2020/21 Champions League

Starting this thread now, a little tongue in cheek as the current season hasn’t even completed the round of 16.

The next seasons campaign begins today with the preliminary round.
Linfield have beaten Tre Fiori, Drita face Inter Escaldes later.
The winners meet on Tuesday for a place in the first qualifying round.

The draw for the first qualifying round will be made tomorrow.

  • I presume the Qualifying Rounds are single leg games rather than the two this year?
  • The play off round (final round before group games) will be 2 legs, the rest are single legs.

Celtic and other teams in the 2nd qualifying round will be drawn on Monday.
  • I think there must be something wrong with the colour on my TV. I am pretty sure Simone is wearing a blue shirt, blue tie and a blue suit. But the commentators keep going on that he is wearing black.
  • Not got it on TV but Simeone's trademark pitch side attire is normally the all black outfit.
  • Legia Warsaw got knocked out to Nicosia earlier as well.

There is certainly the potential for upsets in these 1 legged games if the favourites approach it wrong
  • Celtic out of the Champions League
    LOL
  • Celtic out of the Champions League
    Good.
  • Celtic out of the Champions League
Celtic were always up against it given that the Hungarian league is ranked an impressive THIRTY THIRD in the latest UEFA coefficients.

It was a tough ask expecting them to get a result at home to a side from a league ranked worse than Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein.

Ferencvaros, keeping Charlton fans happy since 2004.

Ferencváros have qualified for the group stages after beating Djurgårdens, Celtic, Dinamo Zagreb and Molde. Congrats to them.
  • Krasnodar and Midtjylland both qualifying last night for the first time in their history.

Along with Rennes and Istanbul Basaksehir there will now be 4 sides who are competing in the groups for the first time. Draw is this afternoon.
  • Which english club will get the group of death?
  • Inter and Atalanta in pot 3 will be dangerous. Potentially better sides than some of the ones in Pot 1.

City have been put in some tough groups over the years. United will get an easier group as usual.
  • First pair out:

Bayern Munich vs Atlético Madrid. Fantastic match up

    That's attackers against defenders.
  • Looking forward to Atalanta vs Liverpool already
  • Some interesting matches already

    Messi v Ronaldo

And group H is looking like a tough group, PSG, United and Leipzig

    Tough group... for United.

PSG and Leipzig qualify from that, easy.
  • Some really good ties in most groups there.

Lazio v Dortmund should be fun.
  • No real groups of death there although i think United have got a tough group and might have a battle for second.

City will be delighted as Porto are probably the weakest top seed, and Chelsea will be quite happy too compared to other sides they could've got.

Will definitely try to watch as many games from Liverpool's group as possible. Ajax and Atalanta will both go toe to toe with them so they should be great games.
  • I feel sorry for the fans of teams in the CL for the first time. Rennes (missing trips to Sevilla and Chelsea), Midtjylland (Anfield and Ajax) and Istanbul (PSG and Old Trafford).

Also Ferencvaros in the CL for the first in a quarter of century and they miss trips to Juve and Barca.
  • Liverpool have got the best group in terms of travel. Nothing further than the North of Italy.
With the luxury of first class flights even the further journeys are not too bad but that doesn’t stop managers complaining

Group stages start tonight then. Which game will be the most entertaining do we reckon?

    Chelsea v Sevilla
    Stade Rennais v FC Krasnodar

Zenit St Petersburg v Club Brugge
    Lazio v Borussia Dortmund

    Dynamo Kyiv v Juventus
    Barcelona v Ferencvaros

    PSG v Manchester United
    RB Leipzig v Basaksehir
