Head says are our fans too fickle? Goonerhater was the only poster to mention Kinsella (another legend) when Parky & Co got sacked. I'd hate Chris Powell is a c*** to echo from the Covered End as happened with Parky.

It is a worry. In the end it will be down to him if they offer him the job. Risky maybe but there are risks with any appointment. He will have perhaps a few more brownie points than Parky ever had.

If I was them, in the absence of a big name prepared to drop down, like Hodgson or Curbs, I'd go for him.
  • Risky I would say. A legend as a player and a very popular coach at Leicester but neither of these 2 means he would make a good Manager. Not proven at that level and I would hate to see the crowd turning on him and attendances dwindling again if he just didn't work out. We've just had too much of that over the past 4 or 5 years. Like I said, risky. Are we really prepared to take that risk? I don't feel comfortable with it. Now, if he came in as coach alongside, say, Johnson, now that would be different.
  • Why would Leicester let him talk to us, if the wouldn't let him talk to The Geordies?
  • I can't think of anyone [we can get] who I'd prefer

I would've been a bit disappointed by Johnson anyway, but will be doubly disappointed now that I've got it in my head that it could be the talented Mr Powell

Len, Bing, Rob - you all make a similar point about not wanting to see our fans turn on him.

But any love affair that is then consummated as a marriage runs that risk. You might stay happily married for 36 years (like me). It might end in divorce after 18 months (like my kid brother). The marriage might produce beautiful children. It might be barren.

But if you think you've found the right person and you don't pop the question and put that ring on their finger, you will go through the rest of your life wondering 'what if...'

We've just had a marriage of convenience with Parkinson. That didn't work. Why not now go for a marriage of passion?

I'd add Chris Hughtons name to the list of managers who were successful in their first job. He did a fantastic job at Newcastle(dickheads for the way they treated him), & really got the respect of his players. I think Chris Powell would give off & receive a very similar feeling.

Brendan Rodgers is another. Though he didn't have too great a time at Reading, he did well at Watford & he seems to have got back on track at Swansea.
Any manager, whoever & however experienced, is a gamble. I really think it comes down to aspects of luck & fate smiling on a situation.

Parkinson was always on a hiding to nothing as boss here. Tainted by the reign of Pardew, & taking the chalice that had been poisoned since Curbishleys exit, he was never gonna get that wholehearted backing that someone like Powell would. Even Pardew got a conquering hero style reception, when he returned as manager, though he wasn't really a CAFC legend.

I think Chris would get the place 'rocking' again, & that can only help inspire the players, who to be honest, don't really seem to like playing at home a whole lot. People would need to be patient, but if anyone could inspire a resurgence at this club, It'd be Sir Chris Powell!

As for the Leicester bell-end saying we are a shit club, it's probably that he got banned from The Valley accentuating said knobishness. I do agree that we have have some shitty fans though, & I'd hope that if Chris were to come here, that they would keep their traps shut & let him get on with the job.

& for the Leicester fans saying that if he were coming to us, it would be on loan, sorry, but he is on loan to YOU from US! :-)

Get your arse back here Chris, you know it makes sense!
  • oddschecker dont show the new manager market anymore! Maybe its a done deal :P
  • SUPER SUPER CHRIS
  • Just got in from work, shite night to be honest and was feeling 'down', logged onto here got myself a cheese and pickle sandwich and a glass of Merlot........saw this thread and WOW am I feeling a whole lot better now!! Sir Chris could become our next manager......get in there!!
My opinion is (for what its worth) why not take him on.....great affection from the fans, played at the highest level, been learning his trade from Sven and loves CAFC.
Ok its his first appointment in a managerial role.....so what...the guy obviousy has something and he will defo get the respect of the players. I live in the Lecestershire area and its true that Foxes fans think he is also a legend, and an excellent first team coach.

I would however add that I would like to see an 'experienced hand' (DOF) helping and nurturing him, my dream 'ticket' would be Curbs and Powell, with Robson or Matthews as coach(es).

Come on down Chris "Into the Valley".........a great, expectant but passionate fanbase await your return!!

Ok off to bed now its 2am!! Time to dream........."Chrissy Powells Red and white army....zzzzz"

Same here Red, feel much happier now and it all seems to make sense, Slater and Varney were gutted seeing the crowd leaving in their droves against Swindon

Who would put more bums on seats, Gary Johnson or Sir Chris?

And I feel the time is right for us and him, nobody else out there jumps to the head of the queue in my mind

    Please be true!

  • No disrespect to Howe but Powells been around a bit.
During that time he's worked with some great coaches/managers. Ericssonn apart ;-) Youve got the likes of Curbs,Jim Smith and Barry Fry ;-).
Really think that will stand him in good stead.

    Come home Powelly.
  • The prospect of Powell has excited more people on this board than any other.

Promotion is important, as is bums on seats. The appointment of Powell may be the tonic required (at least initially) to re-stimulate interest in those fans who have, let's say, lapsed a bit .

OK, I won't be jumping on a plane to get to his first match in charge but it would certainly help the club getting back some of its lost identity.

It could go tits up, it probably won't happen but I am for it.

An absolute hero. My favourite player of all time. Met him when I was 9 years old in the superstore before he made his debut and said it was the best move he'd ever made. The nicest and most genuine footballer I've ever spoken to and I will give him my full backing if he gets the job. Come home Sir Chris!!!
  • He's coming home, he's coming home, he's coming
    Chrissy's coming home
He's coming home, he's coming home, he's coming
    Chrissy's coming home
    He's coming home

    One sword on the shirt
    Covered end still screaming
    4 seasons of hurt
    Never stopped believing

I'll get my coat. And my keys.
  • I think possibly the greatest precedent for a former hero player returning to rescue his old club from the doldrums is Keegan at Newcastle in 1992 - he had been out of the game for 8 years but through sheer charisma, role model inspiration & a tidal wave of Geordie emotion he had them promoted as Champions within 15 months & onto a glorious spell in the Premier League. Now I am not suggesting that Chris Powell can do the same or even have quite the same emotional impact, but if Keegan can do it, surely CP has to be there or thereabouts in terms of potential.

Yes I know it's a gamble, yes I know it could backfire, but it's a throw of the dice I would love to see & with an experienced head behind him ( a Keith Peacock or even Jim Smith type character to whisper in his ear) - who knows.

His appointment would be a sensible one for the board - appoint a Johnson or a Scott & it goes tits up between now & May & the fans will be throwing hissy fits at them, appoint Powell & it goes wrong, they can make a good case for giving him another season to establish himself & I think most fans would understand.
  • I wasnt sure at first , but reading this and the marriage of PASSION quote.. f*** it IM in!!!!!!!

Same wavelength mate... I was just thinking about Keegan...

All the best thinking is done when "the clique" are in bed eh Mascot?!
  • His integrity , professionalism and mutual respect of everything Charlton makes him prime contender in my eyes.

  • Gary Johnson out
  • With that change in the Market there's probably been some contact of some kind. But do you reckon he would come here as number 2 to someone more experienced like Johnson? And groom him for the big job a la Parky.

I love him and my heart syas yes but:

He has after all only been a full time coach this season, and only been working with Sven for 2 months or so. Poyet had 3-4 seasons as an assistant before taking the plunge himself after all.

My other worry is that he's too nice. We had that with Parky who, for example, didn't bollock them after Brighton, is it right to go for the same approach again?
  • Yeah, I'll for him. Its only going to be a matter of time before he becomes manager so why not here....
  • Oh what the hell, let's go the whole hog and complete the love in .....

Minty & Reg on the Board
    Curbs - DOF
    Sir Chris - Manager
    KP - Assistant
    Robbo - 1st Team Coach
    Super Clive - Striking Coach
Kins - back as Midfield Coach
    RR - Defensive Coach
    Deano - Goalie Coach
    Hunty - Away Game Coordinator
Benty - Remote New Media (Twitter) Consultant

Now that would rock the place!!
  • Better to go for it (even if it fails) than deeply regret not having gone for it.

Imagine the feeling if we decide against him and he makes a roaring success of his first appointment elsewhere. That would be gutting, what a missed opportunity.

I think most of us agree that any appointment at our level is going to be a risk so, as has been said before, why not make one that is going to inspire the fans. That is very important at this time of 'what's your Charlton breaking point?' threads.

Go on CAFC Board, do it!!
  • It does however raise the whole Kinsella issue for me.
Why not keep him on as many of the Sir Chris issues would have applied to Godsella?
Obviously the tainted by previous regime issue is there, but surely it would have been a better stop gap at least?

    Very disappointed he has gone
  • My Mrs hates football and is near homicidal; from all the constant Addicks chat I have put her through over the last few weeks, but even she is excited by this rumour!!!
  • OMG!!!!

    Please come home Sir Chrissy!

Total heart ruling head but who cares.

But I warn everyone now. The first person I hear booing him in the upper north will get the hiding of their lives. It will make one of Curb_it's headlocks look like a cuddle!!!!!

    I feel all aglow :-D
  • No whisper as of yet

please put me out of my misery

    is this a possibiity
  • Is it me or have all the books been closed on the next incumbent of the hot seat?

I can't find odds anywhere now
