Andy Scott has proved to be utterly useless. One of the problems is that he has a perception that players who cant get in Championship sides must be good enough for league 1. When we signed Edun - my Blackburn supporting mate said he was useless. When we signed Bakinson from bottom of the Championship Sheffield Weds, my mate who is supporter had never heard of him. Gillesphey & Ladapo don’t look good enough and nor does REG. Coventry is OK but we didn’t need him because we had George in that position. The only bright spark in my book is that my Harrogate supporting mate texted me immediately to say that Ramsey was their best player. He’s the guy who has not started yet because T Watson is playing there ?

I suggest you check his stats. A huge majority of those performances were from the bench. And lots of times he never even got off it.

Dobson is leaving in the summer and you’re saying Scott is closer to being out in the summer than that? How does that work?
I’m not sure the individuals signed are the main issue with Scott. Whilst they have been poor, most came with good reputation and the mood music on here was there was a step up in quality.
I think the incompetence lies in 1) the balance of the squad, particularly the missing pieces like a proper number 9, which makes things really difficult for decent players, like Coventry or LWat 2) the belief that we can completely restructure our squad mid season and 3) related, bringing in players from the league above, who’ve just been promoted out of this league, and thinking they’ll be arsed enough to come into the team and be an instant ‘leader’. The Powell squad was full of players who seemed chuffed to be here, or had a point to prove. Alfie May was our best signing and he felt coming to charlton was an honour and privilege.
Scott clearly was responsible for the signings in at least 2 windows if not 3. Also seems to have been responsible for Holden then Apples coming in. Club structure was that the team was picked/run by Head Coach, who would report to Scott.
It would seem that CBT and Dobson, our two best and most influential players, both of whom would be out of contract in the summer were offered terms to stay. This was confirmed by Rodwell in the video before Christmas. As was said then and at other times, no club can force a player to sign a new contract and if more cash is on the table elsewhere, you can see why a player would opt to leave. As it looked like both of these players would be leaving in the January window, Scott had tried to find replacements. Step forward Bakinson/Coventry/ Lapado.
It’s also been said many times that you can’t really get decent players in the January window. But Scott clearly had to do something with CBT and Dobbo most likely to leave.
It would seem that Scott had previously said (it’s in his profile on Wikipedia) he wants all players at clubs he works at to play his preferred system. Recent events appear to show this to be 352. Clearly Apples didn’t want to play that system but could no longer argue against it when his system delivered a run of games with no wins.
With Apples leaving, Scott then had the chance to recruit to his preferred 352.
However the owners who after all are bankrolling all of this clearly decided to be involved with recruiting the next manager. They said (according to Jones) they wanted a manager not a head coach. This is a shift from Scott’s preferred set up and undermines his position. Someone at the club (who?) linked up the owners (who wanted it to be their decision this time) with Jones who has recent success and a Charlton connection, thus ticking two important boxes. And of course he was available so no compo needing to be paid to lure someone here. In his first interview it was clear that as Manager he will have more control over the players arriving and leaving than we’ve seen in recent times.
Jones has seen two games with the 352. He appears to have been involved with the last two arrivals of the window who had Southampton connections. He’s had 4 days on the grass. He knows Istead and Louis Watson (Luton connection). He’d brought in Paul Hart (trusted assistant also with the Charlton history).
Now we have the Dobbo situation. Remember that the club said they wanted him to stay. Dobbo, it seems, chose not to. Scott made some signings to replace Dobbo (Coventry / Bakinson). As of today, Jones had taken a look at Bakinson and Coventry over two games and 4 days training. Not sure what he knows of Dobbo but he was club captain and had been player of the year, and runner up last year. Today it seems that Jones has exerted the muscle he has as Manager and the ear of the owners who employed him to point out that we are in real trouble this season and that it would make sense to be able to have the option to pick Dobbo in the remaining games.
Clearly there are still festering issues at the club behind the scenes, we don’t know to what extent this is due to Scott, due to decisions made about CBT and Dobbo’s new contracts or something else. I was surprised at the game yesterday how few players were busting a gut in front of the new gaffer, given our need to get something from the game. Kanu and Camara showed how it should be done when they came on.
Scott, for all his knowledge and experience, appears to have made the same mistake as Sandgaard thinking that anyone can run a football club. Anyone can get players in and then make them play a preferred formation.
As we are seeing playing out in real time, as football is a team game, you can if you like select 11 players and stick them out on the pitch but if they don’t know each other, don’t know the tactics, and have never played together, what get is what we have. No confidence, a fear of making a mistake, no commitment to the cause.
After yesterday Jones will have seen the scale of the challenge. I’d like to think that what’s happened today in relation to Dobbo is the first step to doing what’s needed to avoid relegation this season. The next step will be to get something from the game on Tuesday and then finding maybe 5 wins.
I would suggest in light of all of the above that Scott’s position is seriously undermined and would expect him to leave the club.
Whether Jones can get a tune out of the poor materials at his disposal sufficient to gain the points needed, time will tell.
Andy Scott for me has shown all the reasons why you don't give so much power to a technical director / wannabe manager to make the signings and let the actual manager get on with making the signings.
Back when it was Lee Bowyer the manager and Steve Gallen left in charge to make the signings the promotion season was incredible how they pretty much got every single signing right, I can't recall a single dud signed that season. Even Josh Parker played his part in helping us get promoted.
At this point with Andy Scott it's difficult to point to any recent signing who's been a roaring success. Early days for some of course and we've had Appleton in charge for most of January as well but if anybody ever needed any evidence that the good old fashioned method of giving the manager full control of transfers and let them sink or swim then you need look no further than the 18/19 promotion season and the last 2 or 3 transfer windows to see complete polar opposite effects.
So genuine question if Andy Scott is removed from having a say in transfers and from having a say in contract negotiations then what is the purpose of his technical director role?

I'd rather centre backs/defenders that can actually keep a clean sheet, and not be total pussies, than some centre backs that apparently are just really good at passing? Load of good that's done us so far.
It's absolutely ridiculous that we had a whole window to get a no nonsense centre back to increase our chances of getting some clean sheets, and we hired soft players as per.
Is it really that hard to find a player like Innis, that has a bit of discipline about him. I wasn't Jason Pearces biggest fan but we are crying out for a player like that, he'd absolutely walk into this team.

There was a spell, before injury where Innis was terrific for us. Offensively, he added to our threat from set pieces. Surprisingly for such a big man, he wasn't a great headerer of the ball, but he did provide a bit of chaos to increase our potency. I always think regarding centre halves, if you are playing two of them, at least one needs to be a leader and one needs to be a goal threat. It can be the same one of course. If you are playing three, at least one needs to be a leader and two need to be a goal threat.
