  • Sky Sports News don't normally report the wrong figures tho and its them saying £3.5 M

Charlton wont say a price, no-one associated will say a figure and you have to wonder why

just seen Olly Groome tweet that £3.5M is wrong, how does he know, and why wont he tell us the real price then.

Unfortunately with nothing coming from the club I am starting to believe it could be as little as £3.5M

Fucking hell. Is there anything between your ears paulie?

Sorry but with nothing coming from the club, as fans what are we supposed to believe
if it really was undisclosed Sky Sports would say that, they always do

but they are not, they are saying it is £3.5M, sky sports would not say that without some proof otherwise they could be in trouble from the club, they are not stupid and will have researched it before putting a price
What do you mean if it were undisclosed? Neither club has disclosed it, so it is undisclosed.
  • Loan back is a possibility but not considered yet. One of the strange things about the move is Brendan Rodgers has not seen loads of Joe playing so needs to get up to speed on his talent and ability.
  • Think he could do better than Liverpool by the way, recently they've signed a lot of youngsters, loaned them out then they've gone nowhere - the likes of Coates, Ilori, Borini, Aspas etc.

Think he'd have been better off at Arsenal or United if they were options.

Fair point but what about the emergence of Sterling and Ibe. I think if he is good enough he will get his chance even if loaned out for a year or two.
True, those two have done well.

Just think Arsenal for example have done better by youngsters, the likes of Ramsay, Chambers, Oxlade-Chamberlain etc, and United have given Smalling and Jones a lot of chances even if they haven't progressed as they should have.

Ah - but Paulie is right, have the club disclosed that it's undisclosed, and if they have disclosed that then would it still be undisclosed?

People refusing to believe every media outlet because they suggest that we have a bad deal, but more than happy to agree with someone at the club who will want to keep fans happy by saying we got a good deal. Hypocrisy is incredible.

Good luck to Joe though, has kept quiet throughout and seems to be one of the classiest players we have ever produced. Therefore I would be disappointed if it is only 3.5m and we'd be lucky to get one more top striker or midfielder for that but oh well.
  • Whether it is £3m, £6m or £10m surely the expectation is that we will spend every penny of that on transfers.

So, in the hope it was say £6m, I would expect us to now buy three £2m players which will make far more of an impact than an unproven youngster - hopefully a la Lepoint, Thuram and Nego.

  • The club and Joe have handled it as well as could be possibly hoped for really - best wishes to young Joe, even though I'm gutted we won't see more of him at the Valley.

Now let's see who we bring in over the next few weeks. We may look back in 20 years time when we're selling a player who hasn't even been born yet and say "ah, but remember when we sold Joe Gomez and that helped fund the squad that took us back to the Premier League in 2016?"
  • What ever figure was agreed, it wouldn't please everyone who visit's this site, most of these deals are conducted like this these days. We just have to accept what has happened as we have with most deals that have happened in or time as supporters. As with my members name Marvin Hinton ( My first Charlton Idol), was sold to Chelsea in 1963 for 25 K. At that age I was mortified but have seen many come and go since then but my 1st love (apart from the wife and family ) is Charlton Athletic and that will never change.

It's not just Olly Groome denying the 3.5m figure.
  • I'll say again and join the chorus: .. I hope that most of the fee is spent on decent BRITISH Championship level players .. there are a lot of them about and most are available
  • Good Luck Joe. Lovely words of thanks from him.

Maybe I'm being naive, but Olly Groome is a proper fan and not so much a member of the club establishment, so I'm inclined to believe him.
If Katrien had said it, then yes, I would have been more sceptical.

Thing is only a handful of people actually know the figure .. and they aint spilling the beans .. me ? .. I'm assuming £3.5 million, the reported price for the escape clause to come into operation
  • Good luck Joe ...you will be a star and I wish you all the best

  • Good luck to Joe, shame it's Liverpool but hope he does well and fulfils his potential.

Good luck to him. The club and Joe have handled this brilliantly. I hope he fulfills his potential.

    Olly Groome on Twitter:

@ShoreRobert I can confirm Robert, that reports of a release clause were total nonsense.

Then why not have a bidding war ?

All the top teams were interested, that's what you would do.
Joe can then tweet, my dream has come true to play for Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City,Barcelona and "Leicester".
    Perm any 1 from 20.

I keep being told we're selling from a position of strength.(Not skint anymore)
If the figure doesn't reach 10 million in the next couple of years someone needs to explain why from the club.
Don't care if we have to pay an extra 10k because clubs know how much we got for Joe.

  • Paulie, people lie, the media lie, people make things up and the media make things up.

Maybe Sky are lying or maybe Olly is lying but I know which one I choose to believe

    New mantra...

    In Olly we trust.

3.5m clause was leaked by Liverpool to keep their fans happy.

The bin dippers are currently peed off with their club for spending 6 or 7 or 8 million on youngsters season after season.

And although that policy doesn't seem to have changed, they've put the 3.5m clause out there to make Joe sound like less of a gamble than previous signings.

That is my interpretation of the situation.
  • If it is 3.5m, that represents the money Liverpool will earn for 31 minutes of their match against, say, Stoke or Leicester next season. Bizarre world is football
  • Paulie, people lie, the media lie, people make things up and the media make things up.

Maybe Sky are lying or maybe Olly is lying but I know which one I choose to believe

    New mantra...

I'd trust Olly with my life.

    Not my wallet though : - )
  • People happy to say Sky and BBC are lying because Olly Groome works for the club and he should know

sorry but how do we know the club have not told Olly Groome to put it out there that the it was more than £3.5M just to keep fans happy.

Believe who you want, but I am more inclined to agree with people who don't care about trying to keep Charlton fans happy and try to stick to the facts about football

But mate, the 3.5m figure was put out there in the first place to keep Liverpool fans happy.
