I don't buy into this "one last big contract for L Jones" stuff at 29 - that's the excuse that was used for Alfie May in the summer yet he is 2 years older at 31 (and Jones has only JUST turned 29 in October anyway)
I think the point is that this could be his last chance. Last season he looked like a bang average league 1 player, this season he’s looked like a championship player. He’d be wise to cash in now in case he returns to that previous level or gets injured
I’ll contend that he was very good last season too, just playing for managers that didn’t how to set up a defence.
I don't know that he was very good. He was good at the start but when he dipped oh my god did he dip. I can't remember all his goofs but he had a particularly bad one against Port Vale when he did poorly for two goals and he had such a pisstit of a game against Northampton he got hauled off at halftime. He was then mercy killed by Fleming for the Blackpool game, was brought on at halftime and gave away a goal within 10 minutes. He stayed dropped for the Derby game. I don't think I've seen a defender look so devoid of confidence since Simon Francis for us, he forgot how to do basic things like charge down shots, win headers and take up a vaguely sensible position.
Think he said he was playing through a painful injury during that period.
If we sell Jones, then I suspect it'll be CM trying to prove to the US owners he can bring money in! I would also suggest that the backlash against the SMT would be vociferous at the very least and more fans will vote with their feet! CM is a 100 mph prat and it's the sort of stupid stunt he'd pull just to save his own skin. Jones is by a very large margin the best defender we have, in fact I'd suggest one of the best players we have at the club! Moving Jones on, no matter how much we're offered, will put pay to any chance, however remote, we have of making the play-offs, sadly CM and Scott are short-sighted enough to make such a stupid decision! I can only hope Gavin Carter reads this and other SM to realise the damage it would do. I want to see the US owners building a competitive squad, not allowing CM and Co. to make a few bob!
Tbh not entirely clear to me what this ownership group have done to warrant this tone and level of negativity and cynicism.
They haven’t spent much money on playing staff explicitly I guess, but they’ve done quite a lot of sensible stuff and I have no reason to doubt their intentions.
Maybe that’s just me.
I do think the ownership has good intentions also and they have appointed a SMT fir the day to day running and stewardship of the club. It’s really still early days for our owners and I’d expect that they’ll soon want to see progress on the pitch. If the SMT can’t deliver that, then I fully expect them to be replaced. The disappointment of this season lays firmly at the door of the SMT and Jones and not with the money. If Jones is sold I doubt the ownership will have much to do with it. It will be another nail in the SMT’s coffin. Can’t see how they avoid more failure by selling the best players, particularly to another league one club.
They've been around for a season and a half now and we have got progressively worse. We've had three managers, we've struggled to hold onto our best players and despite apparently having one of the highest wage bills in the division, we've played pretty much, dog shit football for 18 months and we are struggling to make the play offs again !
Come on now. Charlie boy told us all they were really clever, they could stop our losses and make profits IF they ran the club sensibly.
We had the 8-8-8 ludicrous youtube Q&A last January and one year on, we're hardly much better suited with Dobson, CBT and May - arguably our best 3 players all having gone out of the door.
How long do you want to give them before we are allowed to question their stewardship?!
There are a few things in that post that don't ring any bells for me. Firstly, being dog shit for eighteen months, the current owners took over late in the summer of 2023 after Sandgaard started fucking about in the previous February, yes they didn't do that well in signing players ready for the season but they did bring in Alfie May but there were far too many players left on the books who weren't good enough and there wasn't enough time to move them on and replace. The sacking of Dean Holden was badly handled, considering the squad he was expected to get perform, but Appleton was a wrong fit, in fairness to him, very few managers would have been able to handle the loss of Leaburn, Anke to long term injury and CBT deciding he would not re-sign and wanted a move, which he new he would get with only six months left on his contract. When Nathan Jones took over we had a shocking performance at Reading, with Ladapo, Edun and Watson having shockers and quite a few not far behind them. Small was signed as a free agent and suddenly our form turned, we climbed the league with a notable draw at Bolton and a win at promotion bound Derby, our form tailed off towards the end of season as players who suspected they would not be retained turned off the gas. Secondly I don't remember Charlie stating that the new owners 'could stop our losses and make a profit' and I really don't think they would believe it if he did, they are actually paying the bills and so far player sales, sadly Alfie May, have been invested into replacements, whether you agree or like those replacements is probably a mute point and the responsibility of the coaching staff to make sure that those replacements justify their place in the team. Returning to our form, there is no doubt that Nathan Jones stance on defence first was affecting results but so did the loss to injuries of Lloyd Jones, Ramsay, Watson and a further seven players, since the majority have returned we've won the last three, we sit five points off sixth place Barnsley with two games in hand, a position that the majority on this site declared 'in or around the play off positions at the half way point would do for me' . So summing up, we didn't struggle to hold on to our best players, we made a conscious decision to sell Alfie May, we took the money for CBT as he would have walked away for nothing at the end of the season and the loss of George Dobson was another decision made by the club, rightly or wrongly. Our form is better than it has been in eighteen months and certainly better than when Sandgaards ego finally went pop, overall we are not in a bad position on or off the field of play.
overall we are not in a bad position on or off the field of play
@BaileyI would say that we are not in a good position at all.
Don't mind me asking why ? Elfsborg.
Our position in the league table, as for Mary, Mungo and Midge, I'm not going to go over what has already been mentioned with being concerned about operations.

Why the league position then, liking Charlie or the owners is probably a matter of belief in what their intentions are.

The oft used term of top 4/6 budget has clearly not worked for 18 months. The table does not lie.
If we lose Jones to Wycombe it will be a new low for me. I don't have any info on this btw just reading press
That’s surely not going to happen. Charlton to Wycombe you are having a laugh.
WYCOMBE WANDERERS have been taken over by a Kazakhstan billionaire. Mikheil Lomtadze's Blue Ocean Partners Ltd has purchased 90 per cent of the club that was owned by American businessman Rob Couhig since 2022. Lomtadze, 48, is worth £4.54billion and is the 532nd richest person in the world.5 May 2024
It doesn’t matter if he is the 11th riches man in Belgium , it’s not going to happen.

The table does not lie once every team has played 46 games but it’s a largely irrelevant metric when used on it’s own after only 22 games.
Re Lloyd Jones: It’s fair enough to level some frustration at the SMT. The excuse seems to be “we can’t control what the player wants” - AKA it’s too difficult to keep him because his contract has run down and we’re a less attractive prospect than Wycombe Wanderers (sob). Well yeah, the standard of recruitment around Jones has been a seriously mixed bag at best and as a result we’ve been rubbish for prolonged periods this season (fingers crossed the turnaround continues).
1. Signing good new players. 2. Hanging onto good existing players. 3. Clearing out dead wood. Those are a few decent performance indicators for Scott and Methven, and it’s pretty inconclusive so far - albeit on a shortish timeframe for 2 and 3.
While we’re on the subject, 8+8+8 is laughable nonsense for any club with hopes of coming close to winning the league (which seems lofty but shouldn’t be) and I can’t believe I was taken in by it. It’s made funnier by the fact that the new line is that we’re reducing the squad to 22 😂. Which 8 is Lloyd Jones in?

And I believe this might well be the final straw for some of the faithful. Attendances during the cold winter months might well drop to a lower level than expected.
And that's ignoring what might be going on with Miles behind the scenes...
Time to make some serious decisions & maybe push the boat out for the owners/SMT.

That is a lot on mental gymnastics going on there to try and protect the SMT. They have been shocking with no sign of any improvement.
Just a handful of glowing reviews about Etete on CardiffLife:
Just the kind of striker Scott loves. From the Championship - tick, scored very few goals -tick, overrated and overpriced - tick. Has such little ball control he barely looks like a park footballer, let alone a pro - tick. Imagine him and Ahadme up front to together, go Scott!
Good job he don't chose the players then and its down to Jones
Someone is telling you porkies.
CM has said it and Jones has said it that was one of the main points he wanted before he joined hence the manager title and not head coach
I don’t trust anything CM says and the rumour was NJ had final say on a player, but that doesn’t mean he’s in charge of recruitment. He can only approve what’s presented to him, unfortunately, in the case of Ahadme it’s overpriced crap on a very long contract.

Bet Jones couldn’t believe his luck when presented with his old Luton chums by the SMT, chances of that eh?

If selling / letting go of our best players was a conscious decision so we'd be in the play off positions all year playing attractive, progressive football I'd understand.
Could we not have a "Total Bollocks and Random Bulshite thread" and leave the transfer rumours thread all nice and pristine for you know like actual transfer rumours?

You obviously haven’t read a lot of the other threads on here these days. Just cos it ain’t got the title, don’t mean it doesn’t include the content! 😏
I don't buy into this "one last big contract for L Jones" stuff at 29 - that's the excuse that was used for Alfie May in the summer yet he is 2 years older at 31 (and Jones has only JUST turned 29 in October anyway)
Teams are buying younger players now, Jones at 29 would not have any sell price for a club who bought him

Why always think of sell on price? For example if Jones went to Wycombe and was a major part in getting promotion the he will have paid for himself with inceased revenues in the Championship.
What was Mendonca's sell on value, late twenties bit of a journey but his goals fired us to the Premier League.

The table does not lie.
And that's ignoring what might be going on with Miles behind the scenes...
Time to make some serious decisions & maybe push the boat out for the owners/SMT.
But we aren't.
