A typical League 1 affair to kick off the new year and the first home game of Jackson’s management era (as permanent manager). Unfortunately, the match itself didn’t live up to the occasion. The football wasn’t bad per sé, but thoroughly frustrating nonetheless. Charlton looked like a side that hadn’t played for a couple of weeks (they hadn’t), whereas Wycombe looked a little more composed, if unimaginative and uninspiring. Jackson made a couple of changes from the previous outing, most notably we were without Stockley due to a knock of sorts in midweek.
Overall, I thought we played the better football on balance, but ultimately it came down to one moment of brilliance from Wycombe’s danger man, McCleary that made the difference. When Leko came on at halftime, we looked more like scoring. His effort off the post could have brought us level, but we were unlucky it spun the wrong way. Wycombe took the opportunity late in the second half to slow the game to a crawl and work to frustrate us further. Our best opportunities came in the second half during a period of higher intensity where we forced the issue more through Washington, Leko, and DJ. Once that intensity fizzled, we were chasing more in hope than anything else.
Innis was brought on in the final ten minutes to play as an attacker, presumably to make up for the lack of height and aerial presence that Stockley typically provides. Creative thinking that unfortunately didn’t pay off, though it seemed to shake Wycombe up a little. We had two set pieces late in the second half that were tailored-made for Innis, but we failed to capitalise and neither threatened the goal in any meaningful way.
Back to back defeats and Jacko’s first home defeat makes for a disappointing afternoon.

We needed Stockley against those shithouse CBs.
Josh turning in the most woeful performance seen. Leko was electric and showed worth as a forward.2 -
Wycombe were anti-football mugs, conned the ref in the last 25 minutes, especially Grimmer and Stockdale19

Happy New year from all at Charlton Athletic.4
-
Despite a few decent results when Adkins was replaced by JJ we are now showing that we are nowhere near good enough for a promotion push.
We need another rebuild in the summer so we can push on next season.
Over to you Tommy boy.32 -
Back to back 1-0 defeat against play offs side. Don’t have enough quality up front after Stockley or Washington are out.4
-
Playoffs gone and mid table mediocrity for rest of season….not good enough to be honest13
-
After seeing us play against Plymouth / Wycombe I feel there is more too it than just missing Stockley, Washington or not having a decent enough Striker to bring on the pitch if plan A isnt working.
For too long now, we go a goal down and the whole squad just appear lost, its not limited to the Strikers or Midfield, yet the whole team - Dont know if its a confidence issue or what, but we cant get out of this tier by relying on us to score first every game.4 -
Lets win the efl trophy7

I’m going to sit back and watch the revisionism here, didn’t go, but doesn’t stop me watching the mental gymnastics about to happen5

Only we could not have a game for a couple of weeks, but still manage to pick up an injury to our key forward.9

No drive, no skill, no imagination, no atmosphere. A very shit way to start football in the new year.
This league is shit and we look very much at home in it.17 -
Now 14 points off the top 6 and 9 points above the bottom 4. Only danger is us getting dragged towards the bottom. No chance of the play-offs now.3
-
Goes to show again that if we don't have our two first team strikers we're completely unable to show anything. Desperately need another quality striker as soon as possible this transfer window

We have players not strong enough physically and mentally…..Wycombe won all their one on one battles…3

Boring turgid game.
we’re way too sloppy to get anything out of games, and way too wasteful too!Silly mistakes and silly fouls cost us the second ball often - and just nothing upfront when stockley isn’t around.
really don’t get the constant use of Leko - who drifts in and out of games- roll on CBT bring for again!January a huge time for us, but think it is way too late unfortunately0 -
Frustrating. Scrappy game that the one bit of quality decided. Probably didn't deserve to lose but we are woefully short up top any time one of our first choice strikers is out, was always going to be unsustainable and shows that more should have been done with Schwartz and finding a replacement.
Last 2 games ended any outside chance of playoffs imo, not expecting too much in transfer window now. Expecting more moves to position the squad for next season.2 -
I understand the frustration but we were the better side in the second half and created a couple of reasonable chances so I disagree that our heads go down.ForeverAddickted said:After seeing us play against Plymouth / Wycombe I feel there is more too it than just missing Stockley, Washington or not having a decent enough Striker to bring on the pitch if plan A isnt working.

Can’t believe what this ref let go today…more like a rugby league game….that’s what you get in this shit league7

That was horrible. Even the coverage was crap. Why keep a feckin camera on a player off the ball for so long when the game is being played on?? So slow, Were they from Wycombe to?
As for us we palyed right into WW hands. Sod all urgency. No real movement, sluggish all game.
Davidson had an absolute mare. Was leko returning from covid or injury, as he should of started. Putting Innis up top at the end highlights how much we miss Jayden.
Utter bollocks.

Thought Leko was controlling the game when he was up front, we were growing into it and then JJ switched it and pushed Leko out wide to bring on Burstow. It was a terrible decision! Leko barely saw the ball again and Wycombe coasted the rest of the game. Who knows we might have nicked one because they couldn't deal with him.
Davison had an absolute stinker. It's a long way back from a performance like that. I'm not sure what kind of striker he's supposed to be. He's not a target man, he doesn't run the channels, he's not a finisher, be doesn't play on the half-turn, he's not technical... What is he?
Two losses (and abject performances) on the trot since JJ signed his new contract. Think the lads need to find a new way of motivating themselves because they've been poor.
Another shite season. When will this pain end1 -

Didn't think there was too much between either side just we didn't show any quality in the final third. It's going to be mid table season which is exactly what this side is.
The time wasting and theatrics really annoyed me today. I know everyone does it.1 -
Really depressing. Thought we had turned a corner but we just haven't. Absolutely need players but I'm not even sure we'll get them.0
-
The honeymoon is well and truly over. Thought we deserved something for the second half performance but in truth, we have no cutting edge. Gallen needs to work miracles in the transfer window. Happy New Year, fellow Addicks0
-
For every great performance under Jackson we've had an absolute stinker as well. This squad of players is just nowhere near good enough to get promoted.DDOUBLEE said:Really depressing. Wycombe are the best, worst, football team I’ve seen this season.

Players reverting to type. Wet wipes.0

Wycombe are a fucking horror show. Thoroughly unlikeable players/team and without McCleary are bang average.
Ref was Trevor Kettle-esqe aswell...shocking standard.
Football played by us was okay and we deserved a draw at least.
Urgently need reinforcements as can't rely on Davison...nowhere near good enough.7 -
Can’t argue with This. Feel like Lee has really dropped off

One word summary for that game. Nasty,0

Chin up guys.
Play-offs may now probably be out of touch but we've got 3 trips to Wembley in the PJT and FA Cup (semi and final itself) to look forward to.8
