A totally dominant second half performance saw us home to a thoroughly convincing win, with a final scoreline that, quite frankly, flattered Stevenage.
They generally found their men better than us for a chunk of the first half, without creating much in front of goal, save for AMB’s excellent one-on-one save at their forward’s feet when he was clean through. A pivotal moment, easily forgotten in the aftermath of a very comfortable 3 points. After we stopped making a series of unforced passing errors, we created a few half chances in the Stevenage box but it looked as if we were going in all square before some neat combination play saw Coventry pull a low ball across the penalty area for Godden to demonstrate his predatory instincts and maintain his current scoring run.
The early second half goal from Luke Berry infused further confidence into the side and we completely controlled the game thereafter, with Stevenage resigned to their fate. We could easily have had a couple more goals and the fact that our opponents didn’t muster a single shot on target tells its own story. Rarely have a Charlton side looked so composed.
We were sound defensively, moved the ball very well in midfield in the second half and were constantly threatening up top. A bravura all-round performance from Matty Godden and Tyreece Campbell wasn’t that far behind with his pace and trickery. Coventry was the glue that held the side together and, in addition to his goal, Luke Berry had some very good moments. He’s been better recently after a very tepid first half of the season and the presence of Gilbert on the bench can’t do any harm.
An excellent afternoon’s work and one that sets us up beautifully for Tuesday night’s encounter with Peterborough. We certainly owe them (and their garrulous chairman) one.

Been a busy day catching up with little bro' (@jimmymelrose) who is over for today & Tuesday's game. Had a beer after in the fans bar so only just got home.
Surprised that not more has been made about AMB's tactical injury. Match changed after that as before then we were 2nd best. Obvious AMB wasnt injured & a sign / instruction must have come from the dugout telling him.to go down.
Probably best I've seen us play this season. All over the pitch we were winning the individual battles & actually looked like a team for once. Back 4 solid, midfield industrious & tenacious in the tackle & the forward players fast & first to the ball.
Special mention to Godden. Made the first goal by holding it up inside our half before laying it off to TC. Also won the header that set up TC's shot for the 2nd goal. Watch to see how high he jumps. Out jumps Leaburn who is almost a foot taller.
Small will play higher up the pyramid if he can learn to look up & cross better as well as learning to use his right foot.
Only complaint is that we didnt score 3 or 4. Much rather we went for goal than go for the corner flag after 88 mins.
Win tuesday night & we might even give Bruma scare next sat.10 -

We are usually shit in the first half, Jones gives them a team talk/bollocking at half time, and then we are good in the second half. This time we brought the team talk 15 minutes earlier due to an AMB “injury” and it worked the same way. Should do that every week0

Usually when I get up at 5 am to watch an early kickoff I regret it by full time. Not today. It was excellent stuff.
Thought we were pretty dominant first half but struggled to create much. One moment of real quality passing and movement created the opening we needed, though. Once in front we never looked like letting them back in. Clearly some lessons learnt from the Blackpool game. The last 5 or 10 mins was a master class in winding the clock down.
It was overall a very good team performance and no one had a bad game. Small was a bit quieter than we’ve become used to, but that’s about as far as the criticism goes.
On the standouts side, I thought Coventry was flawless, both man marking their danger man out of the game and dictating the tempo for us - plus a rare burst forward to bag an assist for the first goal. Berry was also much more involved than usual, possibly his best game for us and took his goal brilliantly. Godden also played the target man role very well. Not in the conventional physical lump style, where a striker can hold a defender off with brute force, but by nipping in front of his man and playing a number of clever flicks with his feet and head. He’s such an intelligent player and he’s in excellent form. Important we keep getting runners close to and off him so he has targets for those flicks.
We’re bang into this playoff race now. If we can manage 2 more wins in February I might be willing to say we’ll be one of the favourites for a play off berth. What a turnaround that would be in 2.5 months because the season genuinely looked dead not long before Christmas.7 -

Two posts about going for autos have been given the ol' LoL treatment, but, people were also getting scrutinised for sticking their necks out and saying we could get play-offs a few months ago when we were 8 points behind Bolton and Reading, and 5 behind Barnsley. (I was one of the people who thought it was ridiculous to even think about it)
12 games later and we are ahead of Bolton with a superior goal difference, 2 clear of Reading and 4 points clear of Barnsley with a game in hand.
It's getting to a point where we now soon might be discussing the games that cost us autos, instead of narrowly missing out on play-offs.

A good afternoon though I still find these early kick offs disorienting!Met a couple of Dutch tourists in the Fans Bar pre match. First visit for them. “It will be an easy win for Charlton, no?” They suggested. I replied unlikely as we rarely do things the easy way. Then bumped into them at the station afterwards and congratulated them on being correct. Only problem was they missed the first goal by leaving before end of first half to go to loo then stayed drinking their beers and missed the second goal too! Told them they’ll have to come back then to see us score.Also good to catch up with German Addicks, Scottish Addicks and @Er_Be_Ab_Pl_Wo_Wo_ChThe players deserve to enjoy that win bonus.Now how come I’ve had football, beers and curry and it’s not even 7pm yet?!13

Also the player of the year, whoever wins it, will be the most worthy winner of the award since 11/12 season? Or rather it will be the most difficult time to win it.
It feels like most seasons we have had an obvious POTY most times. May, JRS, Dobson, JFC, Phillips, Lyle, JDS, Holmes, recently.
This season and the way things are going, there are arguments for Lloydy, Coventry, Ramsay, Godden, Edwards. If TC and Small work on their finishing they could be in the conversation as well.
Whoever gets top3 will do really well where usually it's a bit of a joke and a clear winner most seasons.19 -

Really very good. I think I might have to now concede that Godden is a good signing. I did always say that I liked him but he was invisible for too many games. Maybe now all the other pieces of the team have fallen into place, he is flourishing. Same with Berry - maybe. Whatever, it does look like the right shape and style is emerging, and for that I guess NJ deserves the credit, and the board for not panicking in November.14

Likely 90 ish points will be required to finish second. For us to do that, we would need over 2.5 points per game, or 3 wins and a draw from every 4 games played between now and the end of the season. Nice to dream but totally unrealistic.8

It is often said, that good sides, have a good 'spine'.
I hope that some of you doubters will recognise that a 'spine' of Jones, Coventry, and Godden are good enough for a League One side. And, possibly, good enough for the Championship.4 -
