[cite]Posted By: Glass half empty[/cite]How did the people who went to the specialist running shop get on? worth a trip? weird watching a video of yourself running?
Did mine about a year ago, but doubt it's changed. You dont actually watch yourself, just your feet and ankles really... They're looking at how your foot hits the ground... pronate etc etc...
I went to Runners Need near L'pool St last week, and was probably the best service i've ever had in a shop.
Watched how i walk, tried a couple of different pairs for sizing, checked the wear on my own trainers to see where i was putting most pressure on, tried on three pairs, and filmed with all three. They look at how your heel lands and whether you put any pressure to the side on impact.
The Nike's i got were £80, and even when i made it clear i was pleased with them, he got me to try out a couple of cheaper pairs to make sure i got the right one.
Same experience as AFKA. Tried on at least 3 pairs until they found the right ones... Saucony in the end, think they were £65. Easily the most comfortable and cushoning shoes I've ever had.
I used the one in Canary Wharf, so sounds like the service is excellent across the different branches...
Just finished my first 8 miler without the Dog this evening & managed to go round in 63 minutes which is probably the fastest I have done mins per mile at any distance so far & seven minutes quicker than with the dog on Monday! Well pleased but aches & pains have already started, next run not till Sunday me thinks! :-)
I've just done 2 miles. Heels, calves and knees were hurting after about 0.2 miles.
Haven't got passed the 2 mile mark yet, but know that my problems are largely psychological. Lost a mate a couple of years ago who had a heart attack when out jogging so i've got a bit of a fear of pushing myself at the moment. Just plays on my mind a bit, and i keep getting the feeling mid run that i'm not going to complete my route without stopping.
I know it will come with time though, just got to put the work in.

Well done AFKA keep it going, you know want to, I know what you mean about the mate, me and Luva Luva played golf with a guy who at just 51 had heart attack that took his life (I will be 51 this year) he was a big guy but still young. That, Darren`s passing as well other Charlton Fans who left us at such an early age makes me feel so humble and grateful for what I have, that is making me more determined to at least finish this run (reluctant to call it a race) and not use the age thing as an excuse to become a slob. : (

Doing great lads, keep on going. As you say TCE its a run and not a race. i am actulay looking forward to running with some like minded people and not charging round the course to get a good time.
Ketters you are doing great too best mate, is it true that you can ONLY run with the dog and have therefore officialy entered as a blind runner?
Having done the London Marathon in 1986 (3 1/2 hrs) God I was fit then, 16 weeks in training.
My advice is:
Run every other day, if you run 10 miles and over take two days rest.
Always know where you are running, run the cousre before hand ( or parts of it), so that in your mind's eye, you how far you've gone and what distance is left to do. There is nothing worse than not knowing, and can have a big effect on how you run.
I would always end any run with with a sprint, then take a big breath and hold it as long as possible. This way you body gets to use every bit of oxyen you have.
Just returned from my run, the two walks I do at the end are becoming shorter, the first being half way up john wilson st to the lights the last being the last hundred and fifty yards to home are absolute killers, but I`m getting there and it taking me around the hour mark, I`ve shifted a few pounds as well, weight is now 13st 12lbs, I`m now averaging about 15miles a week, so based on my working out I should finish the run the sunday after the run starts!! ; (

Anyone know if there's one of these in docklands?
Yep, there's two. Jogshop is over in Harbour Exchange, just down from the Spinnaker. Runners Need is under the Barclays tower... Churchill Place I think it's called

Went to the gym last night then ran home (about 1.5 miles) My calves were f'kin killing me, I struggled to even get up the stairs for a bath!
I have just completed my sunday run, today I decided to find a reasonably flat run and push until felt that was my lot, (not quite dying, but border line completly fecked) I managed 6 miles! I think I could of gone a little futher had I not had to step up the pace (for security reasons !!) thorough Woolwich and Plumstead high streets, the only trouble living on Shootershill and looking for somewhere flat to run I found myself 2 miles from home so I had a two mile walk home so I had actually covered 8 miles but I got there, this week I have run a total of 22 miles over 4 sessions.
TCE, keep up the updates mate, really enjoy reading them.
I stretched my longest run yesterday to 3m with a 200yd walk in the middle, but needed to do something of breaking my comfort distance.
Went back tonight to my favourite 2-mile route with the intention of seeing if i could up the pace a little, and was pleased to take 3 minutes off the time i was doing last week, so pleased with that.
Hardest thing i'm finding at the moment is stopping sweating, even after a stone-cold shower....
First real Failure for me last night, went out intending to do 8 miles which was probably not the best idea as it was still 26C last night at 6.30pm, only managed 6 miles due to what I can only assume was dehydration. Complete loss of Leg Co-ordination & Energy, I will not be running without a water bottle again after last night :-(
My latest update: following my sunday jaunt thorough the pretty high streets of Woolwich and Plumstead covering a total of some 8 miles including a 2 and bit mile walk, today I ventured back to the run I normally do, in short down the hill across the common, down past The Valley, along the lower road to the ferry, up John Wilson street, past the barracks AND BACK UP THE HILL, well folks, I done it, the whole shooting match, non stop, 62 minutes door to door according to my official timekeeper (the Wife) 5.23 miles. I am chuffed to fecking bits although a little sore.
Many thanks AFKA, that last bit up the hill was an absolute killer, I think I have learnt in the last few runs how to slow down and run to a pace suitable to the sort of distance I hope to achieve, has the course actually been announced yet?

Well worth it IMO.
i do feel a spring in the step now with these.

Would thoroughly recommend it.

Dave M, have you started going to Sidcup now mate
Yes mate. I'm still playing footie on Sun & Wed so try to fit the gym in as and when I can.
I might have to give up the Wednesday game and start training properly for October (you never know, I might even get a bit slimmer!)
Tuesday next week would be good for me.

Quite a few keeping quiet though, will be interested to know how they're coming on.
