    www.mapmyrun.com

am tempted to join this event, is it still open, is there a page somewhere? I fancy doing a/the big one next year

I use it but it does (so I have been told) underestimate distance a little bit, especially if you are running up/downhill
  • yeah seemed a little short when I tried my bike route..
  • Suze I can highly recommend a run round sutcliffe park now it has been turned into that nature area thingy . Been running round it during the day whilst working nights.
Run round it with Lou for extra comedy fun
  • Just completed my first 2 mile run, down the hill across the common, cemetery lane, down Charlton lane, past the Valley, turn right along woolwich managed to get to the White Horse without stopping, from there I walked/jogged along to john wilson street past the barracks, back up the hill and home in just under an hour, not up to Mr Ketman standards but I`m trying hard for this one, my weight in already down from 14st 6oz to 13st 12oz.

:UPDATE: after a 07.30 sunday morning run, I managed to reach The Castle pub in John Wilson street without stopping, a steady walk up the hill to the common, then continue to run home.
anyone know, how I can find out exactly how far that is, obviously I`ve tried clocking it in the car, but in the car you have to diviate slightly from the running route.

Many thanks GA, if its accurate, I`m doing about 5ish miles already, I`m well pleased with that.
  • Registered to run but have not been running for three months due to sciatica a real pain in the 'arris coupled with a numb leg below the knee. Managed to go for a 3 mile walk today for the first time in ages, physio is helping hope to be back running at end of June should be sufficient time to get back into my stride again

Lats, can't you help yourself to a bit of top notch pain relief?!

  • I'm struggling big time.

managed to heave my way around for about 20 mins this morning. And drove it afterwards to find it was 2.0 miles. That was the max i could possibly do at the moment and the thought that i'm going to have to get myself into a position in four months time of repeating that route 7 times scares the bejesus out of me.

I'm going to give it everything i've got, but a really can't see any light at the end of the tunnel at this stage.
  • Im finding it hard too, can get round 3 miles reasonibly well but not a step further!!
Time for some motivational group runs me thinks, anyone else up for it?
  • definately. I havent' been to the gym for 2 weeks since my half marathon walk!
walking that and the effort it was has seriously made me rethink this! got my gym stuff tonight, and am going to go swimming at eltham tomorrow night, but seriously, i just think i hate outdoor running. i'll do any other excercise except it!
buckshee, are you and Lou going out running any evening this week? i could drive to you and come with you?
  • had an eventful run myself yesterday. about 8miles but had to stop at one point to do what bears do in the woods (although in my case in was some bushes by the side of the A2) then cut my hand on some railings.

for those of you struggling, the aim is to look at slow increments, add 5-10 minutes a week to the longest run and also do not get fixated on distance covered, at this point time on your feet is far more important.

that said to measure distance I use www.mapmyrun.com it is pretty good, but bear in mind these websites will tend to under-measure if your run includes any hills.
  • I have been updating a sheet to monitor times & distances & so far since 4th March I have done 200 miles been going three times a week every week. Tonight will be my first 8 or 9 mile run will see how that goes, think the Dog might be left at home tonight :-)
  • Did 3 miles in 28 mins ish on both sunday and monday. I am up for a meet on Sunday morning if anyones around, bexley, greenwich, charlton, lewisham area (not all of them though:o) )
  • hopefully i'll be at that level in a couple of weeks, so will be a good time to link up then.

Legs still ache from Sunday, but gonna get out tonight.
  • gonna get on the running machine in the gym tonight and see how long i can go for. i know its not outdoor running, but its a good measure. living on a hill has its limits.
  • Took the Dog out in the p*ssing rain last night she had blown her pipe out after 5 miles, dragged her arse round for the remaining 3 miles which definately affected my time of 1 hour 10 mins for the 8 mile course, could have definately gone quicker. Really ache this morning mind, will have tonight off & repeat course Wednesday without the Dog!
  • blimey kets, you're well on course to smash 2hrs.

Although i'm not best placed to give advice, i really think you need to be careful about over-training. You sould as if you are pushing yourself hard five - six times a week, which seems too much.

Most important phase muscle wise is the recovery, and i'd be suprised they will get a chance to recover effectively if you're doing a hard 5-8 miles nearly every day.

Anyone better placed agree / disagree with that ?

We've told him this already, when he's sat there on a Friday night, moaning into his pint..! Day on, day off Kets... doing it solidly for 4 days in a row is only going to result in one thing - injuries. If you really want to go out 4 days in a row, then maybe do 8 miles on day 1, 2 miles day 2, 8 miles day 3 etc... take it easy!
  • training everyday does eventually catch up with you, i would recommend 4/5 days a week. the key thing is allowing recovery time and also ensuring that you only progress gradually.

if working on a time basis then aim to add 5-10 minutes to your longest run each week. if distance the general rule of thumb is do not increase the mileage by more than the number of training sessions you are doing each week (that is if you train three times a week do not add more than 3 miles on your total weekly mileage each week).

I would also recommend varying the training sessions somewhat, add in some shorter faster runs among the long runs.
  • I did a 20 min fitness video last night. can i have tonight off for a rest?
  • I was doing Three consecutive Days a week during the Midweek due to weekend football commitments. Now footy season is over I have decided to up the Distance, but it will be Day on, Day Off basis from now on, in fact I'll probably only go out three times a week from this point forward, one thing I noticed last night, I had three days rest before last night & felt really good all the way round, doubtful that would have been the case if it was 2nd or 3rd consecutive day running that distance.
  • I `ll be out again tonight, doing my my little bit.
  • [cite]Posted By: T.C.E[/cite]I `ll be out again tonight, doing my my little bit.

Tried a different route tonight, made the mistake of going up the hill at start, not a good idea, according to that map thingy I done 5.63 miles, I would suggest that its nearer 5 miles after I walked a bit as well, but I`m still well pleased, but I`m definatly a flat surface/downhill type runner, how could I find out how many times that is round somewhere like Charlton park
  • well done TCE, i saw the rain and thought sod that. Done a bit on the bike instead.

    Thanks AFKA,,
Just used that map thingy to work out, that its 1.11 miles around the football pitches at Charlton park, so I answered my own question, I must admit I never thought I`d enjoy running though, bought myself n95 8 thingy wotsit phones, with loads of music and off I go, then the wife phones me on the hour, and home I go.
