We are one of only 4 clubs in this league who has paid a fee so far.  Peterborough the only one who spent anything significant, 1.2m for Clarke-Harris, and that was only because they sold Toney for 10m.  I’m grateful we’ve got a geeza willing to pay the bills and give Bowyer some sort of support.

So that site reckons we paid £198k for Alex Gilbey?

Probably cash deposit now and instalments. MK said they at the time they needed the money.

Conor Washington could also have cost a fee - he was still under contract at Hearts.

Think hearts let us have Washington for free, they needed to get him off the wage bill.
  • Wonder if the other Right Back is Ben Johnson from West Ham? - He got mentioned on the ITK thread as an option if we decided not to go for Matthews

He's only 20 as well, as per Bowyer's quotes on the first Cawley piece would be excluded from the cap
  • What's the punishment if you exceed the cap?
  • Must be good if we are arguing the toss and one of them is Matthews!

  • If we go for the U21 loan for Right-Back then the alternative to Matthews elsewhere in the squad must be a damned good option

Not necessarily. The other back maybe a loan so that we can spend elsewhere.
  • So we're only getting three senior players in. Brilliant. This season is gonna be a wash.

Depends who the three U21s are... Levitt has done alright so far, if its another three like him and Gallagher I'll be happy

The risk is they could also be like Matt Smith

Thing is, if we're getting a young loan player, then his club expect him to get plenty of game time.
Not just back up in the squad. Or they wont lend us players in future.

Yeah but if one of the U21s is a Right-Back then they're 100% going to get game time
  • I imagine though that the current three players that would take us to the limit would be: Matthews | that unnamed Centre-Back | Schwartz

He'd better be good if we're not signing Matthews then.

The challenge is not just signing the player with the best ability - it's also about character and how he will compliment the rest of the team.

With Matthews, he's already proven to be exactly what we need. At a price.
No wonder Bowyer and Gallen are scratching their heads.

This is the ‘Charlton’ way. What we have come to expect, always a hurdle at the last that we need to work around or fall over on. If we can get 6, the seniors havIng decent quality and experience and the U21s are 20-21 and Prem academy quality, we will be just fine.

Another Gallagher type midfielder that can make something out of nothing would be perfect, as we have good passers in that midfield and JW has some nice tricks in his locker, but that driving killer run/shot out of the blue that hits the top left hand corner is lacking atm.

Behave. We at least have a club and we are financially sound. Count our blessings.

Three senior players along the spine would be significant for our future.

Phillips, Doughty, Mathews, Cullen, New striker, New CH. Bows has difficult decisions to make.
Its a shame that Phillips is already on a Contract with us

I presume if we sell him (to free up say his £5k p/w contract) that doesnt actually free up the £5k for someone else because he's exempt from the Salary Cap

That's right, it'd only free up his wage contribution to the salary cap. But it'd still make room for another body.

Indeed. If Phillips does move then that frees up whatever his wages are taking up under the cap.
    Permits yet another senior signing.

Edit: Just seen my post crossed with @Sage

    He makes the same point.

We lost 10 (12?) senior players last season? We don't have a single right back at the moment. One LB. 3 CBs. Not a single wide player. And poor strikers. Three senior players is putting a plaster on a broken back.

I was commenting on the season not the club!

Getting out of this league is going to be bloody tough going.

People are forgetting that we will be able to bring in another permanent and senior player once Phillips moves on. As things stand, we are looking at 3 permanent and 3 loans, but that will be 4 permanent and 3 loans should Phillips seal a move away.

Okay it might mean we are a bit short in one or two areas, but I am sure they’ll bring in the best 6 or 7 players they can get.
We've no restriction on numbers, it's the total salary that's the issue

As Phillips has a pre-dating contract, he only counts as £2.5k, so wouldn't free that much in wages anyway

Famewo and Doughty can play there - Same with the Right-Back slot, we'd only have Matthews or the loan but Oshilaja and Lapslie can play out there too

We cant bulk up our squad unless we want to go with quantity not quality so have to be clever and get that versatile signing we associated with Curbs so often

I think the contribution to the cap by existing players might be nearer £1.7k a week having tried to find a definitive number somewhere
