I wish we'd stop making excuses or glossing over how bad we've become.

Winning is a good habit to get into.  Whoever plays in the side.

    Our reserve goalkeeper is terrible
Our back four/three have been constantly over run, unorganised and lacking in leadership, discipline and desire all year.
Our midfield is devoid of two of its better players and the fabled dead ball specialist from Burton has forgotten how to kick the fucking dead ball.

    Blackett Taylor
    May
    Campbell
    Campbell
    Leaburn

Can't win it by themselves, despite trying bloody hard to.

We have forgotten how to win games.

That is simply unacceptable.   Whichever way you look at it.
Sorry, but my LOL was for this comment. If you didn't laugh, you'd cry  :'(

8 games and 6 defeats, when you put it like that, is damning.
And the two wins were narrow ones against struggling sides at The Valley.
As has been said; international break, the right manager appointed and allowing him to bring his own staff (with some defensive coaches perhaps) is essential.
    No pressure Andy Scott.
All bar Newport were narrow defeats, in fairness.

Not that I am defending the defending, BTW.
  • I’m actually dreading the FA Cup.

Its alright,  a loss to Didcot Town doesnt matter, its a cup competition we'll never win and a pointless distraction.
  • After watching that farce last night it is clear that the problem lies with disinterested players who totally lack any discipline or sense of pride in the shirt.
This only makes it more of a matter of extreme importance to get the Manager post sorted urgently, and whoever it is proves right this time.
11 days before the next game…get it sorted Charlton, this is becoming beyond embarrassing now…😫

It was a bit of a shambles, but the substitutions in defence turned a win into a loss. Before Laq and Roddy we were very likely to win that
And it has to be said that Tedic was a significant drop in threat to Leaburn.
Time to call Lyle Taylor.Free agent. Contract based on appearances and goals.
  • Nice to see Leaburn back and scoring

Our back 4 are a total shambles

nothing more to say having just watched the highlights
  • Looking at our goals, not a single one really celebrated scoring. How comes? Below our level?!

You say the problem lies with disinterested players who totally lack any discipline or sense of pride in the shirt.

Bloody hell that’s some statement.Think back to when you or I played football .If we even showed any of that attitude we would not be picked to play. You pull on that shirt with pride and play your heart out full bloody stop.

Oh fuck off Kirk. He's been hiding all game. Ambling about. Done nothing.
He is an absolute joke of a player...

I can’t recall our players ever celebrating goals too much in this cup.

  • We've played two League Two teams this season and shipped seven goals. That's unacceptable, regardless of who is playing in defence.

We've been poor defensively for a long time and errors just keep on coming. It's not just the current lot, think of the howlers from Pearce, Sarr, Famewo, Innis to name just four.

Where's the defensive coaching? I thought at least Pearce might be able to teach them when to play it out neatly and when to hoof it. It's like the coaches think they're dealing with Manchester City's defenders.

We've conceded needless goal in every game bar the Orient opener this season. At least Camara apologised for his mistake but he's not a defender.

The priority for any new manager and coaching set-up is to organise the defence and if that means a bit less quality in our play the so be it. A scrappy win is better than a defeat where we play well but lose due to yet another cock-up.

How depressing getting pumped by chuffing Crawley, and I don’t even give a chuff about this competition.

I don’t agree with the disinterested bit but I do on discipline. And I’d also add that we seem to lack fitness and inevitably we lack confidence too.

Although I thought it was too early at the time, I’m coming around to understanding why Holden had to go-we’re an absolute shambles and, injuries aside, much of that is at his door. We should have spent the summer working on fitness and shape but here we are in September still taking about it….

Exactly.  I think that we need a proper captain. Dobson is a great player but he doesn't gee the players up or shout enough.
When we concede a goal the players just walk about with their heads down.
  • Slept on it and I am actually really disappointed still. I understand people want to try and maintain positive no matter what and I respect that, but we just had Crawley Town's second team put 4 past a match day squad that was largely our full strength team in a league game.

I spoke to 6 Crawley Town fans after the game and they all said the same stuff. That Leaburn and Tyreece Campbell look like proper players, we looked like we had no idea how to play football, no strategy, we just played it sideways and gambled one of our forwards would do something. They aren't wrong either and it was good to get perspectives from fans who watch their team play (on paper) weaker clubs every week. They said there was literally no difference between us and a league 2 side.

I understand Pearce has only just inherited the team, but you have to question the culture of our club from top to bottom, that these lads can't handle playing a team from the division below who are also fielding a weakened side.
    You....what?!
  • Took some positives away as my previous post shared last night, but after sleeping on it and hearing JP’s interview, I think we really do need somebody with a firmer attitude in to wake some of these players up and get them doing what they are capable of doing. Some of the younger lads should not be near the first team yet - Ness, Campbell and Kanu (plus AMB, Anderson and Asiimwe) is quite enough and have been stepping up.

While topping up/enhancing training routines etc in-season is normal and fine, dealing with the basics is a sign of inadequate prep going into the season and into matches. Get a grip CAFC, starting at the top!

  • Genuine question, has Kirk ever beaten a man for us?

    Here we go again,

All the players highlighted are in or around or expected to be part of our match day squads. Only players of note really missing are; CBT, May, Hector, Asiimwe, Anderson, Jones and the players on international duty. Question marks on a few of those players and whether or not they are good enough for us regardless.

If you think that wasn't a 'strong' Charlton side all things considered, I don't know what to tell you.

Then again you think we have good defenders at the club when so far we have conceded a whopping 16 goals in 8 games resulting in 2 wins and 1 clean sheet along the way.
  • Edun, Leaburn and Watson, all of whom are first team players, were subbed off while we were dominant and looked like scoring more, at which we finally did fall apart with one of the worst back 4s in Charlton history, albeit not one that's going to even slightly resemble what we put out in the league.

Hector and Jones are decent imo. Jones has looked quite good and Hector, while he's made errors, has a very high level when his head's right.

We scored 3 and could have scored 5 or 6, that wasn't the issue. Going forward we looked good. But as soon as we put Laq and Roddy on either side of a struggling young CB pair...it didn't matter who was in front of them. Pearce threw them under the bus a bit tbh
  • Oh and I'll add that Chin actually, first minute aside, played pretty well and looked a credible option, albeit again not someone who's going to play much in the league.

  • Glorified u23 game, the reaction is well OTT. We subbed off Leaburn at HT to give him a rest, and didnt even put May in the squad.

When we were passing the ball across the back four the ball inevitably ended up with a tightly marked full back. They had nowhere to go. This directly resulted in the first goal, when Chin to give the ball away.
Could see Ness getting frustrated because if the lack of options he had with the ball at his feet. Where we’re the runners, where was the movement?
Somehow, this didn’t apply to Crawley, who seem to cope quite well, probably because of the lackadaisical marking that we employed. They moved the ball around well up the wings, but also seemed to have the option move inside. We had very little of that fluidity.
I don’t know if it was a small pitch, but we also never seemed to have the option of the ball over the top, which we do normally with May. It was hard to evaluate Tedič because he probably only received the ball to his feet a couple of times.
Most dispirited I’ve felt since the Slade era.
On the bright side, at least expectation levels are very low now, so any new manager should have a good chance of exceeding them.

was impressed with how he bounced back from that first minute actually. He really wasn’t helped by Ness either

It showed how much he cared about the result

Yes its good to win as many games as possible, but then the more games you play, you increase the risk of injury regardless of the players history

Laqeretabua (I'm Googling his name, rather than a spelling genius) will have learnt a shit load from that game - For the most part it won't be positive but he's got an idea now of where he needs to improve, and what its going to take for him to become a First Team regular.

Reading from those who pay closer attention to the Youth Team than others, it seems this current crop could go a long way... Would rather use these games to aid their development, than "risk Leaburn"... Which was one of the main questions when the team got announced in the first place.

Little disappointed actually we didn't see Patrick Casey in the team.

    Not really.

    Deep breath:

Possibly the worse defending by both sides I have seen since 🤔  ????

Felt like a pre season friendly with the amount of subs from both sides and Leaburn and Chin only playing 45 minutes because of playing catch up after injuries.
If last night was the second friendly in mid July then no problem but we are in September and we are still undercooked with more niggling injuries.

    Some positives:
Forwards: Leaburn, May, the Campbells, Kanu, CBT will do fine. Too early too judge Tedic.

Midfield: Dobson, Watson, Taylor, Fraser, Camará, and Anderson(in time) will do fine.

    Defence 🤦🏻‍♂️
Hector and Ness have regressed, So at the moment we are the box of Chocolates with the soft centres.
Because Ness looks all at sea it hard to Judge Deji but he does still look Raw.
Jones, the RB Watson and Edun may get up to speed but it all looking shambolic at present.
We still haven't found a keeper as consistent as Philips who was very steady for Cafc when he finally got the Jersey.

Roddy looked better going forward but can't defend so more Kent League than League 1.

Chin after his mistake after 40 seconds had a decent 1st half despite having his career slaughtered by a CL member who posted in the 1st minute !

Only ever coached with kids but the defence, midfield and forwards were not separate entities. They have to link and everyone had to know their jobs.

Our players are like Strangers though TBF some of them are.

  • I'm not bothered by the fact it's not fashionable at the moment to play it, but with the players we have I think a basic 442 suits them. Chem Campbell on the wing with Tyreece a back up and Blackett Taylor on the other. Although there are question marks about both defensively there I concede.

May and Leaburn up front together is a good partnership at this level. Both should score double figures in goals this season.

Jones and Hector in a back 4 already looked better than in previous games. Although neither have been convincing this season. Question marks over Hector's desire.for example, but he was better on Saturday.

In a midfield 2 you need to show for the ball which Dobson does, and there is a plethora of other Centre Midfielders to choose from when fit.

I don't think it's a great team, but success may come if we play to it's strengths.
