  • If we get Chris Wilder in as Head Coach it will be a step in the right direction. I think his most pressing job is getting in a good Chief Scout who knows Div 1/2. Also sorting out a decent assistant, I hope Simon Clark is the man.
  • If true this is a positive development - full control of transfers and appointing a manager with the right attributes quickly would certainly be a departure from what has happened before!

    Wilder on his way
Chris Wilder is on his way to London prior to his appointment as Charlton coach. It's not Eurostar, it's London Midland this time. Apparently he has received assurances about having a say in player recruitment: Wilder

nothing against Wyn but he just regurgitates news from elsewhere so wouldn't read anything into the above.
  • @LargeAddick Could you contact your source for an update?

IF IF Wilder joins it will show that Duchatelet has at last learnt something. All he needs to do now is to replace the rubbish CEO and that will prove that he's learnt a lot

Wilder has had success in the lower divisions (two promotions) and must know his stuff. IF IF He comes it may well encourage some of the players who were thinking of leaving to stay and give it a go next season. I hope so
  • I find it hard to believe that Chris Wilder would leave Northampton Town after the lengths he went to to make sure that the club got the owner they deserved last autumn. Sixfields will have a spanking new stand complete and ready for the new season, the place is buzzing and he is really appreciated by everyone connected with the club. I don't think any manager outside the network would consider going to Charlton unless they were absolutely desperate, and Chris Wilder certainly isn't that.

  • Of course Wilder might be happy with the speculation to get a better deal with Northampton or even generate a firm offer from elsewhere.

Worked for Curbs often enough and won't blame him at all.

    WIOTOS
  • If it's to happen, I hope it happens ASAP, and he can get to work on trying to retain, Kashi, Diarra, Pope and a few others.
  • You have to doubt the man's judgement. Why would he be such a fool?
  • I remain cynical on it going ahead, but if it does it needs to go hand in hand with a new CEO. Get both in and my mind may open a little (very little).

Even in this scenario people should hold off on an ST.

I know this is a turn of phrase, but to me it is a hollow promise.
I accept that he can have a say and Duchatelet can say 'we can't afford it', which in normal circumstances would be fair enough.
However I envisage it more like Wilder having a say, and then Duchatelet saying 'we can't afford it, however as we're talking a right sided midfielder, I just happen to have, hey presto, this one from St Carl Ujpest Alcocon FC you can have. In a month I will contact you and give you a hard time because you're not playing him'.

Just as managers can be pressured to drop players like Solly or Henderson or Jacko, we know they are also pressured to play them.

A verbal assurance in a quiet room about having a say is not good enough.

Credible action, credible explanations, credible outcomes is the only thing we can accept, we have all had enough of assurances.

And it has to start about 10 seconds after Wilder is appointed...if that happens.
  • Well this is interesting. If Wilder does come in then I'm convinced that he has assurances way above any previous RD appointment. Can we conclude from this that there has been a realisation that the previous model didn't work and lessons learned ? Or will the assurances be worthless. If that's the case Wilder will walk and I doubt remain silent on why. Should that happen then the chances of RD ever getting a decent coach again will be gone along with his plan.

Even if he has assurances, it doesn't change the fact the Duchatelet will stick to his stingy budget that isn't good enough to attract Championship quality players, which is what we need.

    Roland Out.
  • Sounds like he's up for a challenge after steering Northampton from the edge of oblivion - think he's better off staying there.

  • What they say to him and what they do once he's in charge will be the difference.

Anyone seen anything on any Northampton fans forums today
  • Didn

So it's gone from he has been told he will have full control over transfers. to assurances about having a say in player recruitment in 2 hours. having a say ? This means absolutely nothing. More fool him if having been warned off he still comes in.

The guy is not an idiot and if he does come then he's up for the challenge. He's had enough challenges in the past to understand what crap goes on. Seems happy to speak his mind....
  • He must be bonkers....the job is a poison challice

Who ever it is......please, please, please Roland let the him manage - you know the sort of thing 99% of owners do when they employ a manager. If you need a hint, let him choose what players he does and doesn't want, let him pick the team and give him longer than a few months. In other words back him or sell to somebody who will.
  • Everyone has a price, and perhaps Duchatelet has put together a decent financial package. Of course, words are hollow and, as we've seen only too often, Duchatelet, Meire and Murray cannot be trusted. Yet, if Wilder did become manager, what has he to lose? He would inherit a team on an alarming decline. If he could halt the decline, his reputation would be enhanced. If unable to arrest the decline, he could walk away citing unsolvable issues and broken promises. No-one would doubt that to be true given the wide media exposure of the protests since last November, and the number of coaches employed over the previous 30 months. And there will always be a club willing to offer him another opportunity.
Personally, I don't believe he will take the job on. But despite all the issues surrounding CAFC, there are a large number of ex-managers around who would willingly give it a go - even if the cards are stacked against them. Better to be in work, than not.
