go apopleptic about players when we are top 4 for the majority of the season, imagine what next season is going to be like, time for the valium, maybe the shop will brand then CAFC and sell em.
there is nothing in our pot, no bits of cash under our pot, we have sold the pot, there is no cash down the sides of our sofa. Thats the only reason Mooney is being looked at.
I think we should try and keep anyone who wants to play for the club at the club. The sum of all parts and all that. Millwall showed a team without any world beaters can do well.
Need to get a bit of unity in the squad and with the fans. Mooney isnt the best but he knows the club now and his team mates and the league.
I know a lot of people are stonewall set against him, but like many others have said I think he is a promising, talented, committed but lightweight player. As per Dabos comments, I would be happy with Mooney as one of our three main strikers, but hope we can still get in a no.1 striker too.
Then again why would he come given the abuse from some (so-called) supporters in a couple of games before he'd even kicked a ball?
not going to happen. for starters, he would cost us money. Even if we had the money to buy him; would Parky want to? he didn't exactly set the world on fire. Then even if we had the money and wanted him; would he want to come to us?... doubtful.
I think Mooney got a bad press last year and I would welcome him back as long as he was one of a group of strikers.
He has hardly played for Reading and previously had loan spells at Norwich and Stockport, so has never played a full season in English football . A good pre season and he could fly.
oh God, not Mooney again. I'd be happy never to see him at The Valley again unless with the opposition as then I'd be happy to know they were playing with ten men.
We're never going to be able to afford the finished product. Therefore we have to take a bit of a risk on a young player who has proved that he has some talent. If Mooney can build some body mass and add some strength I think he showed in patches that he could be a very good player. Whether the fans will show some patience and get behind hm is another issue.
[cite]Posted By: queensland_addick[/cite]If Mooney can build some body mass and add some strength
I've seen people mention that a lot. Agree we won't get the complete player or finished product, but he's 26 this year. Isn't it like saying if Sam could work on his fitness he'd be much better? It might happen but you don't see many players drastically improving things like strength or fitness in their mid 20s.
fair point, but relative to Sam he's fresh to professional football, so there might be scope to work on his strength - hopefully Parky's staff have an idea if there is.
[cite]Posted By: ValleyGary[/cite]On a free?..maybe
For a fee?...leave it out.
I dont usually say this but i agree with you there VG, i was one of his biggest fans but dont think we should pay money for. if he's 3 would be useful and could get us a few goals but im sure theres better out there if we have any money on players which is unlikely imo
Can see Mooney going on loan again. Surely anyone that might want to buy him can't afford him. Anyone that can afford him, will surely be able to afford someone more proven. Unless Reading decide to let him go for a very small fee.
Jebus Large'! You really seem to hate this guy. Did he try to seduce Mrs Large, or something?
Seems to me there are quite a few players/donuts who have played for our club over the past few years, that I would justify your anger on, rather than Mooney.

You'll be issuing a fatwa next! ;-)
I don't hate him, I've never met the guy and he's probably a very decent bloke. However, I don't rate him at all as a footballer and certainly not as a striker. I've seen very few worse than him in a Charlton shirt and in fact would restrict even that list to Mike Small and Akpo Sodje.

"David Mooney, who spent last season on loan at Charlton Athletic, could be sold to the League One side" - just a suggestion, but does perhaps indicate that a move is on the cards at least.
