Probably deserved a point but we are too predictable and inflexible with our rigid 4-2-3-1.
Four games ago we were on course for 92 points and now only 81 (and falling fast).
I don’t think we did deserve anything from it.
We lacked creativity, Portsmouth did us tactically I felt as you pointed out our 4-2-3-1 is too predictable
Worrying signs over the last few games if we’re honest
Great, I'm really looking forward to Ewood Park next week now
My thoughts exactly Red.
@ozaddick Injuries, lack of depth in the squad and some key players playing below par has done for us mate. The success at Bradford seems light years away now.
I've got my ticket because I was worried about the xmas post not getting it here on time if I left it too late ordering it. Are you going to hang on until next week before making a decision?
I’ve booked the rattler up already red. I’ll be there mate, look forward to catching up again. I’ll grab a ticket when I land back in England tomorrow. Is the club still selling em?
If you wanted any extra evidence that the game meant f**k all to the players, they were on a train to Newcastle tonight on the piss up as if nothing had happened!
Hats off to the Pompy fans throwing glass bottles and coins across the platform when there were only about 12 Charlton fans left on the Kent bound platform. Glass bottle smashed about a foot away from a disabled man and coins only just missed some kids.
Classy.
Also well done to the old bill for just letting it carry on whilst concentrating 15 police officers on the 3 Charlton fans between 16-50 on the Kent bound platform. Definitely was important to film them rather than those throwing stuff.
Fucking shambles.
Scum mate. Every Pompey fan I encountered today seemed to be a prick
Yep agree with this. As the match went on, you could tell their fucking backwater of a Jeremy Kyle cast of 3000 weren’t like a proper away following you get from like a Sheff Utd or a Newcastle etc
They’re like a shit version of milllllll
Walking up Floyd road as we joined them you could tell they were looking for some poor man’s version of football factory
It’s actually a shithole of a place as well. My best mate went to uni there and it’s very pikey
So, you can call it a 'shithole' because your mate went to Uni there?
I lived and worked there for 6 years, and i can disagree with you with that load of bollox.
Surrounding areas are nice. But from the numerous visits I had down there I thought it was a dump
Everywhere has its 'dumpy' areas, Portsmouth is no different in that respect - but i can tell you it has far more decent respectable places than Charlton environs.
On the island? In Fratton? Must have all been since I was at Poly then.
From what I saw today, not much has changed with Portsmouth
In response to quite a lot of comments, I thought Marshall did okay today particularly in the second half and put in some good crosses on his right and left and consistently got the better of the left back (how did the linesman not give that foul?). Pissed off when Robinson took him off but then that is becoming one of his stock substitutions so not surprised.
Seems a bit like he only runs down the line and can't really get in on goal like Fosu does? Forgive me if that's wrong as I've only seen him a couple of times.
From what I've seen, that's Marshall's job ...... to be direct down the line and getting the crosses in.
But there's usually only Magennis in the box surrounded by 3 defenders - so the crosses come to nothing. The tactic needs another forward player in the box.
To be fair, Marshall does cut inside from time to time and we've scored a couple of goals in recent games from his shots being charged down, before being converted by team mates.
If you wanted any extra evidence that the game meant f**k all to the players, they were on a train to Newcastle tonight on the piss up as if nothing had happened!
I dunno, do you expect them all to go home and cry about the result?
Would probably rather they were all together, good for bonding and all that.
I agree it makes them look like they don't care but you can still care and go for a night out with your mates imo.
Probably best if they didn't plaster themselves getting pissed on a train all over social media though.

Suppose you might be right yeah. Just frustrating when Josh isn't winning any headers.

Yes, still on the website but Wednesday is the last day for posting out although you might want to call down to the Superstore to get one opening hours ;- Monday: 9.30am-5pm Tuesday: 9.30am-5pm Wednesday: 9.30am-5pm Thursday: 9.30am-5pm

Suppose you might be right yeah. Just frustrating when Josh isn't winning any headers.
But a big reason why he isn't winning those headers is that he's double or even triple marked. Just one other player working in and around Josh would draw defenders away from Josh, provide an additional target for crosses and pick up knock downs/loose balls.
Presently, there's often too big a gap between Magennis and our attacking midfielders - and Magennis gets isolated.

Was posted on Lewis Page’s instagram/snapchat I think ... but was definitely tonight -Leon Best has earlier posted a video of him downing a Stella on the train too

Obviously I’m not saying they can’t have a life away from football etc ... but you’d think after playing pretty poorly in a game that has been hoped about for weeks (let alone meaning so much to so many!) they wouldn’t be ‘rewarded’ tonight and as you say plaster it all on social media!

Just be grateful they didn’t go out for a meal with their other halves and take them to the Oxo tower , imagine the crying from Charlton fans if they’d done anything that outrageous
Watched it on iFollow. Played well in patches in the first half, but I thought we looked lethargic throughout the second. I thought Magennis had a stinker and Holmes seems to lose the ball a lot. Marshall ran at them but mainly into dead ends. Our overall play was very predictable.
No real stand outs, but I thought we lost shape and cohesion when Clarke went off, and Konsa looked very good for such a young man. Cant believe how good Sarr is looking though, probably one of the main pluses this season to see such a turn around in form and confidence.
At the end of the day it wasnt worth staying up until 4am to watch but having been at the Valley 25 years ago, I thought it was the least I could do.....just a shame we dont do occasions at Charlton....
A pretty sparse crowd given the significance of the date, and we all know who's fault that is.....time to go Roland, you have really hung on far too long....you know it makes sense to leave now...so just fuck off.
Best part of the day for me was outside the ground before kick off, handing out Valley Party/CARD rosettes to everyone, lots of smiling faces in anticipation of a very special occasion, seeing lots of "faces" currently staying away like @Rothko and feeling the buzz reminiscent of days gone by.
But the following 90+ minutes was hardly worthy of the celebration of a unique & emotional event just 25 years ago.
From the start, this match smacked of a one goal victory from one of the teams out there , and so it unfolded , as it did a quarter of a century ago, but alas, not via a Charlton boot ( although I now believe Big Josh may have been cited as the scorer) In fact, apart from the late effort from "our Georgie", we could have played until next Saturday, and still not hit the back of the net.
It pains me to state what I feel is the obvious but we gave the faithful a pretty toothless performance to cheer today....although, as others have stated, we haven't truly been at the races for several weeks. Our Rickeee is clearly going through a mediocre patch and without him firing on all cylinders, we struggle, albeit a fit Pearce and Fosu might give us some renewed energy & creativity. But, it's just not working at this critical time in the season, with the Xmas/NY matches inevitably taking their toll. It may still be early days in the Charlton careers of both Marshall & Reeves but IMHO, neither player excites me from what I've witnessed thus far. We are a team exuding weariness, lack of initiative and sadly, a degree of skill overall. Promotion by whatever means this season, is a pipe dream in my book , I'm afraid.
So, where do we go from here, I hear you ask ( or maybe it's those little voices in my old 'ead) ?
Well, for me, it's Ewood Park, mad fool that I am, ever hopeful but if I'm honest, expecting little apart from the company of other nutjobs cut from the same cloth.
The outlay of some substantial money in the January window might help, via an owner who is able to paint a rosy picture of the club's future under his/her stewardship & hence entice one or two players previously out of our price range. Those with contracts up for renewal in the summer could be attracted by a new, positive vision at our club if the price is right.
And the promise of a pre season down under next summer might just do the trick......
Word for Aribo. He was played in a role he is really not used to or suited for. He the big boots of Kashi to fill.
He battled hard and is technically bet good. I'd go as far as to say he is technically as good as any player we have if not better.
He made a lot of key interceptions and chased everything. Creative going forward.
I'd prefer him playing with Kashi than instead of but I'm glad we have players like him who haven't managed much game time this season.
I loved the way he stole the ball away from them, on more than one occasion. But generally I thought he looked out of his depth, although you could partly put it down to rustiness.
We are so pedestrian, predictable and laboured. As soon as they started closing down Holmes and Marshall in two's we didn't have a clue. There is no incisiveness and slickness in our passing and we don't seem to be able to break without players taking multiple touches, choosing wrong options or running down blind alleys. I find myself willing Holmes to score a worldy to nick us a win. There is no talisman - no Hales or Mendonca to excite the crowd and frighten the opposition. You didn't need to be Jacket to tell Pompey to ride out the first half hour whilst we fed off the atmosphere and the occasion and then look at us and see, is that all you've got we can win this. We got a big lift for the penalty save and responded really well for a period, without really troubling the keeper. Overall this season we have been better organised and better to watch under Robinson, but there is a real danger of the season unravelling at the moment and, directly or indirectly I believe it is because we are rotten to the core under this owner.
Oh, I'd just like to say I think Jay DaSilva is a class act and stood out like a beacon today. It occurred to me that had Lewis Page been fit in August we would probably be playing him with an academy John as back-up. God help us!
Until Leon Best's header in the last minute, in the entire second half we forced not a single save from the keeper.
Not once.
At home at The Valley, in a celebratory game, if you wish. Nothing to excite the Covered End. Holmes is our best player – you would expect carefully weighted passes in the channel to the box. Yet his are over-hit, straight out of play.
We have no finesse, no mutual understanding between one player and another. Magennis nods down in midfield – to a partner who is never there.
Portsmouth came out fighting in the second half, and swept us aside. We all know that our midfield is vacuous, our defence fragile, attack non-existent.
We are technically unable to pass from one to another. I have watched Charlton since 1965, and this is horrifying: our passes along the half-way line fly to Row Z. We rush forward on a break – yet the simplest pass is misplaced – our runner has to check to receive, stretching back to control the ball. It is lost.
It's gone! In that vital split-second our opponents seize possession, and surge forward. We defend like girls: plopping clearances to a midfield of nothing, a no-man's land. Clarke, Forster-Kaskey, Aribo are terrified of the ball itself. Reeves? Not for me, thanks.
Later, we have an attacking throw-in, 0-1 down, ten minutes to go, and no-one moves. Nothing, again. Our players stand around, 30 yards away, stunned as statues. Utterly stricken.
We are mentally and physically weak. That's why we play badly, got relegated and are hopeless again. These drips shuffle, sideways and backwards. And fail in game upon game. We have played without guts and conviction since August, against Northampton, long ago.
Killer was celebrated today, and Clive Mendonca, King Arthur, and Paddy Powell. And Jim Melrose – whom I saw score a hat-trick against Man City at Sell-Out Park. Paul Walsh, Paul Williams. These are are our beautiful, tough, aggressive, intelligent and heroic strikers.
Meanwhile, as usual, in the 45 minutes against the Covered End yesterday we did not have a single accurate shot on goal.
Our players have failed our heroes. What on earth are they doing?
Comments
Not Curbs, nor the goon with the pointy nose.
Not Parky, not even Chris Powell.
Even the string of forgotten Roland kneejerk appointments didn't have one.
No surprise then, that Karl Robinson doesn't have one either.
PS: Don't forget, Dowie, Fraeye and dear old Uncle Les didn't even have a Plan A.
From what I saw today, not much has changed with Portsmouth
