When you are manager, you have a responsibility to do the right thing by your players - most of whom he signed - and your staff at the club, jumping ship on them just a few weeks into the season is really bad.
Villa have money, sure, but they are nowhere near the top six and are not going to get past City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal or United any time soon.
He should have stayed with Rangers until the end of the season and then left, always plenty of jobs available in the PL outside the top six.
Rangers gave him his chance and he rewarded them by walking out, sorry but that is out of order.
Is it ok to fuck over a club just because they’re not as big a club as Rangers?
What would you suggest is the cut off point? A club like, say, Brighton? Charlton? Dundee United? Ross County? Barnet? Is there a ‘critical mass’?
If you’re making the wider point that managers shouldn’t use clubs as stepping stones, then ok, it’s a valid position. If you’re saying he shouldn’t have bailed mid-season, then also ok, I can see that point, but the size of the club is irrelevant in both of these cases.Being more offended about it because you think the club in question deserves more respect purely because they’re a ‘big club’ is ludicrous to me. Why should Gerrard sacrifice his own ambitions just because Rangers have more supporters than Brechin City?
Its long been recognised that footballers and managers have to be a bit ruthless to make it big in football. We, as fans of a medium size club, reluctantly have to accept that. If ‘big’ clubs like Rangers are off limits to this, it just contributes to the growing gap between the haves and the have nots.
Like you, I have no affinity with Rangers (or Celtic), but all things considered, I view Gerrard’s decision not to stay with them as simply a career move when a better option came along. It will have hurt the Rangers fans and staff, sure. But no more than it would’ve hurt any other club. Shit happens. If ‘big’ clubs can’t handle that, maybe they don’t deserve to be ‘big clubs’.3 -

Rangers & Celtic might be big clubs in terms of support but in financial terms they are miles behind even mid table Premier League clubs. Given a chance to manage in the PL Gerrard was always likely to take up the option.0

Incredible effort from Rangers playing their second 120 minutes in less than 70 hours, to beat a Celtic side who'd had 8 days rest.
Bizarrely considering they were fresh, Celtic were the side who ran out of steam the longer the game went on, very poor from about 70 minutes onwards.3 -

As for doing the right thing by his players, what do you think would have happened if Villa had wanted to sign any of the Rangers players in January? They'd have quite likely been gone, so i don't see why the manager is any different.

I think 90% of Charlton fans would want Hearts to win the Final regardless of which Old Firm team reached the Final.
Personally I support any team against either of them. In the head to heads I do normally support Celtic, not for religious reasons but for footballing ones.
Last year I was pleased that Celtic didn't get to ten in a row,so supported Rangers in those matches.
