  • Forgot to add - seeing squirrel face on the pitch actually left me with a bit of sick in my mouth.

    Disgusting woman.
  • frustrating afternoon. Decent first half. Still have no idea why the free kick was awarded to them which led to the goal. Lino was certainly flagging for a push on DaSilva.
After that there was only 1 likely result.
Out thought by Jackett. Pompey set up as hard to beat and well organised. Two men on Holmes most of the time and given a few kicks if there was any danger.
We certainly need to find a way of causing a threat; it's just not happening and hasn't really for a while. Maggenis well off form but no realistic alternative. Desperately need a striker in january.

Doomed with the regime Doomed with Karl Robinson. Wonder if those two KR arsewipes mouthing off the other week - You know who you are ;) still want to kiss Robinson's arse?

The two boxes behind us in the East Stand were full of Pompey. One of which where the lads were fine, but the other had a bunch of loudmouth wideboy types who got their share of abuse back.

Hats off to the Pompy fans throwing glass bottles and coins across the platform when there were only about 12 Charlton fans left on the Kent bound platform. Glass bottle smashed about a foot away from a disabled man and coins only just missed some kids.

    Classy.

Also well done to the old bill for just letting it carry on whilst concentrating 15 police officers on the 3 Charlton fans between 16-50 on the Kent bound platform. Definitely was important to film them rather than those throwing stuff.

    Fucking shambles.

Scum mate. Every Pompey fan I encountered today seemed to be a prick
Yep agree with this. As the match went on, you could tell their fucking backwater of a Jeremy Kyle cast of 3000 weren’t like a proper away following you get from like a Sheff Utd or a Newcastle etc

They’re like a shit version of milllllll

Walking up Floyd road as we joined them you could tell they were looking for some poor man’s version of football factory

It’s actually a shithole of a place as well. My best mate went to uni there and it’s very pikey
So, you can call it a 'shithole' because your mate went to Uni there?

I lived and worked there for 6 years, and i can disagree with you with that load of bollox.
Surrounding areas are nice. But from the numerous visits I had down there I thought it was a dump
  • Piss poor game and it was freezing. Highlight of the game was the penalty save.

We never looked like scoring against a resolute Pompey defence. Most of our players were mediocre.
  • The box load of Pompey were proper bell ends

How can the club let this happen the steward didn’t seem to give a toss
  • We were good in the opening part of the first half. Portsmouth rode that out and made a few changes. They're not a great side: route 1, League One stuff - but they were organized and adaptable. I thought Lowe was excellent for them and O'Keefe too.

Didn't think any of our players had a particularly terrible game (or are bad players per se, or worse players than the Portsmouth XI) - our problem is the way the team is set up by Robinson. Lots of lateral passing and running across the pitch. Holding the ball and passing it around for 2-3-4 minutes rather than trying to break the other side open. Marshall loathe to try and get past whoever was marking him and Holmes running into trouble about 20-25% of the time. (But still our most exciting player).

For a striker with 25+ international caps Magennis didn't win many balls in the air and when he did his heading "on" was not on target.

Clarke was pretty anonymous and frankly I'd have started Best, who nearly got an equalizer in the 89th minute, alongside Magennis.

It occurs that the talk about the sale of the club - with Robinson cheerfully pitching in that he expects to leave if/when this happens - might have put the players on auto. The sooner that gets resolved, one way or the other, the sooner we can move on.

But Robinson needs to change the way the team in set up. We need to be more incisive and play in a way suitable for this level. At present our passing and position play still comes across as that of a side attempting to skillfully play its way into the Championship which may not always be wise.

What happened with Meire on the pitch... was she booed?

Apparently the whole ground shouted meire ...... cunt & this went on for 10 minutes, it was awful for her but she just had to put up with it. I'm sure that's correct isn't it pinnochio ?
You forgot to add the chant of: Women have no business in Football... awful, awful for poor Katie!!
It was worse than the racist abuse that Black players used to have to deal with. It was shocking. She's so brave.
Dont worry everyone... Her story has an happy ending

At the end of all the abuse some bloke who looked like tibbles ran on to the pitch and give her a reassuring hug!!

    Was lovely to see

  • PWR. Should've taken our first half chances. Pompey not really in it for the first 30 minutes. Aribo looked good first half but then someone in an Aribo mask came out after half-time. Magennis runs around and makes many headers and knock downs to .... er, no-one. Didn't realise til I saw it on BBC that it was an own goal! Holmes not been on it for the last 2-3 games. Needs a rest. Naby good and bad in one. KAG deserves a start. The ref saw things I didn't and didn't see things I did. Very inconsistent. We deserved a point but no more.
  • Best for Magennis next game, not that i foresee huge improvement. I'd give KAG a start instead of Clarke and perhaps being in Reeves for Marshall (anyone else think that his starting position when we are in attack is 10 yards too deep).

Straw clutching though- you don't go up without a forward, as I have been saying since September

Seemed that way didn't it, made the decision to let them use the Landsdown mews gate not look so clever. Walking down to the match we encountered a few who thought it was good to sing offensive songs about our ground and initimidate my 8 year old - I suggested to them they could go back to their own ground. I left early with the little guy to avoid similar on the way back assuming they wouldn't be kept back.

Last time I suggest we give these 'lovely' fans who clearly didn't appreciate the gesture or the occasion, any extra tickets.

Everywhere has its 'dumpy' areas, Portsmouth is no different in that respect - but i can tell you it has far more decent respectable places than Charlton environs.
  • We lost, so what, I’ve had a fucking good day out and that’s what counts. Just one thing KR, let’s have lots of shots...

Agree. Miserable looking bunch of types - drinking out of bottles as they swaggered down Floyd Road etc. Bad end of the English supporter spectrum and only a little step away from the hooliganism of the 70's and 80's.

What a time to be a Charlton fan

  • We have to learn to take the game to our opponents - one up front and relying on counter attacks really will not work at home especially when you go behind. We need to be able to sustain some pressure other than from short periods. Yet again we conceded to a set piece, and apart from the occasional Holmes free kick in front of goal we offer nothing from our own set pieces. Corners, especially Holmes's, are pretty diabolical - time to look at using others - my guess is that DaSilva might be quite good.
  • How the fuck was there only 3 minutes added? Ok with another 2 or 3 we probably wouldn't have scored by the way things were going but even still.

Every big game in the last 6 years that the fans turn out for, we lose - pathetic performance especially as the fans were outstanding today, hang your heads in shame you gutless cowards

Today up until near the end they didn’t seem to care
  • Think there are a few overreactions on here about the performance.

Yes the result was not what we needed yes we really wanted something to cheer about today. However, I don't think the performance was that bad. The boys all worked hard. Things didn't always come off for them but we dominated that game for large periods. Yes we allowed them in on a few occasions and yes they had periods in control but on the whole we dealt with them well.

The lino game a fk to us but the ref overruled and gave it to them despite being further away and with a blocked view.

The difference was their sub at half time. He played in the pockets between players and scared us whenever he made a run.

Magennis worked hard and didn't stop running. Unfortunately their defenders had decided after the goal to go down every time he won a header and the ref bought it. Holmes kept trying even though nothing came off for him.

With the caveat of we have players missing and players like Clarke on the way back from injury. I thought the performance was decent. There was fight and commitment from all.
But things just didn't fall for us leading to frustrations boiling over a few times.

Fans were excellent. Best atmosphere since one of the last large scale protest games. Nice to have a bit of a crowd walking back to the station. Ground felt a lot more full than it looks in photos I've seen.

Been like this for a while though.

It's one thing working hard but when KR insists on playing the exact same way even though it hasn't worked for the previous few weeks it's not gona work.
Yeah. Fair enough. I havent been since the Donny game. Did feel a bit predictable and one dimensional. Final ball was poor and didn't get some of the decisions from Robbo. Subs needed more time to have an impact. Why not go two up top a little earlier.
Yeah I've no idea. Thought Best should've come on when KAG did.

Need to have a different tactic ready to go. Must be so easy for other managers to plan how to play against us.
KR did change it but all too late.

Big Josh is being hung out to dry - the solitary role he’s being asked to play is killing him.

So, maybe the idea is to play three up front when in possession by using two quick wingers but to get the best out of the wingers we need the midfield or wing backs (not so much Solly but DaSilva is an excellent wing back) to play a part by interacting with the wingers and, in particular, by using the channels and making third man runs behind their full backs.

As many have said, all too predictable and plan B implemented much too late.

We need to use two strikers, imho, one with height such as Big Josh or Best and one with lightning pace, the likes of Danny Haynes pace and style, who can get behind their defence from knock ons from the big man and run the channels for fun.

Cast your minds back to Yann and Danny Haynes - an awesome and highly effective pairing.

Agree with much of what you say but, to be fair to Ricky, he delivered two beautiful corners, one straight after the other, in the first half when he was getting abuse from their fans and things thrown at him up their end (so to speak!).
  • First time back at The Valley in seven years... plenty of effort and possession but lacked a cutting edge today. Credit to the fans for noisy support for the whole match, I thought we deserved something from the game but the 25 year celebrations jinxed it - this is charlton after all
  • PWR

Well Brian Cole urging 'plenty of shots' certainly didn't have the impact of Curbs 25 years ago!

With apologies to @oohaahmortimer 20 minutes of good bright play from Charlton, even though I don't recall the Portsmouth goalkeeper being worked too much, 55 minutes Portsmouth dominance as they seized control of midfield and15 minutes of Charlton coming back into it although that generated only one (good) save from the Portsmouth goalkeeper to Leon Best's downward header towards the corner.

A disappointing outcome as we showed ourselves unable to deal with an industrious Portsmouth side with an outstanding number 18, Lowe, who gave our defence problems every time he ran at it.

Our players tried but too many were simply below their best or even average. I believe today was the worst I've seen Josh Magennis play to pick out what I consider to be the most blatant example.

I opened with Curbs and I shall close by recalling his mantra don't get too up when we win or down when we lose.

Hard to do today for me. I felt that we received a loud, clear message that we are probably good enough to be top 8 or so in this division but no better than that.
  • Let down on the big occasion yet again. The life of a Charlton fan.
    Top two? No chance
    Play-offs? Most unlikely
    Mid-table obscurity? yup!
