But I warn everyone now. The first person I hear booing him in the upper north will get the hiding of their lives. It will make one of Curb_it's headlocks look like a cuddle!!!!!
Powell with Curbs as Director of football. Would show huge intent from the new owners.
Powell on his own is a huge risk and after KIns geting the sack i would rather not se another legend get tarnished. Of course thats assuming he dont do the business.
We all love Chris Powell and it would be a very popular choice but remember so was Alan Pardew. His name was chanted before he even came. We didn't hate him, we thought he was great (well, most of us).
So far all we know is that his odds have shortened. £100 bet might have done that. He may not have even applied for the job or could have turned us down flat.
CP has a perfect CV for someone looking to make that first step into being No.1 manager at a Club. Badges, time served as coach, Admin experience with PFA (don't underestimate that side of the manager's role), right age but it would still be a big first step. We all know he has drive, enthusiasm and personality but many other "legends" have found that once the honeymoon period is up and they have to impress players who may never heard of them or aren't in awe of their name it isn't that easy.
So if he comes and fails does that matter? Not to me. Kins is no less a legend to me now than he was before. Ditto Steve Gritt who I think we have sacked 3 times now. So for me that isn't a reason for saying no. If CP wants to take the risk we shouldn't say no to protect his reputation.
But is being a legend enough. If we had taken Dougie Freedman (equally experienced coach, No.2, international player, hard working and committed) would we be happy? Palace fans are as he is their "legend" but no one on here is saying "we should have got Freedman" or "he'd have done a job for us".
None of us have interviewed him for the job. We don't know what his plans would be and how well they are thought out. We don't know what he would be like as a boss rather than a coach or how tactically aware he is. And before you say "well, at least he wouldn't have the team punting long balls" Chris punted plenty of long balls out of defence in his time. He was a lot more than that but then he was a Premier league standard player.
Put yourself in Slater's shoes and assume he's interviewed CP. Seems keen, ticks most of the boxes other than proven managerial record, PV and RM say he's a great guy and a fans favourite. But can he deliver what the investors want and can he do it this season? How silly does Slater look if Powell fails?
We might not blame Powelly if it goes wrong but there will sure be some who will blame Slater and the board. "cheap option/went for the popular man not experience/Threw him in at the deep end".
And as people have already said just this rumour has queered the pitch for any other manager (bar Curbs and maybe not even him) who now comes in. How disappointed will some people be with a Tisdale or Johnson now because no matter how good their CVs they will never be Chris Powell.
But the message to Mr. Slater is clear, if you want bums on seats, if you want the 12th man back at the Valley, don't care how you work it, one way or another you need to bring Chrissy home.
[cite]Posted By: Southendaddick[/cite]If true, smacks of trying to keep the fans happy while not really getting the best man for the job.
But it's impossible to say for sure who the best man for the job is. There are no guarantees when getting a new manager. And Sir Chris is an excellent excellent man.

Agree. It's very easy to write a dissertation on why anyone is a risk, even the experienced managers.
Probably as important is that the new manager's view of the future matches that of those appointing him. All other things being equal bums on seats could be an important deciding factor. Whatever you thought of Parky he could never be described as an inspirational character which always left him swimming against the tide.

I personally don't think its a bad thing to try and keep the fans happy, bearing in mind how the last few years have been I think we deserve to be made happy.
[cite]Posted By: ValleyGary[/cite]gonna have a few quid on Johnson if he's still 3/1....will ease the blow if sir chris doesnt get it
Which might be why someone stuck a ton on Powell. Move the odds on Johnson and cash in. Who knows?
Betting odds are the worst predictor of managerial outcomes bar astrology : - )
I think who ever it is there is a risk. If it's not Tisdale or Curbs then I'd go with Powell.
In fact, right now my heart tells me to go with Powell in front of the other two. We've got some cash, we're going forward by going back to our roots. Build from within with people who understand the Club, steady progress on and off the pitch year on year.

I'm signing this pledge.

Powell in 5 years maybe but not now, we need experience.

Its gonna be Johnson aint it
Very true. Burley was experienced, so were Johnson and Laws.
But many managers only ever get one league management role. They are deemed to have failed by their boards and never get back into the game.
I'm torn. Not an easy decision to make regardless of whether Powell is in the frame.
Yes..... Yes it will be :-(
