When one of your players finished top scorer in the division and also has the record he has over the last few seasons it would be more surprising if the club didn’t have bids coming in ! They haven’t accepted yet so maybe he won’t go however if the price gets too good to refuse then we like most will sell. I love Alfie and want him to stay but I don’t think our season will be defined by him being here or not tbh
Peterborough had a 20-30 goal striker at their club and barely started him last season.
They scored more goals as a team (89) last season than they did in either of the two previous seasons at this level where they relied on him for over 36% of their goals (31 of 83 & 26 of 75).
Football is a simple game in most ways but that doesn’t mean it’s as simple as taking out one player’s goal contributions and you can predict how a team will perform without them.
BEFORE ANYONE JUMPS ON THIS TO SAY I’M BLAMING ALFIE FOR THE TEAM UNDERPERFORMING : I really am not, I’m trying to show that there is life in a football team with or without your previously profilic forward.
What we need are goals spread out amongst the entire team a lot more - Ridiculous how our second top scorer didn't get into double figures last season, if my memory serves me right.

In the avoidance of doubt I'm not saying that Alfie is the one & only striker/forward and without him we'd be sunk. The problem is last season once CBT left it was really only Alfie that was scoring. Just look at our goal scoring chart. Until we sign 3 or 4 players that can score 6-8 goals each then we are still stuck where we were. We also have to sort out our set plays and/or bring in a dead ball specialist. Hardly any goals from corners (2?) and when was it we last scored direct from a free kick ?
I am/was hoping this would be the main area we'd be concentrating on this summer. Midfielders who can score (like Bowyer) and players who can score from free kicks. Without addressing those we wont be going anywhere next season.

The other strikers are "in the bush" ie we haven't signed them plus the two strikers whose names have been suggested on here are quite promising but unproven.
Alfie May is not Charlton and we can be successful without him but he is a very good league 1 goal scorer which is why a team looking for promotion from this division are willing to pay, allegedly, over £1m for him.
Anyway, as it stands, May hasn't left. If and when he does maybe he will be like when Spain dropped Raul, their star striker, because they wanted to play in a different way and he didn't fit into that. Spain won two euros and a world cup without him.
Then again, selling Yann didn't work out very well.

Ok, so the bid is verified and correct by Cawley i agree, and there may be other bids, who knows, but until and if he is sold, it is still in the balance, I do tend to cling on to as many straws as I can.....🙄
I think the issue is you can't just spend £5m without it having to be balanced a bit somewhere somehow. Whether that's through player sales, increased pricing on tickets, more commercial deals and sponsorships, or through adding it on as debt or writing it off as equity, it has to go somewhere. So maybe selling May for more than a million helps to balance the books in that way.
Clubs can't just say "fuck it let's spend spend spend and to hell with the rules"
I believe FFP is not applicable in Leagues 1 and 2.
Let’s face it, the squad hasn’t been good enough for last 3 seasons, and they included fan favourites, like it or not, they are haven’t been good enough for promotion, that is either ability or mentality or both! My comments not everyone will agree, but that is a fact. Personally I am excited by that changes behind the scenes, the attitude of jones, and the fact the clubs attitude is no one is bigger than the club.

The club needed a total rebuild in 2020, in 2021, in 2022 and in 2023. It needs one now. Any rebuild risks casualties. Have you looked at the totality of this squad?
The issues are I suggest a great deal bigger than 1, 2 or 3 players.
I liked Dobson, saw Blackett-Taylors’ maverick production as random at best while May is precisely what you see on the tin. You are entitled to acclaim who you like but what are we talking about here? Dobson failed at Sunderland, CBT was signed off the street, while £250k acquired May.
I respect their efforts & talents yet not a shred of even passing Championship interest?
At this juncture having given a new manager a long term contract to rebuild the club I am inclined to let him do his job. As with any boss, do I expect to agree with even half of the decisions? No, After 40yrs in business why would I change the habits of a life time?
I share Jones coaching & management values. No, they will not suit everyone but if you are not true to your values you will fail. I will judge him by the nature of the squad he constructs over the coming days & weeks and the performances/ results over the season.
Would I prefer it to include Mr May? Until I have more clarity in terms of the direction of travel, yes. Do I understand from a palpably weak squad perspective why you might blow it all up and start again. I do.
I am not sure on what planet anyone would suggest launching a promotion campaign on the back of Aneke (no material contribution in 2yrs), Leaburn (unlikely to contribute pre October 2024 after 10 months out of the game), Kanu (22 league starts). With Casey and Mbick it is a question of 2 reclamation and 3 development projects
This is not of Jones creation. It is a position he inherited.
May I therefore politely suggest in promotion terms there is a rather desperate need of not one but two significant additions to the attacking options. On the basis of upgrading the quality of the squad by acquiring players who can instantly contribute it suggests such additions will be most palpably be coming to compete with Mr May for the shirt.
Doesn’t mean May won’t win the shirt but better players means more competition for places and I’d expect any Manager to be open and honest with any player about the way forward.
If I repeat IF there are options for a 3rd quality addition which will allow May to pursue other opportunities then it seems only fair to explore them. Doesn’t mean it will happen, doesn’t mean it won’t.
Is it a risk? Of course it is. That is the nature of management. The real issue here is how do you expect anyone to prove themselves unless you empower and support them in their endeavours.
The world will always be full of naysayers endlessly lobbing contentious bricks of abuse from the sidelines. That’s OK.

But selling one of the leagues best players to what will be, I hope on our part, a promotion rival doesn’t make sense. Surely we can keep May and still add strikers to the team. If we do sell May it will be a copy of what happened when that idiot Duchatelet came in and sold Yann. The new management then said - well how good can he be ? - the team is nearly bottom of the Championship and we can get better replacements in - eg Polish Pete, Vetokele, Tucadean. None of them proved to be anywhere near Yann’s level and those of us who had watched all his games knew that. It’s one of those ideas where there is always something or someone better around the corner. May is a proven goal scorer ( twice over !) at League 1 level. Charlton would be stupid to sell him.
Except that one wasn’t sanctioned by the manager. And also this ‘new management’ were the ones that brought him in.
No one knows if he’ll go and no one knows how it will pan out, but with all his goals last season, we came 16th and finished in our worst ever league position. We must improve the squad and if selling May is the only way we can do that then so be it. I’ll be gutted to lose him, but Jones knows what he wants and I have far more faith in him then anyone else who have been running this club for the past 8-10 years.

I don't think selling him improves our squad. He wasn't the reason we finished 16th but we must certainly would have finished below that position without him!
How about waiting and see where we are at once the window has closed and see if we are in a stronger position.. if you ask my opinion, we will see a different Charlton this year, and the players left from last season, will be sharper, fitter and stronger
Just a reminder Dubai that you were happy with our transfer business when the window closed last summer.

I've no doubt the team needs to function as a unit and Jones needs to buy the ingredients if we want him to make the dinner, but whether we're going to be successful or not, Alfie May is a great player and character and many people will be gutted to see him go.

I totally agree with you, but Jones is in charge this window, and has been planning since February, he is a vision of what he wants the side to do, and what type of player is required to do that, so we have to trust his process
