We would not have been able to acquire Chuks or Lockyer if we had stayed in league 1. That's a fact. Lockyer picked us because he wants to play for a championship side and knows he can be a main stay in this team to be on Ryan Giggs radar for Wales. Aneke chose us because he's too good for league 1 and 2 and needs to challenge himself. There is no doubt in my mind of that. So to say they are league 1 targets is wide of the mark. Aneke has been a talent for years and Lockyer was one of the best centre backs in league1 last year. Both would be in a promotion chasing side in league1 so who's to say they can't make the step up.
I am genuinely very surprised and happy we have got two players as promising as these offering poor wages. Shows how important promotion was and more than anything keeping Bowyer.
Totally agree but how does anybody know what were paying them that could all be rubbish for all we know !!
It's been mentioned by 2 ITK posters on here and Bowyer has gone on record saying we have a low budget, as has Gallen and journos have said we are paying low.
That's why I am so happy we could get these two with our wage structure, shows great ambition by the two players where by the sounds of things they would have been paid more by their old clubs
How about we get Josh Vela, Bolton, as a midfielder? A free, out of contract after tomorrow. Only 25 years old. 1.81 tall. Have heard some solid things. Has experience in our new division.

Anyone ever seen napa and tommy diesen in the same room!
Out of contract at Birmingham, 31 and an experienced and proven league one defender.
No idea what money he is on but Jacko might have his phone number.
Good call. He's a warrior and would be a really good acquisition but I can't see him accepting a contract at what we're apparently offering - plus he'll doubtless remember the absurd attempt by Duchatelet/Katrien/Peeters/Little Tommy to shift him off to some Romanian team we've never heard of before or since.
Such an intelligent move on their part to release Morro to Birmingham for nothing when we had Ben Haim on a one year contract, The Beast - who had a recent history of performing for half a season - and Joe Gomez, who was always likely to leave at the end of the season, particularly in the light of Katrien's paltry £3.5million release clause. Forward planning has never been the regime's strongest suit, although moving Morro on was, of course, entirely consistent with Duchatelet's philosophy of a skeletal squad and maximising the exposure of Academy products in the shop window. As the great Karel Fraeye - bafflingly unemployed after leaving Lommel United bottom of the table in October 2016 - once memorably informed us: " You only need 11 players and 7 on the bench".
Plus, our dearth of central defenders meant we also got to sign and re-sign the great Roger Johnson and to see him and the crocked Rhys Williams perform in tandem.
I went to the Hull city match when Johnson and Williams played as the two CB. After the 80th minute when Hull Scored their 6th and final goal, just before they declared ! From the top of my Soapbox, yelled out 7-6, we're going to win 7-6. That was in my drinking days and mistakingly thought I was at Wimbledon and we would win on a tie break.
4-0 at half-time
Hull turned in as much as we were shocking. They could easily have reached 10.
Cracking day out though.
I remember that Saturday when you met up with me and your mate from Goxhill in that nice Hull pub rammed with very pleasant Ull fans .. this was the same week we had conceded 5 at Huddersfield the previous Tuesday ( as @OhEddie Youds says) .. Hull were a very formidable side that season .. Harry Maguire, Robert Snodgrass and all and Huddersfield were starting to develop their eventual promotion winning side .. we on the other hand nosedived into relegation .. BUT WE ARE BACK !!!!!!!
Yep, remember it well.
Hull were Barcelona in amber that day.
Did you get a round in that day mate?!
I was stand alone on the lemonades .. I do not believe in supporting alcoholics in their addiction to the booze .. AND you still owe me one from the Burnley Miners Club !!
Just had shivers down my spine remembering cross country runs when at Roan...
And me - PE lessons at St Joseph's over the heath through the park and the foot tunnel (stairs only) to the Isle of dogs and back - the run back up to the observatory was a killer!

I'm afraid that I saw that one as well. One of the worst - if not the worst - defensive performance I've ever seen from a Charlton team. A good overnight trip though
Could be worse mate. I went to both that 6-0 defeat at Hull that weekend and the 5-0 defeat at Huddersfield a few days earlier on the Tues. Questioned my life at the end of that week!
Please tell me you didn’t go to Colchester the Saturday before. A test of anyone’s mental fortitude
Guilty as a puppy 🐶 sitting next to a pile of poo.
Surprised Lapado went to Miller's if he was on our radar.
Cos Roland is an idiot Bowyer didn't rate him anyway They offered more money He owns a house boat on the Don He won't play for a club staring with a letter from the 1st half of the alphabet His agent is Paul Warne's sister He hates Chris Solly
It could be a million diffrent reasons, if he even was on our radar.

Will also add Bristol City are a consistent championship side now and will be going for a play off push and have signed Sammie Szmodics from Colchester on a free, 2 league jump for him as well. These are the good signings, getting squads best players for a pittance
City have also signed a excellent keeper in Daniel Bentley from Brentford
Lockyer and Aneke both look like signings planned for League 1, both untested at Championship level. The quality of the eventual loanees will be crucial.
Don't see the problem here.
Firstly if they were proven at Championship level, they wouldn't be coming to us because a dozen other sides would pay more.
Secondly, it seems that Bowyer is doing what Curbs used to do. Sign players who have been decent in the league below who are fairly young and are hungry to prove themselves at a higher level.
He did that with Kinsella and Jensen. Any others ?
Kinsella actually managed to jump two divisions and then effortlessly transitioned to the Premier League - what a player.
As well as Jensen, The Curbs also took Fish and Todd from Bolton, both of whom were excellent signings. I’m sure there were others
True although Todd joined us from the same division. Curbs targeted players that viewed Charlton as their pinnacle ( at least until the Rommedahl: Murphy season) but i’m not convinced he took many gambles from lower leagues. I have huge faith in bowyer but as I said earlier, we are bargain shopping

Vela is decent and most Trotters think he will be off anyway, wouldn't complain if we got him.
The FM type buys though if we are to believe Roland would pay a fee for a young player who we could sell on would be for me;
Cheap option - Dru Yearwood, great potential, was involved a fair bit for Southend at the end of last season, interest at the moment from Rotherham and Boro. Quick, strong and only 19.
Middle option - Ben Whiteman from Doncaster. He was overshadowed a bit by Herbie Kane against us I thought but still, Donny pretty much battered us at the Valley and he was a big part of that midfield. Also scored a pen against us and gave it the bigun and I love a s**thouse. 23 box to box type.
Expensive option - Tom Bayliss from Coventry, has a host of clubs after him but the main club linked, Aston Villa don't seem to be as interested anymore as he didn't quite perform as well in League1 as he did league 2 and with their prem money they are probably after more proven players. Versatile creative mid. Again probably out of our price range but just speculating.
I think Yearwood is possible, Southend knocked back 400k apparently from Boro, 750k mark with clauses might do it, who knows
If we are to believe Oztumer is basically done and we missed out on Lameiras then that is the 3-4 bowyer said we would have.
The silver lining with Lameiras is that missing out on him may have stimulated our re-engagement with Jonny Williams. It's unlikely we would have ever brought in Lamerias, Oztumer & Williams.
I'd imagine so, unless we've taken a couple of trialists out there and we sign a couple more free agents who then join up with the squad. I doubt Gallen will be out in Spain
Greenwich Park looking down on where I used to play footie as a teenager.
@Covered End Same here - '78 to around '82, Sunday afternoon and then round the Ashburnham Arms for a few pints. You?
Exactly same years. I used to work on the boating lake weekends & holidays when at school. Then chat to the ladies and play football. Best days of my life, young and care free.
I remember that cross country too (class of 87) gruelling hill at the end, only a mile but it seemed much further at that age - or am I misremembering. Remember Turner and Guerilla too of course.
