Gillingham v Charlton | Saturday 21st November 2020 | Post-match thread

A hard battling point on a windy day after the international break is nothing to sniff at. We looked the better side all round, but when you have a penalty saved and give away a soft one of your own, it’s always going to be an up-hill battle. Happy to have salvaged the point. On another day, this would have been a win at a canter.

Over to you.

Too much laborious build-up. Once Smyth came on and Maatsen was pushed up, we looked more dangerous.

Poor result overall, but you can't win them all. Good character to get the equaliser.

Unbeaten run continues, onto the next one.

That was a game you will see now and again in League One. At least we got a point. We know Charlton well enough that if we did not concede first, we might not have turned more attacking.
  • Typical frustrating game against an Evans side.

Elated to see Aneke score again and to see Gilbey back on the pitch.

    Watsons distribution is poor.

As a result Shinnie and Maddison come too deep.

Maatsen and Matthews then have limited options going forward.

I think our problems are stemming from that CDM role.

Picked up a point after going behind late. Weren’t at our best, think we got a bit complacent. Smyth changed the game when he came on.

Also credit to Gillingham, especially Dempsey in the middle. Not the type of football I’d want to watch our team play but it made us look like we ran out of attacking ideas very quickly. 70% possession and we rarely got behind their back line.

Winning run comes to an end... It had to happen, we're quite simply not going to win every game, would rather it happen today so we can start another good run ahead of Ipswich next Saturday - Burton arent going to be much easier on Tuesday night though.

Gillingham were a bit of a Lincoln who were happy to let us have the ball provided we didnt threaten and unfortunately they kept their shape extremely well and disciplined so it did limit our chances to either long range efforts that could have snuck in or tame efforts that will never trouble a Goalkeeper

We certainly missed the toweing Ryan Inniss, even if he isnt the target at corners, the opposition have to be bloody wary of him

Draw was definitely a fair result, never like it when we go to the Priestfields so glad thats done for another year (hopefully two at the very least)

    I’ll take it
  • 2 points dropped but at least we kept the unbeaten run going.

Remember we're without Inniss, Pearce and Famewo.

If only Aneke could keep himself fit to play a full game each week!!
  • Just an annoying game, but no real signs of panic from it.

    Morgan and Shinnie really good

a disappointing result given the recent run but we got an away point without a centre back on the pitch so not all bad
  • Could have been a lot better had the pen gone in
but a point away has a certain positivity.
So on we go to Burton Tuesday, should be a good game
and a good 3 points to boot :)

Frustrating. Get the early goal and we don’t have to go through 90 mins of trying to break them down. Didn’t take our chances and we’ve made it very hard for ourselves. Too many players were off it today, especially Bogle & Washington.

Three goals conceded away from home this season and two of them were from penalties. It says a lot about our performance.

Shit game, always take a point but never like to drop points against a team like Gillingham. Aneke and Smyth are the best impact subs in the world. We go again Tuesday

Also this is like beating a dead horse but Steve Evans, just fuck off you absolute Jupiter sized tosser

Perhaps you should let Bowyer know?

Point ok as didn’t play well. Because of the long gap due to the fa cup resting and international break? Will be more full on on Tuesday I expect.

We've still got the best 'last 5' results in the division.
    Every point helps....
  • Hate dropping points to teams that play like that. Over confidence on the pre match thread. Goal scoring problem not going away.

Draw is better than a loss. Ben Watson was too negative for me today, particularly in the first half, too many sideways and back passes which took away our positive attacks

Did I count 87000 passes for us to kick the ball out for a throw in.

  • Fair result. Horrible game.

Decent 1st half but thought we were poor in the 2nd until Smyth came on.

Time for Bogle to come out of the starting line up and for Aneke to take his place. Also, really unprofessional behaviour for him when we got the penalty. Washington is the designated taker so I have no idea what Bogle was up to.

Had one of the chances gone in during the 1st half we probably would have gone on to win by 3 or 4.

The worst set of match officials I’ve seen for a long time. The ref had an absolute nightmare from start to finish.
