I was expecting us to lose and when you line up our chances with theirs, we had the better ones. Ball seems to be going just wide rather than in at the moment and it is important that doesn't continue as I suspect we are quite fragile. The difference of approach was more evident in the first half where I thought the game was more open than normal - we had more chances than we usually do in this period and so did our opponents. Robbins changed things at half time and JR had to counter by putting an extra player in Midfield. He called that right. I think he should have left Sordell on the pitch though as he was looking a proper striker for a change - long may that continue.

Whilst we had the more clear cut chances, and should have won the game because of this - I though the result was fair overall and Huddersfield are a decent side. I think we can take quite a few positives form yesterday and whilst I would rather have Chrissy managing us - I felt the new chap looked like he knew what he was doing. Millwall on Saturday is such a biggy and if we win that one- yesterday's point will have been a massive one!
  • Thought Poyet and Jacko struggled in CM

Pretty much agree with your summary apart from the bit about Poyet. Edged it as MOM for me. Opinions an all that...................:-)
my fault. I meant as a partnership they struggled. Poyet had a decent game but Jacko lacks the pace now and as a consequence they struggled against Clayton & Co.

Muttley thanks for giving us some perspective. I am a little baffled by some of the comments on here about how poor the performance was, Riga's substitutions were crap etc. It was his first game in charge off the back of looking at one training session. He would've had to take a lot of advice from Dyer and Matthews about who the players are, how they play etc. Whilst I won't read too much into this one game on either a positive or negative note, I was pleased with:

Riga's engagement on the touchline throughout was good to see. He didn't shy away from giving out the orders, whilst Freye took notes.

Sordell played well. Would've been great if he got his goal, but he looked far more interested than he usually does. His first touch was good, and he may feels he can fight for his place now Powell's gone.

We pushed forward. For me, we created more chances in the first 20 minutes than we sometimes have in whole games.

Don't get me wrong, there were a number of things that didn't work, such as Reza on the right wing. He didn't provide much cover and made Wilson work hard all night, and he can't use his right foot.

We weren't use to that tempo, and couldn't sustain it throughout, hence some loose balls. Finally, he didn't need to sub Sordell.

I agree with Muttley, in that he looks like he knows what he's doing. Obviously Saturday is massive, people within the club have hopefully got across to him what the game means. But I actually think having a manager and new players who don't know the history of our struggles against Millwall might help. CP always talked the Millwall games up, saying they were massive the team would be ready. We weren't and lost 2 out of 3 and played badly.

Adam Clayton is very good player. Covers every blade, always looking to get on the ball and make things happen. The Huddersfield team looked like it was built round him and his strengths.

Now HE... Ben Hamer has a beard!!
  • Posted without reading rest of post. Was disgusted with some in Covered End Upper J Block booing Pritchard before he got on the pitch. He wears the Charlton shirt. What style to boo individual players. Surely Charlton fans are better than this. I await the numb-nut abuse and justification for such behaviour.
  • Don't understand why Jacko took all the corners in the first half, should have switched it about a bit.

Apologies if someone's already posted this. Highlights from last night and 'tunnelcam'.

  • Those on here who have been calling for SCP's head are crapping themselves and realise it may [probably will ] get worse. Those of us who supported the great man are in a different though equally tricky situation as we know it will get worse but deep down hope it doesnt.Either way if it gets worse the SCP out brigade have a double wammy. We go down and they know they got it wrong. If it gets better I suppose we are all happy.

I believe that we would go down with CP anyway.
  • Confidence is the key here. We just need a bit of luck. Sounds like we started pretty brightly, but the early goal we so desperately needed didn't materialize and as the game wore on so the confidence wore away and the energy levels dropped a bit and it sounded like we just couldn't quite maintain the early tempo. Had we scored during that dominant opening 25 mins, we may well have really pushed on from there.

Compare that with the Sheff Weds game in the cup. Buoyed by the late winner vs QPR we started well there and got a goal during our the dominant phase of the game and even though Wednesday equalized the heads didn't drop and we found the reserves of energy and character to score again and survive the late onslaught, despite playing twice in 3 days and having some bloody tired legs on the pitch.

Goals change games, and we just don't score enough of them right now. The encouraging thing seemed to be that we at least attacked the game. If we keep doing that we will start to score more goals. Will we score enough goals? I don't know, but at least we seemed to be going for it to the best of our abilities last night - let's hope we start brightly again on Saturday but get rewarded with a goal or two and give ourselves something to cling onto.

It's a tough balancing act for Riga and co on Saturday though - it's a derby, we all want to win, it's also a relegation six pointer, but with our games in hand a point is potentially not so bad a result for us - it'd be a better result for us than Millwall. Defeat however could be a heavy blow for us so just how much do we 'go for it'? I suspect Powelly would have set us up on the more conservative side, the way we setup under Riga could tell us a lot about his approach and if we really can expect to see 'more entertaining' football under him.
  • Stonewall .Presumably if you wanted him gone the point would have been to improve things not just to get relegated with someone else in charge.

  • Think some are being a bit harsh on Reza. He is lightweight (like most of our team) and he ain't a right winger (like most of our team) but I think he looked bright and dangerous and had some good moments.

  • Reza loves a dive which is a shame

Something had to change imo. Sad but true. For whatever reasons it wasn't working and they changed it. He is club legend and he done well overall for us but its a results business and Roland has no sentiment.

There doesn't have to be point scoring from either camp.

In fact we are all in the same camp, we all want the club to succeed.
  • I like those CAST badges, how do we get our hands on those?
  • The available players clearly ain't about to start banging in loads of goals but getting a draw in each of the games in hand will see us overhaul the 3 above so long as we match their results for the rest of the season. This makes Saturday's game at the toolbox an absolutely essential must not lose at any cost. If that means playing 5 defenders and 5 midfielders in two lines in the most cynical and determined parking of the bus ever seen then so be it - avoiding relegation is imperative - entertainment be buggered for the next 2 months - I have grave doubts that JR will be so pragmatic, let's hope Holloway's hod carriers turn out to be even worse than Huddersfield and QPR
  • I thought we were excellent first 25 mins and should have had at least one goal.
The feeling was that we would probably regret not cashing in and so it proved.
I thought Udders were strong in the middle of the park and 2nd half they seemed to exert more control as we faded.
I was royally pissed with Sordell for stuffing up those two 2nd half chances. However, having seen the 2nd one, I have to admit he controlled Poyet's brilliant pass beautifully and the shot was decent. The save from Smithies was more luck than judgement IMO, but that's the way it's going for us right now.
Poyet is excellent and really enjoy watching AA too. Dervite did very well and Jacko got stuck in.
By his own high standards, Wiggins was off the pace and not I'm convinced by Reza, particularly on the right.
Overall a missed opportunity, but a decent display.
  • look like to me the same old story cant put the ball in the net does not matter who is in charge come on Richard Murray do something

  • I thought we shaded it to be honest but have to say Adam Clayton is a very good player. I also thought we ran out of steam a bit towards the end which is worrying with the amount of fixtures we have coming thick and fast. The Millwall game is really a must win that would change the complexion of the season for us, lose and I fear the worst.

Lastly I agree it is totally unacceptable to boo a player coming on but I have to say that for me bringing Pritchard on is like going down to 10 men I just cannot understand how he gets anywhere near the team. But he doesn't deserve to be disrespected like that.

Millwall 35 games 31 points minus 30 GD
Yeovil 34 games 29 points minus 19 GD
Barnsley 34 games 29 points minus 28 GD
Charlton 31 games 28 points minus 17 GD

    We can do this

    Millwall 35 games 31 points minus 30 GD APPG 0.885 AETT 40.7
    Yeovil 34 games 29 points minus 19 GD APPG 0.852 AETT 39.2
    Barnsley 34 games 29 points minus 28 GD APPG 0.852 AETT 39.2
    Charlton 31 games 28 points minus 17 GD APPG 0.903 AETT 41.5

    APPG average points per game
    AETT average extrapolated to total

Oh yes I love a spread sheet :-)

To be honest I thought a better team would have wiped the floor with us last night, the gap between our centre backs was criminal. Early to judge I know but what does this man know about our football? None the less a win on Saturday would put us out of the dreaded three (assuming Barnsley and Yeovil don't win) with games in hand ... life would look a lot brighter if that happens.

Edit: Don't forget Blackpool are dropping like a stone

I find it strange that you should feel deep down that it doesn't. Almost sounds like you would almost be happy for us to go down so you can make a nebulous point to those who may have question marks against CP.

Both of these are accurate and to the point, although I think he stayed on his feet a bit more on Wednesday.
