Oh can you prove Poyet's words are not all lies to save face? Nah thought not. His word vs Roland's.

One of those has committed to the club and is spending cold hard cash on it whilst the other bails.

So because I can't prove Poyet's words aren't lies, they are? Let the boy speak when he speaks, rather than slating him to kingdom come because we THINK he's lying, without technically saying anything to us. FFS.

Innocent until proven guilty and all that..
Not sure he's said anything yet - has he? I understnd this is based on a twitter post from someone who was allegedly at a party with him.

The club confirmed that Diego would not be renewing his contract as he saw his future elsewhere. A few days earlier Bobby Peeters at a press conference stated that Poyet had been offered a new contract and that he was trying to contact him daily as Charlton were very keen to secure his services (or words like that effect - can't be arsed to find the quote).

All this talk about being forced to do this or that, sacked if he didn't blah blah blah is total bollox.

I agree with you that we should wait to hear Poyets own words - this rumour is meaningless conjecture and not particularly credible based on what I said above.

  • Was willing to wish Poyet good luck and could understand his decision, but if he's gonna start telling lies to save his image then he can f**k right off.

Before we start being rude to him, after he's played a HUGE part in keeping us up in the Championship, let's wait to see what he has to say. You're jumping the gun as per usual with your over protective approach. If we can prove what he is saying is lies, then yes slate him, but before he has said anything let alone a lie... let's zip it.
    my over protective approach??

lets have it right, i was one of the only people sticking up for Poyet when he decided to leave. Plus the fact I've included the word 'If' in my post.

    'lets zip it' indeed.

We are a bigger club than liege end of I think! If we was in Belgium league we would be winning the title

Indeed we are. Their average gate last season was lower than any of ours in the Premiership years (27,000 cap.)
These two posts are jokes, right? I'm missing the smiley

I stand by the above statistic!
You seem to be confusing capacity and gate.

But that is hardly a measure of "bigness" is it? Unless you accept that Sheffield Wednesday are massively bigger than us

They averaged 24,000 or so last year when going for Championship/Champions League qualification. We averaged above that in all of our Premiership seasons, when the Valley had a cap of 27,000 (obviously for a few seasons pre-North Upper the cap was 20,000.)

Agreed that you can't just use attendance as a barometer for measuring the size of a club. There are many other factors that also prove we're bigger :)
I can't think of one. The fact that they come from a country which most British people don't think about much, proves absolutely nothing. Which is a pity, as it appears from the World Cup that we might have something to learn from them when it comes to football.

By the way - and this is a genuine question - where did you get their attendance stats from? I have difficulty getting hold of them. I do know that all their playoff games sold out in advance in home areas. As with us in the FAPL the ability to sell out depends largely on the visiting support. We only reached 27k when the away end sold out.

I agree. From the club we KNOW they wanted to keep Poyet. We KNOW that they were trying to keep in touch without pressurising him unduly. We KNOW that he was offered a contract. What we DON'T know is why exactly he turned it down, or why his saying so now would somehow jeapordise his move - why can he not say now if it really was a shunt to Liege? His new club surely would not care, just be glad they got a good prospect on the cheap. The fact he has only started claiming shenanigans after fans were not happy with HIS decision not the clubs suggests its a face-saving exercise to me.
  • If there's one thing Diego Poyet needs it' s a good agent who tells him when to keep his trap shut. Whether he did or he didn't mention it at a party he's causing a bit of a stir on Twitter and should just ignore the questions people are firing at him with regards to his reasons why he left the club.
  • Had a good half season, got hyped, thought he could earn a big payday at 18 so is going for it. Dont think it's more complex and cant really say I blame him to be honest.

It's a shame for us but I think I'm equally happy with yesterday's signing than I am disappointed that he's gone.
  • Of all of the nonsensical threads of imagined intentions and conversations, this one has to take the biscuit.

We don't know! We don't know whether RD is indeed sensible, we don't know whether Gus had any role to play, we don't know what terms Diego was offered or why he is moving on or even where he is moving to.

It's crazy to get angry with someone over an imagined slight or to worry about future similar scenarios when we don't even know what this one is!

He's gone, it's a shame, maybe for the right reasons maybe for the wrong but unless there's something to go on then four pages of analysis on invented events is just crazy!

Why don't we all just go and have a beer in the sun and forget all about it?!

Well said and I'll join you for that pint

Here you go, Prague - http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/attn/avebel.htm

Can't vouch for the quality of the source, but as long as the data corroborates the point I wanted to make then who cares?!

If we were pushing for a Champions League place, we'd sell 27,000 HOME. Given that we were going to increase the home areas to that figure with the approved East Stand extension, messrs Murray, Varney, et al would evidently agree!

    Complete bollocks.

He wanted to move and he did, any suggestion that he was going to get farmed out to Liege is purely PR from his agent.

Sorry about earlier, I was misled...

  • I missed the tweets, but just looked at his Twitter account and he said he will post the truth why he left Charlton when he signs for a new club....to a fan...whatever that will be.

I very much doubt that he was ONLY offered a standard Leige contract and i think the apparent "story" has a grey area.

My GUESS would be, offered crap wages at Charlton and a much improved contract if he went Leige.

Would not be happy if any of our players went leige!
  • @Kap10‌ sorry I'm away on business so just seen your question.

My cousin played in the academy and is still close with Diego and Joe Pigott. That's where I got my info from.

I was actually told this a few weeks ago, but it didn't make any sense to post anything as it was a non story. He's an incredible asset and of course Roland explored all options to keep hold of him. Charlton was always the preference club to have him at.

I suspect (and this is speculation) that the relationship soured after his decision and we've made it clear we'll be seeking maximum compensation.

It's highly likely that any fee would be agreed by tribunal as things stand and I can't help but feel this story has been planted as a way of bringing any fee down.
  • IF it did turn out to be true, I'll be asking is there any chance he could ask Simon Church to do the same thing.
  • If it's true then poet is a prick for not taking the opportunity to gain valuable champs league football experience

If he goes Chelsea he is a long way from that sort of experience and exposure

He also is turning down the chance to challenge himself in a new environment

Funny the last internet based story for why he chose to chase the Stirling or euro was because we were offering peanuts now it's because we were human trafficking him to Belgium

His stories are as shit as his old hair

Young lad has Premier League Clubs sniffing around him.

As a free agent he will get an enormous signing on fee.

As a Premier League squad player he will get an enormous weekly salary.

As a Premier League squad player he will get enormous publicity and possibly be given fantastic opportunities to improve his profile.

Unfortunately, he will get £10k a week, get kicked in the air regularly by jealous midfielders seeing out their career and have to visit Bromley Addicks once a year to be 'guest speaker', should he stay at Charlton.

    What would you do?

I'd examine Scott Parker's career and reflect that the years at Chelsea were a complete waste. I'd ask myself whether UCL football at Standard in August isn't better than hanging around the bookies in Esher. I'd ask myself if staying on for another year to help Charlton get a decent fee isn't a classy thing to do when i still have my entire career ahead of me.

  • Hah.

No answer to the 'Bromley Addicks' question eh Prague?

    That's the clincher for me.

Too right! Parker went for money and playing midfield in the Champions league due to injury and poor form at Stamford Bridge... The dream lasted 6 months and then many years of purgatory with Mourinho bringing lads in then Newcastle etc before a late spectacular at Spurs.
But he done alright even if he might be showing up at the Valley soon in a Fulham shirt!
Poyet's career? No idea, not my concern....maybe he comes back on loan sometime to get some game time and help our cause...more than welcome.
Much more interested in our new set up but unfortunately can't find the time to go to Belgium this weekend so Welling away to see what's what.

Its obvious he's moving for money
He doesn't see Charlton as a charity he wants to support , he's looking after no.1
His decision, whether it's right or wrong for his future
Who knows whether these players are shit who make the big move and do nothing in their careers eg Bostock but should he have stayed on less money and turned down the fortunes on offer when the future has no guarantees , only the present
    Make hay why the sunshines

In an ideal world he would support Charlton and like to play for us for nothing forever until the club decide to sell him for £100m to barca and our charitable owner would pour it all back in to Charlton .... But we don't live in an ideal world

Whatever path he chooses I'm sure he will think was the right one for him at the time

And we can whinge about him not signing off £2m to us if he becomes brilliant or say he fucked his career up leaving SE7 if he doesn't become brilliant , we can't lose on the moaning stakes !!!
  • He's going to west ham?!?!?? I thought he was going to Barcelona and was going to be the best player in Europe?!?

Some people have real issues overhyping players when they are here, and then over hating them when they are gone. Emotions seem to be either full on love, or full on hate, no in between.

Well if he goes barca or chelsea he thinks he's better than he is and a bench warmer
If he goes west ham he's nt that good and may play a bit

    Load of old chuff

    Move on
  • If he goes to Wet Spam, he can f'in do one.

Does the same not go for the club?

It's a bit hypocritical to just assume Poyet has told the truth before either party has officially confirmed or challenged anything!
