I fully understand the 'angst' over Alfie, I also understand that in some quarters people don't trust or have faith in NJ and/or the new owners. However everytime I open CL there are numerous unread posts on the RUMOURS thread. I open it in eager anticipation of a rumour or even of a 'signing imminent' only to find ongoing discussions on Alfie, and his 'unkown' situation. Now I also get a few people want to express their opinions, BUT, it's the same stuff being regurgitated.
Let's wait and see what, if anything, transpires and perhaps in the meantime get back to rumours etc. Nothing anyone on here is saying is going to change whatever the outcome is.

And then the perennial "wait until the window closes before assessing the squad...". Thing is, once the window closes it's too late to do anything. At least Jones realises that. It just depends on whether the SMT/Andy Scott really do want to back him or just want to square the books.
If you take May out of the team you have to find 20+ goals from somewhere. Be it another 20+ striker (doubt it) or goals from elsewhere. Berry might chip in with more than Dobbo/Fraser/Bakinson did, but you still need to find those extra goals from somewhere.....and we haven't yet replaced CBT contribution either.
As the window progresses, your posts start to get more and more likes, and by the end of the window everyone is singing from your hymn sheet.

I'll obviously still follow the club, post on here & maybe even go to a couple of away games (for my son's sake) but I can't get my head around selling the Leagues top goal scorer when last season he was about the only player who knew where the goal was. Yes it would seem a strange decision but if it turns out to be the decision that allows us to improve and achieve our goals then surely its the right one?

They scored more goals as a team (89) last season than they did in either of the two previous seasons at this level where they relied on him for over 36% of their goals (31 of 83 & 26 of 75).

I’m not a professional football manager looking to rebuild a career that stalled at Southampton and stoke but if this is true it is a worry. Alfie scored more goals in 1 season than Wickham managed in 9 years. I wish jones all the best but “not liking” a guy whose goals kept us up despite being played wide right, attacking midfield and up front and always gave 100% was the sweetcorn in a pile of shite last year.
If we sell Alfie and sign two big lumps who arent prolific but we go up, the truth is, most fans wont even be talking about Alfie come June next year.
If he does sell him and we don't go up then quite rightly fans will be asking major questions.
Where as if we keep alfie and dont go up, then Jones will still be questioned. he probably thinks it best to either succeed or fail on his own terms, which as much as i like Alfie, is something i admire in Jones.2 -

Someone above alluded to the fact that FFP rules are different in the Championship to L1. If board are injecting equity to front load a promotion push, fair play.
Is a 32yo Alfie likely to be effective if we are promoted? No. The scenario only works if we buy strikers who can perform at a higher level. We will see.1 -

Firstly I don't want Alfie to leave, not only because of his goals contribution, but his energy and personality as well - he is a player I just love to see and around that team.
But I just think football is much more nuanced than this and that ultimately no one knows if it is a good or bad decision until the season has finished.
If we sell Alfie, and get promoted with a 23 year old striker instead who can then perform in the Championship (which is what Jones vision is) then it is the right decision.
If we miss out, and it's because of goal contribution and not defence (which has been the problem the last two years), then it was a poor decision.
Until then, it is fine to have differing points, and having different points are not having an 'agenda' - but making sweeping views based on this one decision is just silly.

I try and steer clear of reading too much about Charlton between the seasons as its mainly gossip and hysterics around rumours. However I've succumbed to looking with the bonkers rumour that May may go !If this is the case this really does round of a hatrick of f*** ups from CBT, Dobbo going and now May really?I can't get my head around why NJ wouldn't want a proven goal machine in the team and a player who runs his socks off for the team.However ultimately the only test which matters is next May, 2025we May be promoted, we May be in Play offs, We May be middle table, We May be even worse....4

I am critical of the owners when they have been in the wrong, but for once we have decent ownership, that are trying to make this work, but for what ever reason, fans still have a negative outlook on it. No point scoring 2 goals a game if you're conceding 3. We have hardly any assets of value and if selling Alfie helps us reinvest across the board then I can get on board with it. Alfie is a fantastic player and I'd love to keep him, but how many times did we concede from set pieces this year? And more importantly, how many did we score? A bigger #9 is Nathan's previously preferred choice and helps at both ends of the pitch.2
