Waghorn signs

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
According to the Kent Messenger Martyn Waghorn has signed on a one month loan

Charlton have made Sunderland striker Martyn Waghorn the first of what they hope will be two loan signings to bolster the squad ahead of Saturday's home game against Sheffield United.

Waghorn, 18, arrived at the club on a month's loan that will take him up to December 15.

He is no stranger to The Valley having played for Sunderland against Charlton in last season's FA Youth Cup quarter-final.

The South Shields youngster made his Premier League debut for Sunderland against Manchester United in December.

A pacy forward, he was awarded a two-and-half-year contract in February.

Charlton, who have three players on loan in Hameur Bouazza, Linvoy Primus and Martin Cranie, are allowed to take eight on loan _ four over 23 and four under 23.

  • Hmmm. I'm not really too sure what to say about that.
  • Totally underwhelming, IMHO. This signing doesn't lift me whatsoever.
  • I've got my bingo card ready for this thread
  • he is quite good!
  • Struggling to see what he can bring to the table that Dickson/Fleetwood/McCleod can't. He's at the same stage of his career as Wagstaff.
  • I've heard he's a decent player, and we've had enough 'big names' fail on us in the last couple of years, so i'm happy enough with this signing.
  • Lol, that has cracked me up. Everyone was expecting an Arsenal or Man Utd youngester, David Healy or someone with Prem experience and we get Martyn Waghorn!

To be fair though I've seen him a couple of times and he looks a bit handy!
  • [cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]he is quite good!

The best striker you've never heard of.
  • For the Glass half Fulls (You know who you are) - Good signing, will get us 25 goals and we should just about sneak top 2

Glass half empties (You know who you are) - Who the fook is he, some Sunderland cast off, never heard of him, we're doomed

And for the rest of us - Dont know him, but he might be ok, cant be much worse than what we've got so lets get behind him.

No more posts needed on this thread :)

Was one of the players to stand out in the Sunderland Youth Cup game last year.

Whether he's good enough for the championship, I have no idea.
  • never heard of him but if Keano thinks he's worth a 2 year contract he must be a decent player so why not give him a go.
  • He played for Sunderland at Stamford Bridge this season looked ok from what i can remeber, what does worry me though is he any better than what we already have, and i am sure i that Pardew stated he was signing two experienced players, since when has an 18 year old became an experienced player, and if thy are why dont we play JJ on a regular basis
  • The thing is, if he was our player he'd be out on loan to 'get him games'. Good luck.
  • I'm sure Pardew knows what he's doing.

JJ has just signed for Hibernian!

    Oh the other one!
  • I wonder if Pardew will send him out on loan - you know, to get a bit of first team experience....;)

Only joshing - at least we've made a move to freshen things up.

He can't be on of the 'wait and see what the Carling Cup draw brings' players as Sunderland are out.....*ponders a moment*
  • hmmmmmm

    fooking greeat :-(
  • I was thinking more along the lines of Jonjo Shelvey,
  • My issue is not with Waghorn it's with Pardew's philosophy. I'm absolutely convinced that if Waghorn was ours he'd be out on loan. If Fleetwood had signed for Sunderland in the summer, we'd probablyt be signing him on loan now. I know that's hypothetical but why the feck hasn't Fleetwood been given a go. None of it makes sense.

  • Cant believe he would be our first choice, smacks of desperation, we have to sign someone, oh he will do........
  • Mmmm....little bit of a risk I'd have thought....doesn't have much experience (if any), does he?
Don't we have one or two aspiring 18 year old strikers that are as good as (or there abouts), as him....I'd have thought so?
If we have, I don't think they'll be too enamoured with this.
  • Martyn Who? Perhaps but The Sub- Standard said the same about Chris Powell.

Murray is reported to have said that none of the loans would be household names so not surprised. No it hasn't given me a huge lift VM but maybe it will the team and the fans when they and we have seen him play.

I personally wouldn't be bothered if we didn't sign anyone.

The team has been virtually the same for two games now and while we've only collected one point, the performances have been much much better.

IMHO loan signings will only muddle the 'who should play up front/midfield/defence' debate and lead to more chopping and changing by the manager.

An extra central defender would be good as backup but why change the team AGAIN by bringing in ANOTHER loan signing?
  • I tell thee what, if this is true this is a load of bullshit.

Waghorn has been out most of the season ith a serious knee injury only returning to reserve action two weeks ago when he played 60 minutes.
  • I know nothing of the lad, but give the lad, the management and the board a break a minute.
They are not getting rid of Pardew for the moment so lets hope the youngster brings some much needed relief and bangs for a few goals in for the measure.
Judge him after a few games for us for he may possess something our strikers currently dont have GOALS
  • On OS now we have signed him for a month with a view to a further two months

Agreed. Could have the same effect as David Whyte did way back when.

Is there a Sunderland forum where we can get a Black Cat's review?
  • young strong in a rooney mould, would imagine very cheap,a gamble yes,but what does that say to McCleod,Dickson and Fleetwood ?
