You have an owner and son wishing to dictate to seasoned professionals the style of play, a much lesser than normally expected input into player recruitment, this really is no different to the infamous email from RD and the diamond formation to Powell and how players were brought in. TS is a just a bit more friendly/cuddly and here (more!)
Ben Garner's first day at Sparrows lane with the players 16/6/22:
Aneke: I'm Chuks and I like to start on the bench. I score a goal every 100 minutes.
CBT: I'm Corey and I get very anxious before games but I'm two footed and can go past people with ease. I would prefer not to spend time and energy running back towards my own goal.
Stockley: I'm Jayden and please don't play me as a lone striker. Give me a good service and I will get 20+. I'm a gentle giant off the pitch but I will moan when the CB's hit aimless balls over my head.
Morgan: I'm Albie and I'm the best set piece player at the club. Unfortunately when the ball is moving and I see the posts I can't hit a cows arse with a banjo
Dobson: I'm George and JJ is my mate. You can be my new bestie if you make me captain. I'm POTY and I'm one player the fickle fans like.
Clare: I'm Sean and I was a midfielder, but JJ turned me into a RCB in a 3. Because of my pace I could play as an attacking RB or Wing back or play off the big striker up front. If the keeper gets injured I could go in goal. As long as I'm in the team I'm happy boss.
Purrington: I'm Ben and I'm average which makes me a top player at Cafc.
Fraser: I'm a proud Jock and when I get fit I will run the show.
Inniss: I'm Ryan and if I keep fit it will be a miracle. I'm fit for 13 games a season.
DJ: Just call me DJ, don't play me as a wing back.
Davison: You know who I'm. Here's another apple gaffer.
McGillivray: I'm Craig and I'm a Scottish keeper, I stay on my line; enough said.
JFC: I'm Jake and I'm unlucky with two serious injuries. I can pass a ball to someone with the same colour shirt on which is rare at Cafc.
What a joke....... sacked Jackson for this........ I really give up. All will have been done on a spreadsheet, just like RD he'll never learn, too pig/big headed.
Is this a question or a statement? Was he 8th choice or numbe 1 target?
Rob7Lee is a very knowledgeable man, so I'm surprised at the extreme negativity. Has TS upset you Rob?
I think people need to catch a grip personally. We are a lower third division side run by an eccentric owner. The only big names we would have attracted were the needy and the desperate. We’ve been through that before. We were never going to get Beale either. That was an utter red herring. And had we done so it would have been a massive risk. Brilliant coach but brilliant coaches have bombed before as Managers (Paul Clement anyone?). Thomas’s fiddling and nepotism will be well known through the game’s grapevine so we were never going to get a Warburton type signing. I suspect Ben whatsisname is third or fourth choice but I can see how his recent record would be attractive to TS. I’m underwhelmed but prepared to give the guy a chance. If he plays attractive football that will at least be a start. Let’s be honest, some of the names in the betting lists filled me with horror. At least we’ll be well prepared for league 2 if the unthinkable happens and we end up there! Some seriously ambitious recruitment needed now.

You forgot:
Matthews: I know I’m not meant to be here, but I’ve just turned up at the start of the last 3 seasons and got a contract, so I’m guessing that, despite me being utter shit, you will no doubt want to sign me. If you just give me my contract I’ll be on my way and see you at the ground an hour and a half before the first game of the season.
I personally think it is a good appointment. If he can replicate what he did last year with Swindon we are in for a good season. Lets be honest even if Beale, Warburton, Taylor etc have been interviewed there is no evidence to suggest they were interested in taking the job.
We are a bang average mid table team in League 1 so the chances of us attracting the likes of Beale etc were very slim anyway.
Welcome Ben, you have a lot more at your disposal than you had at this stage last season with Swindon so use it well and get us playing some exciting football
There also seems to be an assumption that we interviewed them and they turned us down. It is possible that Garner was the best candidate.
Seems to be a few new bods on this thread that I've never seen or heard of before telling us what a great appointment this Garner will be.
Hmmmm
Do you mean me? Is so, no idea if he'll be great or not, but I wish him and his team of backroom staff well. It's been a long time since we could say that. I think Adkins needed his!
What a joke....... sacked Jackson for this........ I really give up. All will have been done on a spreadsheet, just like RD he'll never learn, too pig/big headed.
Is this a question or a statement? Was he 8th choice or numbe 1 target?

We re-signed Davison because we knew he would miss a penalty and so Swindon wouldn't get promoted thereby meaning Garner would be open to coming to Charlton, and would clearly want to play the same player he used in the league below? Seems legit and not a stretch at all
In the long video Mr Garner talks of his early days starting out. One thing I found interesting was him saying as a young coach starting out he had no ‘network’. As in he had to stop playing early and start at an extremely humble level, whereas others who start out who had had playing careers often have a lot of contacts and associates in the game to draw on. He had to manage what was placed in front of him. Mr Garner accepted that he would tread a very lonely path in the beginning, almost like a ‘who the hell are you?’ scenario from others. Very much like the reaction of some of our fans now. He got his head down and worked and worked in conditions that were not favourable. He joined both Bristol Rovers and Swindon in unfavourable circumstances, and many argue those are the circumstances facing any new manager at Charlton. I draw from all that he is driven, eager to improve, and not afraid of challenges.

Question, he certainly wasn't number one choice as he wasn't the first manager to be spoken to. But whether TS spoke to 3/5/10 or 100 I don't know.
But the same mistakes are being made time and time again, players bought on stats, now managers.
But despite Swindon being number 1 in almost every stat last season, they weren't top in the one that matters - promotion.......So a manager fail to get one off the best squads in league two out of the division, so we'll give him a go at getting us out of league one with in a relative terms arguably a worse squad...... Swindon only just made the playoffs by a point.
How do you know that? He had 7 players in July and I believe half of the squad made their pro debuts last season. (Think I read that here?)
If he is so good why did nobody mention him on a wish list until last night?
He was mentioned couple of weeks ago when he was interviewed
Yes not by you though you know nothing twat. Last night you were spouting something along the lines of "the deal has been done, we all have the man we wanted and TS is flying over next week to announce it"
You were nowhere near to thinking it was BG and so much for TS coming over next week to announce it.
What a joke....... sacked Jackson for this........ I really give up. All will have been done on a spreadsheet, just like RD he'll never learn, too pig/big headed.

He's not upset me no, but people far more knowledgeable in the inner workings of this industry will tell you he's setting himself up to fail.
Like many successful business men/women he knows best, even in a field he had little knowledge of, much like RD he believes he (and his son) knows more than seasoned pro's who've been in and around the game for decades.
He might strike it lucky, much like RD did with Bowyer/Gallen etc - but ultimately luck has a finite lifespan and runs out very quickly!
Most seasons I like a little flutter on promotion, TBH the way things are going I'll probably hedge my bets and put some on relegation instead.
Theres a lot of stuff out there, you don't have to have inner knowledge in the club to work things out.
Luke Rooney, Ricky Lambert and Steve Parish have all praised Ben Garner either tonight or in the past as an excellent coach who can get his point across to players. A licence coach.
Ben Garner is another coach who started young after an injury put paid to a football playing career. He was born in Pembury, Kent. Not sure if it was personal issues but he had a break after a month in the job and Bristol Rovers didn't quite work out and it was Lambert who recommended Garner for that job.
The Swindon job he did very well as he had to bring so many players in as he only had a 7 a side team when he took over.
Good record with young players, and Zaha, Johnnie Williams, Nat Clyne are just a few of the young player he helped in their development at Palace.
Thomas Sandgaard may look on Twitter and change his mind; I wonder if that's why he told JR that interviewing is still going on ?
I believe he can do a good job but not if he is slagged off as soon as he loses his first game.
Pembury is my local hospital and I have been there a number of times over recent years and the place has been impeccable on each occasion if that helps to reassure anyone about Garner's appointment.
Listening to the last 20 minutes of that podcast you can absolutely see why Sandgaard will love Garner. He talks a lot about how and why data analysis should be used to compliment traditional scouting, not instead of, as well as player performance and talks specifically about the Brentford (and Brighton) model but stresses that any owner that wants to copy that has to be patient. Easy to forget Brentford are ten years into their model.
This isn’t a done deal, news leaked from Swindon as a hurry up. Compo deal agreed in principal.. but final decision hasn’t been made yet, as I understand
A very good article on Garner put up by @Scoham a couple of pages back. Recommended reading.
My take on it is that Garner is the man with all the tools to build a clubs infrastructure in the right way to ensure long term success and stability. I doubt though that Sandgaard will give him the necessary time should we fail to make the play offs next year.
Would have preferred Beale, Warburton or Taylor in that order but beggars can't be choosers. Welcome Ben.

Aren't most managers employed on stats? Then you go on to say why he shouldn't get the job, based on stats!
If Swindon did have the best, or one of the best, squad in the divison the guy is a genius. They have 7 players on the first day of preason and were on the verg of being wound up.
MK Dons had similar stats and didn't get promoted and there would have been a wankfest if we got their manager...........
Which one of historically our successful managers has been appointed on stats? Powell, Curbs, Lawrence, Seed?
Much like players stats are a small part, do they fit in, right temperament, are they 'Charlton' - all those questions a Cubs and a Powell would look at as well as stats.
Yer Swindon had such a poor squad by the end of August they were 4th
Seed had one season as Secretary Manager of Clapton Orient when it was supposed to be Arsenal’s nursery club. He’d been mentored by Herbert Chapman, whom he’d know for a few years. The FA then ruled nursery clubs weren’t allowed, so the money dried up. His main aim then was to get 11 men on the pitch each week.
At the end of the season Orient had made a profit of £5, so he he had to let the entire squad go, as he couldn’t afford to pay summer wages.
JS then sat next to Albert Glikstein at the banquet held by Arsenal to celebrate their title win (purely because the seating was arranged alphabetically).
The Charlton owner was bemoaning the club’s relegation, and asked if JS had been lucky in football. He virtually offered Seed the job there and then. JS had offered to do the job without a contract, while he proved himself.
In the modern era I think the only advantage in having ex Charlton players as manager is that the fans will give them more time. I suspect Garner may not have that luxury unfortunately, so let’s hope he can hit the ground running.
Interesting stats .. from league two last season Swindon were first in all the attacking areas goals , shots , procession , shots on target .
Yes Ronnie, those stats were interesting last night when they were posted multiple times on here, tell us something we don't already know................................................something that is true.
