Waghorn signs

  • We've scored 5 goals in our last 3 games and conceeded 8.

The signing of an 18 yearold striker yet to score a pro goal is surprising, dare i say utterly bloody bonkers. I'm sure it's all part of the Pardew masterplan (the 3 year one)

I also agree the side has been showing signs of improvement in the past couple of weeks, are more loans right for us now?
  • If one could observe this objectively rather than from behind finger-nails bitten down to the quick,it is quite exciting.

Waghorn is around (initially, at least) for six matches - during which time Mr Pardew's fate will surely be decided, one way or another.

    It's a great headline :

MANAGER PUTS FATE IN HANDS OF 18 YEAR OLD ROOKIE WITHOUT A LEAGUE GOAL

I should have been a journalist - ha ha !
  • He looked pretty sharp in last seasons Fa Cup tie....very robust and mobile, however I just find this bizzare....no doubt Waghorn will be a great player one day, but we need battle hardened veterans to get us out of this slump surely?
  • "I'll bring energy and I'll work hard for the team. I love scoring goals and I like running at defenders."

None of that here young man.

Could be a master stroke, could be a disaster. Sounds like Pardew taking a punt on a good prospect which may or may not come off. Would like to see some more experience come in but not going to go OTT either way about this until he's played a few games.
  • He's been taking punts ever since he arrived and very little have come off.To do it now while he is staring the sack in the face is very brave or very stupid.

I know which one i think it is.
  • [cite]Posted By: Rothko[/cite]You have to have a look, and in the big scheme of things we'll make a profit on both Fleetwood and Dickson.

I remember when everyone was dough eyed about Paul Gorman, in the same way as they are now about Chris

I remember him,i used chat to him at New Eltham station when he was on his way home, nice bloke

I agree to a certain extent but that is what he has always done. When he was still in his very extendied honeymoon period it was seen as being adventurous, playing the market well and a refreshing change from Curb's over cautious approach.

And yet people are shouting for those other punts such as Dickson, Fleetwood, McLeod to be given a run in the side and some are convinced Dickson is the answer to our problems.

I'd never heard of the kid, he sounds like a prospect. Not happy that he MAY be unfit but otherwise it could be interesting and may even give the other strikers a kick up the 'arris. For a months money we can have a look and all being well extend the loan. If he's not the answer then we can ship him out.

pards will know after 15-20 mins if he's ready for this level.

That's why I said it's a great headline for a journalist. The manager is drinking in the last chance saloon (to keep the journalisitc cliches flowing). And he decides it's time to take a punt on a totally unproven striker who has NEVER SCORED A LEAGUE GOAL !!!

Whatever else I have said about him, I have a sneaking regard for that kind of outrageously bucaneering spirit. It's not football - it's pure rock'n'roll !!!

  • When people quote how we will make a profit on players, how much do we make when we take into account the wages paid to them.

I find that hard to believe - he continued to play Halford and he's never ready for thsi level LOL
  • I'm stunned by this to be honest.
  • I don't know the lad but if he turns out to be a nugget of a player then great. What is worrying is that we have

    1. Varney - hard working but currently can't hit a cows arse with a banjo
    2. Gray - personal problems (not his fault of course)
    3. Tody - Not really match fit (probably can't do two matches a week)
    4. McLeod - No evidence based on last season that he's good enough at this level (Just come back from major injury - not match fit and may have to go out on loan to get fit)
    5. Dickson - not shown much at this level (and is possibly injured)
    6. Fleetwood - no track record at this level (currently out on loan)

I suppose Bouazza could play as a striker but essentially the cupboard is pretty bare.

Now Pards is bringing in a player who maybe has great potential but is not a regular for the Mackems. It's a little worrying.
  • I've changed my mind on this and half of you sound like Pardew disciples of spin.

it's a crap signing simple as that - he's hardly given McLeod or dickson a chance in the 1st team and then goes and gets another UNTRIED striker just cos he plays for a Premier League club, and a 2 bob one at that.

how much pressure is now on this lads shoulders for crying out most of you have put him up on a pedestal and when he doesn't deliver the goals we crave, and he won't because we are not the most creative at the moment are , what you all going to do then.

Shoot me down please I hope I am wrong and hope Waggy mark 2 shuts me up big time - but deep down I don't think he will.

    UP THE ADDICKS.

Should i top myself now or later....no i'm gonna shut my eyes..la la la i can't hear you
  • you miserable old sod
  • ledge snap mate here

terrible decision to sign this lad even if he was to turnout to be the new rooney, it is unfair on the current squad and fans to sign an unproven youth who wants to learn his trade

an absolute crock of shite signing and that is not based on my opions of the lad as a footballer but based on what we need right now

  • Don't matter who plays up there if you don't get the ball to the centre forwards they don't stand much chance of scoring
  • Desperate times obviously call for desperate measures.

How can we qualify for an 'emergency loan' when we've got two forwards who can't get in the team playing for the reserves tonight, and another already out on loan?!

In the end, if Waghorn plays and scores a few goals while he is here, and so helps us pick up a few points along the way, then it will have been worth it.

Don't think it reflects well on our approach to signing players though, and probably tells McLeod, Fleetwood and Dickson that their futures lie elsewhere.
  • Reading between the lines i think this move could be the final nail in Pardews coffin, hence why a months loan and not three months, is this the board telling him you have until christmas and if we are still in the same position or we havent got x amount of points then its see ya later mate.

Going to stick my head on the block here. I reckon Pardew will be gone by this time next week.
  • Was easily the best player on the park last season in the Youth cup, and was simply the difference between us going through and going out. I can see all the arguments on here that he has never scored at league level but at his age has barley had a chance yet, and you would think he would be busting a gut with us to show Keane what he can do.

That said Pardews record on signing strikers just keeps getting odder. Off the top of my head he has bought the following:-

    • Dickson – At £35K no more than a punt so no issues with what he has done here.
    • Varney – Paid £2m for a less than a prolific goal scorer from Crewe
    • Big Chris – Plays him for an entire season in which he looked good for the first half, then once Reid went never looked the same.
    • Toddy – Very unlucky with injuries but now seems to be on the bench for a 10/15 minute cameo if lucky. He is either fit or he is not.
    • McLeod – Paid over the odds and further away from starting than ever
    • Gray – Meant to be the man to take us up, but still not a certain starter 10 month on.
    • Lita – Loan signing and did no more than OK
    • Fleetwood – With so little money to spend in the summer, Pardew thought it wise to spend £100K+ on a striker from the 5th league, and before November is out will have played for two other clubs and not us.

So including Waghorn Pardew has signed 9 strikers, played another 4 in the two Bents, JFH and Lisbie, not to mention the likes of ZZ, Ambrose and Bouazza in floating strikers’ role. I for one hope he knows what he is doing because at the moment he is doing a very good impression of a Manager with a load of stickers in his office and throw then in the air to see who he will sign next.

    Lol!.

It normally falls to me to try and lift the spirits by my own personal brand of rose-tinted spectacle optimism. Hey look, Lloyd Sam could play up front - not after Saturday. Err ZZ could be tops - oh he's still injured and probably gone in January......... I've got it, now with all the Pompey owned defensive cover available why not Jon Fortune up there? He's been thrown up there before, the goal that sent Palarse down, he's a big target........
  • Can't believe we've unloaded Ambrose for a player who hasn't played 90mins in his career as an attempt to improve things. What's the point of continually brining in Premier teams youngsters on short term loans? Pardew said he'd learnt his lesson over loan signings after last season - well what lesson did he learn exactly?

I'd rather see Fleetwood recalled and given a chance, at least we'll find out if he can cut it or not in the championship.

Alan Pardew - I'd rather have Alan Partridge in charge, although sometimes I think we already have

It does seem somewhat odd but maybe Ambrose's heart just wasn't in it towards the end? It was pretty well known that he wanted off in January.
  • I can't believe there's so many comments slating this as a bad signing, when he's not even played a single minute for us yet. It's almost like you're determined to be miserable, no matter what happens.
  • "Can't believe we've unloaded Ambrose for a player who hasn't played 90mins in his career as an attempt to improve things."

And what exactly has Ambrose contributed?

That aside I'm more interested to see who the other signing is.

    If there is one.
