Not sure if this has been raised before, but the reason he did not re-sign with Charlton was that he was told that if he did, he would be shipped out to Standard Liege and "forced" to play there for a year. Given that option, he decided to leave. We have a good replacement in Buyens, so it should not impact our season too much...

I've heard this but I don't believe it for a second. We obviously offered him several contracts and I'm sure the chance to play for Liege was mooted in the hope we could get him signed up but what idiot would try to 'force' an out of contract player to do anything he didn't want to do. This is just crude spin used to justify a controversial move.

    That's quality. Diego <3

Interesting........ Not quite sure how you would 'force' a player to play.... and I am sure no manager would want to use a player that did not want to play for the club as our own manager at present has claimed!
I could well imagine that the idea or opportunity of playing at Liege was used as an opportunity, but in the circumstances his father has far better connections than CAFC I would have thought?
He was a free agent, and as much as it upset's us not getting a nice pay off, I hope CAFC learn from this issue. Quite what they 'can do' is somewhat at issue, as I for one questioned Keith Peacock about this when Shelvey left?. It seemed pretty obvious to all concerned the player was a talent, but was told that there only 1 offer on the table, and we all suspect that CAFC at the time were cash strapped. Keith also mentioned that it would be unfair to the player as well. I have to say that I disagreed, but it was not my future , or my money so I shut up!......
  • This is sad. Why do people care about a joke from years ago?

il be interested to see how he does at west ham but its no longer something to be bothered about.

We have players here that want to play for charlton and have faith the club is moving in the right direction.

  • Diego isn't stupid, had a decent education at Eltham College and will have been guided by his Dad as to what not to do when at a professional football Club.

It's not as if he's ended up in a big pile of his own poo is it?

Like Jenks and Shelvey he'll be a mid table premiership player... Can't see him ever doing a Parker or a Jenkinson and playing being signed and not used for any of the big 4.

    Not talking playing style btw!
  • Andy Carroll is exactly the kind of bloke who'd find that hilarious. Not exactly known for taking himself seriously

Yeah, yeah, I'm sure that was the case. Nonsense.

Can people please stop bringing up tweets when he was younger, and playing for us, like u have never done something u regretted, he has left now can we stop trying to hang him out to dry,
the fact these old tweets keep getting brought up by charlton fans just makes us seem bitter

Pauline Do you think you could stop telling people what to do?
Not telling anyone what to do just think its stupid bringing up a tweet a 16 year old made 2 year ago

  • He was Charltonised at the time so he had to spout infantile crap it's our vocation in life

    #moveon
  • Think that's quality. Doubt the West Ham players care, probably having a laugh about it and their fans can't use the internet.

Hardly a career ender, people making out like Downing is gonna gut him.

    Too right
  • I'm not trying to tell people what it think because I think the tweets are quite funny if a bit sad that someone's trawled through his history.

Jonjo always struck me as a more like able bloke , where Diego always seemed a bit up on himself.

I didn't post it when he was with us but speaking to someone who knew him, thought he was a bit of a twat.

I guess he's got a lot of growing up to do, I hope he fulfills his potential, and bear him no ill will, life's too short for all that.

In all honesty...if as an 18 year old like Diego, I had his wage and marginal fame that comes with the social status likely to attract the woman that throw emselves at you... I think I would be a bit of a twat :)
  • You don't need to trawl through his history. All you need to do is go on his page and search some keywords like West Ham or the names of West Ham players. If he was a bit more clever he would have done it himself and deleted them all after the first time.

  • This isn't a sour grapes dig at him cos he's gone, but I wonder if he'd have won POTY if people wern't voting to try to somehow convince him he was "loved" at the club, rather than how much he contributed over the season?

He didn't get my vote on the basis of I don't think he played enough games..............

Quality player and had a great season but always feel a players 2nd half of the season will be fresher in people's minds than the first and if Jordan swapped his halves around then he would have won it, instead his start slightly got forgotten and remembered more for when he was playing wide right. I would have voted Morro anyway.
  • Would be a disaster if Charlton fans were to post a retweet Poyet had written in the past and hurt his feelings after all he did for us.

Can everyone stop saying the guy that trawled through his twitter history is sad. Most people nowadays spend their lives on twitter, Faceboo, so he's just as sad as everyone else. Anyway I think whoever did it is funny.
  • FFS some people need to get out more.

Try going for supper, having a pint with mates, going clubbing, even going to the library would be more interesting than re-tweeting a 16 year old's tweets to try and make him look bad and pretend you aren't bitter.

Give the bloke a break. I guarantee any single one of you would snap my right arm off if I offered you the chance to play Premiership football when you are/were 19.
  • What I don't understand if you are a prospective professional footballer why you would slag off any other footballer.

Even at 16, I wouldn't have been slagging off people in my industry. Likewise I don't slag off my ex companies or staff.

Even his dad should have taught him that.
