After Dickson had been on trial here for a while at the back end of our Prem days and then signed, Pardew said, "He's our wildcard .... he's not the finished aticle, but has great potential and knows where the back of the net is".
At the beginning of last season, Pardew said he was going to put Dickson out on loan to gain experience at Division 1 level, which he did. Dicko never settled at Crewe, but was an instant hit at Gillingham. When he returned everyone, including the club, had high expectations of him and inconsistantly began to show what he can do, despite his lack of experience. Then he got hurt larking about with Sam and missed the rest of the season.
At the beginning of this season, Dickson won an international cap playing for Ghana and Pardew gave him an extended contract - so people outside and inside the club rated him.
So, despite 'not being able' to hold the ball up, why wasn't he started for say 3 games in a row at a time when Varney was missing sitter after sitter - yet was included in the squad regularly? If parts of his game still need to be improved, why wasn't he put out on loan to Brighton, Southend, Colchester or someone?
Frankly, I don't get it. Evidently everyone at the club knows he's a rough diamond, but if they consider he's not good enough yet, then surely he should have been farmed out again to get playing experience. I feel that's all he needs: games = experience.
and he was offered an extension to his contract mainly because the club feel he could make it with coaching it is just taht Chris needs to play football not just be coached
[cite]Posted By: Ledge[/cite]peronally couldn't give a toss if he can hold the ball up - we've got andy gray to do that - if he banged them in that's all that matters.
Totally agree with that. Why are the club so obsessed with strikers that do everything but score goals.
I'd take a lazy, selfish striker that scores 15-20 a season over a hard worker that chips in with 2 or 3, every time!

Thats what makes me laugh - people say he is too greedy. He's meant to be - thats what goalscorers are like
Defoe never looks up - get the ball - head down and shoot. He didn't turn out too bad
I get the impression that it is more to do with his antics, getting injured at the hotel, stuff on youtube etc, and his unprofessionalism. I'm not saying he does but maybe he's late everyday, doesn't give 100%, is a bad influence etc. We just don't know BUT if Parky and Pardew didn't give him a start when we were desperate for goals maybe they both know something we don't.
My take is that in his first season he did everything asked of him - got match fit and then went on-loan at Crewe and then the Gills, scored loads of goals, came back was on the bench for a few matches but because of injuries to starting players and defenders getting themselves red-carded he didn't get a start. Then he got injured in the incident with Sam. This year Pards and Parky have mostly favoured Gray plus one other - Varney until he fell out of favour and at various times Todorov and Waghorn and feeling that he's slipped back a couple of places at an outfit that isn't giving him a crack he's put a transfer request in ahead of the January window opening.
[cite]Posted By: nth london addick[/cite]Large that may be the most sensible reason why he aint been playing, and if i am honest would be the only reason i can see him not playing.
but feck that he is scoring for fun in the ressies and needs a chance as does Jon Jo
he is not scoring for fun in the ressies. Don't know the stats but barely gets more than a goal in a game. Jonjo scored three times last night against Lewes reserves, Dicko got one. Don't want to hark back to Pards but he said at NWK meeting that Dicko should be banging them in left, right and centre in the reserves and really knocking on the door of the first team. Unforunately he hasn't been doing that.
[cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]a goal a game at any level is good!
if Dicko scored a goal a game in the championship we'd have scored a further 23 goals - saving ourselves from some draws and losses.
(Unlikely I know but still)
is it a goal a game ? I didn't say it was. I said he never scores more than a goal in any one game. If I could be bothered I'd check out his reserves stats but I can't be.
For me he's got to at least be on the bench. I'm happy with Gray if not Burton with Waghorn. Todorov on the bench as he just hasn't got the fitness, and Dickson. Both give us something completely different depending on how the game is going. Dickson will go out to score, have plenty of shots and give us some pace. Todorov can help us keep the ball and create chances.
Though I think Gray and Burton will always be in the 16.
As someone said we've got a problem next season if we let Dickson go, Waghorn goes back, and we release Todorov. We might not even have Burton either. If we go down we'll probably have to let Gray go to cut the wage bill.
I'd hate for us to be in League One with Dickson scoring regularly for another League One club.
Have him in the 16 just for that goalscoring instinct and start him in the FA Cup match.

What's on YouTube? Is it more than just the videos of him being 'the next big thing'? I know there's a couple of those on there.
Didn't realise you had to score a goal in every game at reserve level in order to get a starting place in the first team Large! Not really our general policy towards the other strikers is it!?
Lets not forget that it's only one management team that have had a look at Dickson. A management team that left us at the bottom of the championship. And the idea of a player being left out who really shouldn't be is not a far-fetched one in football. Mills couldn't get anywhere near the side at Norwich. Went on to play every minute of an England world cup campaign.

He may of only scored one but he was playing as a lone striker so he also has to hold the ball up as well and let the midfielders get in.
Shelvey may have got a hat-trick but accoding to the OS, of those 3, 1 was set up by Dickson and another was a rebound from a Dickson shot.

Clearly the bloke has a very impressive scoring record at every level he's played football.
And there's only one way to find out if he could continue that record at a higher level than thus far - and that's by giving him a chance (ie at least 2 or 3 games where he starts or gets at least 30 mins off the bench)
As Barn Door Varns pointed out, he's being played as the LONE striker in a 4-5-1.
And scoring freely himself, and regularly setting up chances/goals for others.
It might only be reserve level - but to me, it sounds as if his all-round game is coming on a bundle.
Watch him score for fun at League level once we've sold him.
Dickson has netted 22 goals in 21 starts for the Reserves and his loan Clubs.
Don't know Varney's goalscoring record for the Res (suspect that he didn't play many for them as he was rarely out of the first team) but his record in the Championship and League 1 is:
Championship - 11 goals in 43 starts and 18 subs (1 in 4)
League 1 - 27 goals in 68 starts and 27 subs (2 in 5)
One cost £2,000,000 and has been given more than ample opportunity to prove himself whereas the other cost £35,000 and hasn't been given a single start.
I just hope that Parky is being honest when he says "we have a busy Christmas schedule and Chris could be involved at some point, and he may be the one to come on and make an important impact for us" as this may well be his one and only chance to prove himself at the Club.

Yeah we've heard similar comments from Pardew about a lot of the fringe players (and Scott Sinclair), then he didn't give them a proper chance.
It will be a decision we will regret. He may not have a first touch and he may not be a "team man" - but I'd rather him than any of the other strikers we curently have. Anyone who knows where the onion bag is does it for me everytime.
lets stick Grey & toddy is the ressis for 6 months and see if they get a goal a game - bet they dont.

Parky has said up until Jan he will play a part hopefully he will bang a couple in and Parky will change his mind or the rpice will shoot up
Anyone remember?

They are all i have seen or even heard about!
Well the resounding message is:
DICKSON IS WORTH A TRY AT LEAST
Dickson, Reserves:
10 goals in 8 starts including a friendly game (I included this because does it really make a difference at reserve level?)
For the nitpickers, it's 7 goals in 7 games in the reserves league.
So yes, it is a goal a game, if not more. This year he has only featured in one reserve game that he hasn't scored in.
And there's only one way to find out if he could continue that record at a higher level than thus far - and that's by giving him a chance (ie at least 2 or 3 games where he starts or gets at least 30 mins off the bench)

So he might only get one bite of the cherry ....."Chris, we're losing 1-0. You've got 10 minutes to save your Charlton career".
Dicko: "Cheers, boss. How long?"
Parky: "10 minutes, Chris. That's 600 seconds. Or else".
It's a great opportunity for the lad. Will he take it ....?
