And given that - according to the match thread - we are totally shit, all of our players are rubbish, the manager doesn't have a clue and the towels were being thrown in before the game even kicked off, that all surely means getting a point is a miracle, doesn't it?
Yeah you're talking about the result, I'm talking about the performance. Zero shots on target and Mac keeping us in it the other end.
So it's not a "good" point to me, it's just a point with no sparkle or glimpses of anything. No different in the performance from last week or the weeks before that.
I predicted a 2-0 Charlton win, so it ain't like I'm being overly negative or anything. It is what it is, shit football imo
Much better second half. We actually fought for every ball, and might even have nicked it, with two Lavelle headers from corners that shaved the woodwork, and the glaring miss from Stockley in the dying seconds. Great free kick from Lee, (whose set piece deliveries were much better today). Stockley probably could have side footed it rather than trying to smash it in. The move was supposed to be a header back across the box from Stockley to Lavelle at the far post, and it almost worked.
Otherwise it was alarming how uncomfortable we looked in possession. We seem to be easy to bully off the ball, although Sunderland looked tired in the last ten minutes from all the pressing. Good to see some of them getting booked.
Jaiyesimi had some good moments defensively. At least he doesn’t constantly back off like some full backs (or wing backs) do. Good to have Stockley back. He has presence at least. Burstow again looked poor. He took his shot a bit late, and snatched at it. That was the big opportunity he’s been waiting for (brilliantly set up by Stockley).
Very good to win a point, finally, and the second half at least gives us some hope of improvement. Had we repeated the first half performance I’d be reaching for my pitchfork.
I don’t have much love for the majority of this team and how it’s transpired this season. However, they did work harder and show a bit more fight today than they have in recent weeks.
An example was Elliott Lee. He had an okay game today, was getting stuck in and his deliveries were better.
I thought Sunderland had good approach play but lacked a cutting edge and would imagine we’ll see them again next season.
Pleased for Jackson more than anyone because I think he was starting to feel the strain a bit. He’s still learning, but as pointed out above, we stopped the rot and got a clean sheet. Something Curbs was a big proponent of whenever he had a few results go against him in a row.
It was important to stop the rot and in that context a good point. Jayesimi did a good defensive job, as did Gunter. The FA really need to do something about players complaining to the ref; Sunderland spent the whole match in his ear and it is bloody annoying. Credit to Elliot and Dobson for a couple of crunching tackles that deserved the yellow cards they got but showed that we weren’t going to be a pushover. Did the linesman flag Stockley offside at the end?
Thought he was flagging Lavelle offside. Stockley should have gone for goal although perhaps he was.
You don’t concede you can’t lose, is my current broken record mantra and that was a shed load better than the last 5 games. The lads tried, didn’t buckle and kept them out. After 5 straight defeats I am happy with the point against a good side. As I said before, if we accept we are no better then a mid/low mid table side (and the points don’t lie over a season) that was a great result. If you want Charlton knocking it about and pushing for promotion, you probably need to start work on the time machine in the garage.

Well that was a Curbs style stop-the-rot sort of performance. Not anything that will stay long in the memory but at least we never lost.
Special mention for MacGillivray today. Now I openly admit I'm not his biggest fan but he was my man of the match today with a string of good saves. Even our friend Gunter put in a good show today, clearing one superbly off the line.
Stockley's return made a huge difference at both ends. We need to pray he stays fit because there's no-one else can bring his power, strength and aerial ability to the team. (Well Aneke could but Lord knows when he will be fit to play again. Hopefully some time in the next 3 years).
Young Mason though needs a rest well away from the starting line-up. To be frank, he was blooming awful today and on that showing any loan next year surely can't be at any higher level than League 1. In fact, if I was a Chelsea coach in charge of his development, I'd be asking us to drop him before his confidence is shot to pieces.
With a better goal difference, we're now effectively 10 points clear of a relegation spot. Life can't get much better.

How do you explain those who only have negative comments after a result like that? Absolutely it's possible to say that we didn't play that well, lack of goal threat etc. But there are undoubtedly some positives to take against a team who are coming off a very good win and are challenging for playoffs.

Tedious crap from start to finish. Yes we scrapped and kept a cleansheet, but anyone who thinks we defended well is missing the point.
We were absolutely shocking when defending setplays. What was it? 4 free headers for Ros Stewart from what was essentially the same corner routine. On another day at least one of those goes in.
Keep banging on about it, but I don't understand the persistence with the 3-5-2. We look open at the back, get overpowered in midfield and create virtually nothing.
Think Pritchard going off injured has a baring on the result. In much the same way as Bannan did the week before, he was absolutely running the game. Sunderland definitely lost their edge when he went off.
Burstow needs to be taken out of the side imo. He looks totally lost at the moment and we risk destroying his confidence. 1.6m is increasingly looking like a bloody good deal.
Amazed Stockley got through 90 mins and fair play to him. Fraser on the other hand looks completely unfit, was miles off the pace. I hope we've not rushed him back.
Accrington, regardless of their form looks like another tough one, as they have the physical edge and will beat us up.
Positive today was Craig Mac, thought he had a good game and looked for more solid than recent weeks. The rest of them ran around a bit, when you consider that is a vast improvement on the last few games it underlines how shit this team is.

But that’s the problem, people are negative because keeping a promotion chasing side to 0-0 and taking a positive out of it, isn’t where we should be as a club in the third division, we should be challenging aswell. Yet we aren’t even close. So maybe the negativity is quite reasonable.

We absolutely can't get any results in any division we aren't in however well we play. Being satisfied with a draw against a team we could reasonably have expected to lose against seems reasonable.
All I can really deduce from today is we've absolutely had Chelsea's pants down regarding Burstow
Burstow has got something, that was clear enough a little while ago.
But he's clearly not ready to be starting games. It's asking too much of him to be saviour of a team on a long winless run. He's the lad that should be coming off the bench to play the last 15 mins.
I didn’t see the performance but from what I’m seeing on this thread it was pretty dismal and not much improvement on the previous dross. Unless there is a remarkable upturn in form which to me seems highly unlikely, then I think we should expect Jackson to be replaced. Players are mostly dreadful but there is also something wrong with the coaching. Defensively we’re pretty awful and have been for months. Same mistakes over and over again.
