I think Jones’ issue at Stoke and Soron was some of the egos of players. The attitudes weren’t right and he didn’t get the respect he felt he was owed. So it was never gonna work

I'd rather we had a team with May in it. But if it's a choice of 'keep the bulk of last year, with May, and add a few signings' versus 'gut the team, including May, start again with a fresh squad with a cohesive and direct style of play, fixing the calamitous defence', I'd have to go with the latter every day of the week and twice on a Sunday. The last 2 seasons have been dire, and to be frank the only player I'd lament losing hasn't played since last year. So long as Jones is true to what he says about getting in better, I'd rather roll the dice. I don't believe we'll get a better striker than May, I do believe we could get a far better attacking unit than we had last year.
We won't sign anyone better than May this window. We don't seem to have any interest in replacing CBT despite letting him go 6 months ago. We really struggled to score last season as it is... Can't wait to watch another mid table battle

Defensively Jones did seem to sort us out but we struggled to attacking wise to win many games and now we're letting go a 20 goal season striker.

It's really not that different - the club made a different decision to keep Hales for longer and got far less money for him than they could have. If the club made an optimal decision back then, they might've got some money for him 1-2 years before it was evident that he was past his best.
Alfie's percentage of shots on target over the last three seasons have steadily declined from 45% in 21/22, to 41% in 22/23, to 36% while with us. His on target shots last season from non-penalty situations amounted to roughly 13 expected goals but he got 17, likely through a combination of luck and bad goalkeeping. There are arguments to be made that Alfie, on the "wrong side" of 30, is already on a decline and the numbers are going to catch up with him at some point.
All that is to say it's still a massive risk and not one I would personally choose to make without a significant fee being received for him.
Yes they could have sold Killer earlier but they didn't because for once they saw his value to the club even though he was obviously going downhill. I think we sold him for a pittance if we got anything at all in the end.

I wanted a manager who was given the freedom to buy and sell the players he wanted to do (obviously within a sensible budget). To build a team and a squad that would not be a push over and be competitive. To get us promoted out of this shit league. We have suffered for so long under owners who knew better than the professionals, sold players over their heads, bought players that they thought were good, and even suggested formations and tactics. Can’t believe we now have so many slagging off a manger who has insisted he be empowered to do just what we wanted. That some think they know better. I have no idea as to how much we will get for May, or even if he is leaving. Im not some sort of fucking stalker - The things I’ve said are out there in various places already but only bits and bobs of it here and there. I’m trying to paint a clearer picture so people can stop spouting shit like “he moved because his wife made him”.
He lived next door to me for almost a year and I only admitted that when the rumours surfaced about him leaving. He was left alone to do his own thing so there were no breaches of trust. Even on the few times we met up socially we didn’t discuss football.at all.
He’s a family man who missed the first few years of his first two sons because he was living away so maybe, just maybe, he wants to be with his family, help them grow up but also he wants to go to work and enjoy it - which we could all see he was not at the end of the season by being subbed.
he gets a move, keeps his family close by, works for an old boss he admires, gets a pay rise and his wife gets more support for their kids. Maybe a player is doing what’s right for his family and himself!
I have no faith in this ownership replacing Alfie, and for me the sale of Alfie would take this window from being an okay one to a poor one. These owners need to do some serious business to convince me we're serious about getting out of this division.

Sounds like definitely going, and while the fee is still only a rumour, £750k is ridiculous considering the amount of goals May scores. Surprised there's actually people here saying it's a decent fee due to age and experience.
Not only weakening our goal threat, but strengthening a side you would expect to be up there for the top 6 places. Im not some sort of fucking stalker - The things I’ve said are out there in various places already but only bits and bobs of it here and there. I’m trying to paint a clearer picture so people can stop spouting shit like “he moved because his wife made him”.
He lived next door to me for almost a year and I only admitted that when the rumours surfaced about him leaving. He was left alone to do his own thing so there were no breaches of trust. Even on the few times we met up socially we didn’t discuss football.at all.
He’s a family man who missed the first few years of his first two sons because he was living away so maybe, just maybe, he wants to be with his family, help them grow up but also he wants to go to work and enjoy it - which we could all see he was not at the end of the season by being subbed.
he gets a move, keeps his family close by, works for an old boss he admires, gets a pay rise and his wife gets more support for their kids. Maybe a player is doing what’s right for his family and himself!
The way I see it is Jones has a plan and May doesn't really fit into that plan. He has said he was under no pressure to sell but there was clearly an issue at the end of last season when May was going for the Golden Boot and not being played. Now I am a great believer in adding up the goals you have in the team and we have taken a lot of goals out of a side that didn't have many in the first place but of course this can be addressed in different areas. We also have talented young players who are a year older and wiser.
It is a case of waiting and seeing. Would I have sold May in our position? Absolutely not, but we have to have faith in Jones and support him in what he is trying to do. The money that gets to him from the deal may indeed help him get the side he wants and we have to hope that side matches what we want.
We won't sign anyone better than May this window. We don't seem to have any interest in replacing CBT despite letting him go 6 months ago. We really struggled to score last season as it is... Can't wait to watch another mid table battle
To be fair, we have no interest in replacing CBT because we’re not playing with wingers any more. If we switch to a lb and lw during the game, it sounds like Small and Edwards can play both positions.
You may be right about the mid table battle, but I’m confident based on the players recruited, the better science department and the most qualified manager we’ve had in years that this will be the best season we’ve had in a while.
We lost JRS after the 22/23 season, didnt replace him / his goals and finished lower in 23/24.
We've lost CBT in 23/24, haven't replaced him /his goals (because we dont now play with wingers ?) and..........
We lost 11 games before CBT left
We only lost 3 games after CBT left. Sounds like we were better off without him.
I’m of course being deliberately provocative there but the point I’m making is that we didn’t need a like for like replacement because he wouldn’t have fit the system the manager wanted to play. Instead they brought in Thierry Small who was far more effective at being a wing back than CBT was.
But it's the goals we are missing. Losing JRS, then CBT.......and now Alfie

WHERE ARE THE GOALS GOING TO COME FROM.
Jeez......its not rocket science. We've now replaced goal scoring wingers with non-goal scoring wing backs. And now we are going to sell our top goalscorer.
And it’s not like we've signed players who can score the goals that we've lost over the last 18 months. I really do hope there is a plan there somewhere because I cant see it.
I’d love to keep May, I really would, but goals scored are generally an indicator of how good a team is, rather than how good one player is:
In 2018/19 we were promoted.
73 goals for, 40 goals against.
In 2019/20 we were relegated to L1.
50 for, 65 against.
The following season we were 7th.
70 for, 55 against.
Then 13th, 55, 59.
Then 10th, 70, 66. Then last season 16th, 64, 65. It looks clear from those stats that barring 2018/19 we haven’t been anywhere near good enough.
Improve the team, and the goals will come, so long as you don’t have an absolute donkey or donkies up front.
I think that we will improve the team, from what I’ve read here at least.

I don't believe we'll get a better striker than May, I do believe we could get a far better attacking unit than we had last year.
Defensively Jones did seem to sort us out but we struggled to attacking wise to win many games and now we're letting go a 20 goal season striker.
Hopefully I'll be surprised but I'm not getting my hopes up as we approach our 5th year in L1
a few poor decisions . We’re actually being run like a proper football club and that’s what people have been asking for since Roland . Carry on being negative about every little thing sad little man.
Alfie on a decline ? he's just scored the most goals in a season that that he's ever scored in senior football. If our owners were serious about going for promotion they would be doing everything they could to keep him at this football club. Even if we received a significant fee for him who would we be able to bring in to guarantee 20+ goals next season ? No one & sadly this just sums up our club.

We have suffered for so long under owners who knew better than the professionals, sold players over their heads, bought players that they thought were good, and even suggested formations and tactics.
Can’t believe we now have so many slagging off a manger who has insisted he be empowered to do just what we wanted. That some think they know better.
I have no idea as to how much we will get for May, or even if he is leaving. But I do believe in Jones and his commitment to make changes across our Club to make it more competitive and drive it forward.
It is for Jones to decide if May stays or goes. That’s his job.
He is much more qualified to make those decisions as he knows the budget and the choices that need to be made.
I am backing Jones to get it right.

My only question is......would he have been looking to move if he was happier at the club ? ie, that he wasn't been subbed every week & that he was going to be pivotal in the managers plans.
Not only weakening our goal threat, but strengthening a side you would expect to be up there for the top 6 places. If May does go, I don't want to hear from Jones/the club in a few weeks time that we have lost the May replacement as the player has chosen a championship side instead and there's nothing we can do.
