Post-Match Thread: Charlton Athletic vs Reading | Saturday 21st October 2023 - 3pm KO

Reading came to the Valley with problems both on and off the pitch, finding themselves in a run of poor form and rooted second from bottom. They managed to match us in the first half, perhaps having the better chances to go ahead.

The second half was much better from Charlton. The opening goal came down the left, with Corey Blackett-Taylor ghosted past his defender and delivered a cross that Chuks Aneke headed in. Unfortunately, Chuks went off a little later after a tangle with the solid centre back that left him with what looked like another, likely longterm, hamstring injury. Three subs were made, with Miles Leaburn, Tyreece Campbell, and Nathan Assimwe coming on. At that point, Charlton were unleashed!

Tyreece Campbell made an almost immediate impact going forward on the right with pace. He found space at the edge of the box and delivered a veritable laser beam that blasted past the keeper to double the Addicks’ lead. Next up was Alfie May, who got on the end of a Blackett-Taylor cross to scissor kick it in from ten yards. A little later, Tyreece delivered an absolute peach of a ball to put Miles Leaburn through on goal and Charlton four goals to the good.

Charlton 4 Reading 0

Over to you.

It looked like a pretty dull match for the most part. In Chuks and the substitutes though, we had quality that Reading could never match.  We edge closer to the play-offs and it’s very pleasing to note that we now have the best goal difference outside of the top three. My only hope now is that the Chuks substitution was precautionary and not the result of another serious injury.

It was dull until we scored, at which point a switch was flicked and it was like the Colosseum, and our boys weren't the Christians

Well done.  I am a shameless curmudgeon, especially when it comes to Charlton BUT well done.

Once again all it takes is CBT getting a few yards of space in the second half and everything changes. I thought it was an even game up until then. 4 different forwards scoring is brilliant as well. Tyreece, Asiimwe and Fraser all excellent off the bench.

Pretty gutting to lose Aneke as he’ll no doubt be out for several months, but we hopefully have enough strength up front to keep the goals flowing.

What a great second half after Reading had proved to devoretty decent in the first.
Quite a few lifers saying in the match preview that this is the sort of game we often lose (away team on a long losing streak away from home etc), but we don’t seem to be that team any more.
So much quality on display in that second period. Corey unplayable again with three great assists, good performances all over the pitch, and four goals of the highest quality.
Tyreece has totally won me over. Cracking strike for his goal, and a wonderful assist for Miles, who looked brilliant again.
No mistakes from Hector this time. He looked class today, and with Jones has formed a strong centre back partnership now.
The only downside was Corey’s hamstring. Just have to hope he’s not out for too long.
But what a game. Absolutely buzzing.
Was he injured as well as Aneke, I assumed Corey went off to protect him for the upcoming games

Really dull up and until we got the lead. The attacking players we have on our bench make us such a threat if we are level at home and them make the changes.

41 home league goals in 2023 now - only Ipswich and Barnsley have scored more (in all 4 leagues)
Almost half of these under Appleton

Just cannot understand leaving Chuks on for so long…we all know 45 mins is max…
He wouldn't have scored his goal from the bench.
But Leaburn might have scored 2…well never know in this Universe…and he might not have got injured…

Nice to see us finally kill off a team on paper we should be beating, before Appleton we were prone to slip ups in these games. Hopefully Chuks isn’t injured too long.

After we scored we were brilliant but before we were brilliant we kept them out which maybe is a real change. Another change is that apart from Dobbo, all of our goals have come from forward players. And Kanu got a few for Southend today too.

Hector was top drawer and is really forming a good partnership with Jones. Thomas also really good
This. The defensive mistakes come from being overloaded in midfield by having 3 attacking players across the midfield 5. Pound for pound the back 4 were very good.
