  • Bess was a bit rubbish in the second innings, but it's still a massive call to drop him. How long is it since Mooen bowled in a red ball match, never mind bowling well?

Just when Bowyer has started picking a more settled side, Chris Bowyerwood has now taken over the rotation mantle...

So looks like Broad in for Anderson and one of Stone/Woakes to replace Jof.

Moeen for Bess is the right call.
Is it ? When did Moeen last bowl or bat well in a test ?
  • Who they play out of Stone or Woakes will be interesting.

Wonder if Buttler not being there played a bit of a part in Moeen coming back in - yes Bess had a rotten second innings but might we also want to bat deeper?

This is going to be a tough game. I suspect the game will revolve, like the last one, on winning the toss and posting a big score.

fairly certain stones is there as a backup to archer, and woakes as backup for broad/anderson. if he plays that's 2 very similar bowlers in the attack.

In his antepenultimate Test, he bowled England to a big win (by 232 runs) in the West Indies (4-36 and 3-99). The last Test he played in India, he scored 146 and 40. He's taken more Test wickets in India than any other spinner still playing Test cricket for England. He's scored more Test runs in India than any other player still playing cricket for England, other than Ben Stokes and Joe Root.

That century in Chennai in 2016 though was the last one he's scored for England. Indeed he's only scored 2 50s in the whole of 2018 and 2019 when he was dropped/rested

Stone for me. Not sure how dangerous woakes will be (with the ball at least)

He can hardly be blamed for not scoring many runs or taking many wickets in games in which he hadn't played though.

    Really sharp start by Stone.

    Impressive 50 by Rohit with 8 x 4 + 1 x 6 in a fast 50 on the first morning.
  • Pujara and Kohli gone in quck succession. 86 for 3. Get in!

Leech gets Pujara and now Ali gets Kohli for a duck.

    100-3 in the 25th over.

Rohit Sharma with 75 not out and being so positive and looking assured.

Excellent first session with some great batting from Rohit Sharma; Leach and Stone the pick of the Bowlers and Ali with the ball of the session leaving Kohli in shock after being bowled for 0.

Rohit seems to be managing ok on it though.

Good first session for the lads. Always think you’ve got half a chance when you get Pujara and Kohli for less than 50 combined.

Two or three more wickets in the afternoon session would be lovely.
  • Only Kohli would have the audacity or arrogance to stand there, having played an expansive drive without scoring and left a gap between bat and pad the size of the Mersey Tunnel, and demand that the dismissal is checked!

    Winning the toss was vital.
Batting last on this pitch will be a challenge.
    100 partnership for India.
