If he goes and it is for a huge fee that is then used to build a squad to get us back into the championship and kick on there then it will be gutting but worth it and the reality of football nowdays.
If he goes and real investment isn't then pumped into the squad because the fee isn't all that or the appetite not there and we are still languishing down here for next couple of seasons then it really begs the question of what the point of it all and what Sandgaard's ambitions are.
We will see no doubt.
Hopefully if he does go tonight we still have enough firepower available up top to avoid the unthinkable this season.
This transfer, assuming it happens, will show our other academy prospects the value (in every sense) of first team football exposure. Should make getting them to sign their contacts that much easier.
Just seen this news. It explains TS' comments to Cawley. I wonder if selling Burstow is a way of offsetting our spending this window. It's such a shame that it's to the point where we only see our promising youngsters for two months.
I usually try to be pretty realistic about these things. We're a League One club, we're always going to sell. And j don't rate Burstow the way I did Gomez or Lookman or Konsa. But it's still just...deflating. And it leaves us one light up front.
Wasn't one of the positives that we would be able to hold onto prospects and demand a better fee?
This just calls back to the Roland days of shipping a youth player out the moment a bid comes in.
We've not even had a fee suggested and people are comparing Sandgaard to Roland!
The deadline day sale of a top prospect does seem to ring a bell from Roland yes.
We’ve been doing this for decades. Way before Roland. Parker and Reid come immediately to mind, albeit Reid wasn’t a “prospect”.
Thats not correct in Parker’s case. Chelsea moved in early. The entire club fought tooth and nail for almost the entire window to keep Parker, and at least finally got Putin, sorry, Abramovic to pay full whack.
We still sold him at the end of the transfer window.
After he refused point blank to play any more. And let's remember he was way older and more experienced than Burstow at the time, and had already thrown his toys out of the pram a season earlier when there was talk of a bid.
234 minutes of League One football. That's all we will have seen of Mason Burstow. What's the point of the academy system when this shit happens?
Well the Q&A with Thomas will make for interesting listening. I'll certainly have questions....
I take your point, but it's league one economics, as you're well aware. Selling a Burstow every couple of years will fund the academy and subsidise the running of an otherwise loss-making club, enabling modest investment in the squad. Twas ever thus at Charlton. As long as we are extracting full value and substantially reinvesting then I don't have a problem with it, frustrating as it is.

For every Mason Burstow who might get sold early, there are the likes of Albie Morgan, Chris Solly, Anfernee Dijksteel, Scott Wagstaff and Jordan Cousins who do go on to play a significant amount of games for the club.
We shouldn’t fall into the trap of just dismissing the importance of the academy off the back of a player leaving to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Its Burnley again isn't it.....
He’s going to Watford. Will be player-manager in 3 weeks when Hodgson gets the boot.

Let's wait to see: 1. if he actually leaves, 2. what the fee is, shall we?
The last time someone made that promise was Richard Murray when Duchatelet bought the club. If anyone past, present or future ever makes a promise that Charlton won't sell players, they are bullshitters.
Like 98% of the football pyramid, we are a selling club, and bar a Newcastle or Man City style takeover, will always be a selling club.
So Jackson tells Sky that Burstow is talking to a club but Sandgaard tells Jim White they haven't met our valuation.
How's he allowed to talk to a club if we haven't accepted a bid?
Because a deal may be close and the clubs can keep negotiating whilst Barstow agrees terms. If a deal is then agreed Barstow has already agreed his part.
